Six word review: Gothic. Surprising. Suspenseful. Spooky. Twisty. Gripping.
Loved it!
Very strange!
I absolutely adore Jamaica Inn – it is my favourite book of all time. It has also inspired my own novels in so many ways.
Intense! When Mary Yellan’s mother passes, she honors her late mother’s wish to move in with her Aunt Patience and Uncle Joss at Jamaica Inn. On her travel there, she is warned that respectable people do not associate with Jamaica. Unsure of what this means, she forges ahead to her destination. I first read this novel in junior high school, and I loved it–so Gothic and dark. Though I have read it several times, the cover on this Kindle edition is just beautiful!
Du Maurier ‘s Jamaica Inn is the original dark, suspenseful mystery with a dash of romance. You will love the twisted and sometimes bent trails of this classic story.
Great book. I didn’t enjoy it as much as I did Rebecca, but it was still very good. Very atmospheric. A great gothic.
The imagery in this book was captivating and made me feel like I was there. I felt what the characters felt, especially the fear.
Classic!
Some days are just Daphne du Maurier days. There’s noting quite like her brooding atmospheric novels, and the way she tips her hand to the reader so that you have a chance to glimpse the tragic mistakes the characters are about to blunder into, all because they trust the person they should not trust. Great escape stuff!
Rich gothic tension on the Cornish coast of England, my favorite Daphne Du Maurier novel.
I simply loved this book as I do many of Daphne Du Maurier’s books This is the story of smugglers along the Cornwall coast. A young woman comes to stay with her aunt and uncle and is warned about these activities.
I must say that I’ve enjoyed the movie as well.
Must Read!
