Author and licensed educational counselor, Samantha Shannon, brings Jake back for this second tale about a dog who is different from other dogs and critters. After making some new friends at home in his first book when others began to see him as the sweet and kind dog he is despite his growly voice, now Jake’s family takes him somewhere new.
We’ve all been nervous at one time or another about a new experience, and Jake’s tale not only shows kids that they aren’t alone in having those butterflies in their tummy it also gives them gentle ideas on how to handle those worries and fears while having a blast with their favorite growly character and his furry friend.
Includes Conversation Starters and Activities for Children, Families, Schools, and Counselors to help with confidence, stress, and preparing for new experiences.
This story is packed with loads of fun, while also educating our little ones that they can overcome fears and cope with stress in a variety of ways. Along with Jake’s story, this picture book also includes talking points about why trying new things is important, what stress is and how it makes us feel, ways to cope with nerves and worries, a child-friendly discussion prompt about mindfulness, and a breathing activity.
These activities are perfect for families, schools, and counselors to help children reduce stress and bring families and friends closer together by encouraging healthy coping skills, imagination, and understanding of both the mind and body.
A Positive Story to Promote Self-Confidence and Empathy
Jake’s story encourages children to not only try new things for themselves, but to also be kind to others who may be nervous as well. Knowing they aren’t alone and that others may need support, encouragement, or a little kindness as well will help create a kinder world, to appreciate differences, and to find connections. These topics are discussed in subtle, sweet, and impactful ways for both young readers and the supportive adults in their lives.

While many kids in grades K-5 (ages 6-11) will be able to read this story on their own or with assistance, parents and grandparents will enjoy reading the story to baby, making it the perfect baby shower gift. Jake the Growling Dog Goes to Doggy Daycare: A Children’s Book about Trying New Things, Friendship, Finding Comfort and Kindness is the second installment in the Jake the Growling Dog! A children’s picture book series written by Samantha Shannon and illustrated by Lei Yang. Through this book’s fifty-two vibrant pages children will able to learn about healthy ways to overcome their own fears, deal with stress, and cope with new situations.
The book is told through the eyes of the series star character, Jake. He is a sweet and joyful dog who has a tendency to growl. In this particular book, Jake is faced with the adventure of going to Doggy Daycare for a couple of days for the first time. This makes him nervous and scared. With the help of his best friend Neet helps Jake overcome his fears in the beginning. After settling in, Jake is able to overcome his conflicting feelings when faced with more situations. By the end, he makes new friends at Doggy Daycare.
The story is told in rhyming verse with colorful pictures featuring Jake that will capture young readers’ minds as they relate to his struggles. It is a great read for young children who might be faced with new situations or people. They will encounter guidance that can help their own self-confidence in these situations and empathy for others in similar situations while encouraging friendship. I recommend this book to school-agers, and parents to read to their children.
In” Jake the Growling Dog goes to Doggy Daycare by Samantha Shannon” Shannon uses wonderful colors to grab the children’s attention right off. This is a great thing as it is made to be educational and is geared towards children. Specifically, this book is geared to show through the illustration of an animal going to daycare and the feelings of fear and anxiety that Jake faces. Children can relate to this as they go to daycare or to school and have their own set of fears as they set out on their independence. Jake shows children that instead of running from their feelings and hiding them away, that it is actually normal to have them, and they can discuss them with someone if they would like. Not only does Shannon keep they children engage through the story with the pictures, colors and storyline, she has activities as well which was a wonderful idea to put work into the book. I read this book to my children over and over, and they continually love it and now my 6-year-old son reads it to my 5 year old daughter. As a parent who has children with PTSD/ASD/ADHD/Severe GAD I am thankful that Shannon’s book is helping them.
With my own 2 year old in mind, I wanted to read this book even though my daughter doesn’t suffer from fear (much to my dismay sometimes). Its about a dog who is worried about the new experience of going to doggy daycare. I liked the ideas section at the end for parents particularly, and I think it will be helpful to many people. Having anxiety myself I recognized several of the trick suggested. I think this book will be a hit for young children and the few toddlers who have a longer attention span, but I don’t think I could get my daughter to sit through it yet. I like the story. I think it will help many children relate to the adorable doggy, and feel normal about their own worries.
This is a lovely children’s book about Jake the dog who goes to doggy daycare for the first time when his owners go on holiday. He is a bit scared and worried about it so he goes to talk to his best friend. They agree on a plan and then Jaske sets off with his family to doggy daycare, he enjoys the journey there, but gets nervous at the actual place, but he is hoping that everyone will be friendly and that he enjoys himself. Will Jake be able to settle into this new experience or will he want to go home?
The book also goes on to talk about stress and how to relieve it in a way that a child would understand with colourful illustrations and a great flow. This book is one both adults and children alike can enjoy and find useful at the same time.

Jake is nervous when his family goes away for a weekend and he is being sent to doggy daycare. Will the other dogs like him or will his growl scare them away? A refreshing story for young children, Jake shows that it is okay to be nervous about new adventures, but that great things can come from it. Written in rhyme, the story is fun and the illustrations are beautiful. A wonderful story of facing fears and new experiences, Jake can help children adjust to changes and overcome fears.
Jake the Growling Dog Goes to Doggy Daycare is an adorable children’s book, perfect for ages 3-7. This book follows Jake and his best friend Neet, as he leaves home and stays in a doggy daycare for the first time. Shannon’s book touches a wide range of emotions throughout this book with Jake, and also includes helpful tips included in the back of the book. Written in couplets, this book a fun and easy read, and will instill a love of poetry in children at a young age. If you work in pre-k though first grade, this book would be perfect for your class.
5 out of 5 Stars!
Who wouldn’t love a book where a dog and a squirrel are best friends? While this is a bright eye-catching book with fun illustrations and a great story about trying new things and friendship, the really amazing part is at the end of the book! Shannon has provided a wonderful tool to talk with young children about how they may feel just before trying something new or when they are stressed. It has age-appropriate explanations for what the child may be feeling, how they can manage those feelings, and how to turn it around with self-confidence and imaginative play, and drawing/writing. This is such a wonderful conversation starter to help children learn confidence, bravery, and great mental health habits. Shannon created an interactive “guide” that allows children to learn that they are in charge of their body and can manage their feelings, and how their body responds so that they can practice mindfulness and go through life with tools to help them grow into confident, happy, kind, amazing human beings. I can’t recommend this enough to teachers and families of little ones! Your child will love Jake’s adventures with Neet, and the adult will love knowing they are preparing their child for a bright future!!

Jake the Growling Dog Goes to Doggy Daycare: A Children’s Book about New Experiences, Friendship, Stress Relief, and Kindness is the second book in the Jake the Growling Dog series by Samantha Shannon. The author has a background in educational counseling, and uses that to create this fun, bright, and engaging story for children (of all ages!). Jake does not want to leave the comforts of home and his snuggly bed in order to be around the other animals at Doggy Daycare. He is worried about new things and faces and what the others will think about him. With the help of his new friends and the Kindness Critters, Jake shows the reader that feeling this way sometimes is okay, and shows them how to work through it instead of running away. This story is interactive and the illustrations are vibrant and interesting. This will be a great tool for teaching our little ones how to work through certain emotions instead of being afraid of them. Whether at home or in school, Jake the Growling Dog would be an excellent resource to share with your children. I recommend this book with 5 out of 5 stars and will be checking out the other books by this author for future use with my daughter.
This is a delightful and cute story that I can see myself using with my students when we discuss new experiences, being nervous, and friendships. Though Jake and Neet are an unusual friend pair, they prove to us that friends come in all shapes and sizes.
Shannon reminds the reader that it’s okay to be afraid, to be nervous, and to lean on someone. That true friends help each other get through scary times through support and encouragement. Together we are invincible!
This is a well-written book. The rhyming pattern kept if flowy and fun. Jake the growling dog is so relatable in this tale. He is experiencing a new situation. He is going to doggy daycare for 2 days. He has never been there. He is nervous. Will the other dogs like him even though he growls all the time? Will he make new friends? What if he is scared? What if the others are scared of him?
We all go through these situations. The fun activities at the end of the story help remind children that what they are feeling is normal and okay. I do love the mindfulness activities. The breathing exercise has been very helpful with my grandson.
Jake the Growling Dog Goes to Doggy Daycare was a great feel-good children’s book. I loved the way that it showed that it’s ok to be scared, and shows children how easy it is to not be scared anymore if you put your best foot forward. The illustrations are bright, cheery, and Jake just looks so fluffy that you find yourself wanting to pet him. The story flows easily and it’s the perfect length for all young children. If you are looking for a great children’s book to read to your kids before bed then I highly recommend Jake the Growling Dog Goes to Doggy Daycare.

Book Review: Jake the Growling Dog Goes to Doggy Daycare: A Children’s Book about New Experiences, Friendship, Stress Relief, and Kindness (Jake the Growling Dog
Author: Samantha Shannon
FIVE STARS
Teaching children about how they are feeling and how to deal with those feelings is a very difficult thing, however Samantha Shannon has opened up a whole new world on this with this amazing book. Watching and learning how Jake deals with is unease in a new environment can help teach children coping mechanisms that they can also use in the future.
The interactive parts at the back of the book that help kids understand the story even more is GENIUS!!
The author used great colorful and sensory descriptors.
The storyline initially was not cohesive. It was unclear what the problem was or what the intentions of the characters were.
Once the story began to flow, it became more enjoyable. It initiates good conversation with children about new experiences and fears.
The resources and activities at the end of the story seem beneficial to children who may be struggling with starting school or being away from parents for the first time.
Jake the Growling Dog Goes to Doggy Daycare is a sweet story about a dog going to daycare and being worried about this. This was such a surprising story because it actually talked about the worry’s that children have. The story goes through how to help Jake and not demean his worries. The illustrations are great and beautiful! The story also has many little educational aspects (along with the major one) that one might not catch at first glance but were great to have in the story!! Was a great read!
This was such a delightful book to read. Who hasn’t experienced these feelings? We all have, and children especially in today’s world are experiencing this. I really enjoyed the main character Jake and was able to connect with him. The story flowed easily and had me wanting to turn to the next page to find out what happens next. The rhyming and “fun” of the words also made you feel like cheering on Jake and supporting him as his friend did.
This is a book that could and should be read to anyone who is feeling either stressed, or about to have a new experience. This book shows what a little Kindness and friendship can do. I give this book 5 stars.
This is a well written children’s book with a very important message of friendship and courage. Not just for little ones, this book is interactive, the illustrations are so detailed and the language is well chosen. It would make a great little addition to a home or classroom library, as it would suit multiple ages and could be read many times over. The added activities at the end are well thought out and makes the book so much more special.
Sweet kids book for kiddos going to daycare for the first time. They can learn from Jake as he makes new friends and tries something new. Great activities for kids to do for mindfulness at the end.
Super cute children’s book! I mean, being completely honest, Samantha Shannon had me at “dog”, so I was invested from the very start!
The book follows a dog named Jake who is experiencing something brand new, and in turn dealing with all the worry and anxiety that accompanies that. This is a very relatable experience for youth and adults alike. If we are being completely honest with ourselves, we were all Jake at one point in time. What better way to teach youth how to confront their anxieties then to give them a cute, fuzzy dog to relate to.
The story is well written, clear, concise and playful. I can say, without a doubt, that not only would I have loved and learned from this story as a young kid, but the kids in my family would love it as well. The interactive parts at the end make for a great opportunity to connect with your kids, and make this book a great asset for any classroom.

Rating 5 out 5
What an adorable book! My first thought when I read it was wow I need to read this to my grandchildren! Jake is such a relatable character. He worries and is stressed. He leans on a friend to help him through. I also love the extra material included in the book to walk parents (and grandparents) through helping their kids.
