Looking for Books about New Experiences and Managing Stress for Kids?
Jake the Growling Dog is a fun-loving tale about new adventures, friendship, handling stress, and overcoming fear.
Author and licensed educational counselor, Samantha Shannon, brings Jake back for this second tale about a dog who is different from other dogs and critters. After making some new friends at home in his first book when others began to see him as the sweet and kind dog he is despite his growly voice, now Jake’s family takes him somewhere new.
We’ve all been nervous at one time or another about a new experience, and Jake’s tale not only shows kids that they aren’t alone in having those butterflies in their tummy it also gives them gentle ideas on how to handle those worries and fears while having a blast with their favorite growly character and his furry friend.
Includes Conversation Starters and Activities for Children, Families, Schools, and Counselors to help with confidence, stress, and preparing for new experiences.
This story is packed with loads of fun, while also educating our little ones that they can overcome fears and cope with stress in a variety of ways. Along with Jake’s story, this picture book also includes talking points about why trying new things is important, what stress is and how it makes us feel, ways to cope with nerves and worries, a child-friendly discussion prompt about mindfulness, and a breathing activity.
These activities are perfect for families, schools, and counselors to help children reduce stress and bring families and friends closer together by encouraging healthy coping skills, imagination, and understanding of both the mind and body.
A Positive Story to Promote Self-Confidence and Empathy
Jake’s story encourages children to not only try new things for themselves, but to also be kind to others who may be nervous as well. Knowing they aren’t alone and that others may need support, encouragement, or a little kindness as well will help create a kinder world, to appreciate differences, and to find connections. These topics are discussed in subtle, sweet, and impactful ways for both young readers and the supportive adults in their lives.

While many kids in grades K-5 (ages 6-11) will be able to read this story on their own or with assistance, parents and grandparents will enjoy reading the story to baby, making it the perfect baby shower gift. Full of confidence and breathing activities that are great for kids, Jake’s story follows along and sets a great example for kids that no matter what you go through in life, new experiences can bring a lot of fun if you just let them! The activities were super easy just from reading them. I think young children would really enjoy this book!
Jake and his adventures is one of my favorite series. They are great for children of all ages and his experiences will teach them that they are not alone. In this book Jake goes to doggy daycare for the first time. He is worried that he won’t fit in or make friends. What he doesn’t know is that his family has a surprise for him. His best friend Neet is there to help him adjust. Will he learn that he is not the only one who is worried about this new adventure? Will he let himself have fun? This is a great book to show children that new adventures can be scary at first but give it a chance, it can be lots of fun. I highly recommend this book.

Jake the Growling Dog Goes to Doggy DayCare by Samantha Shannon
This is a cute book with adorable illustrations that follows a dog named Jake, as he goes to Doggy Daycare for the first time. Through this book the author touched on Jake’s fears related to this new experience, and feeling nervousness and stress about whether the other animals would like him or not. Through Jake’s squirrel friend Neet, we see how friends can help each other gain confidence by being supportive and encouraging one another. The story and added activities in the book teach kids easy coping skills, calming strategies, mindfulness and focused breathing techniques that kids can easily understand and practice themselves.
As a licensed clinical social worker, that works with children of all ages, I’ve used books like this one to help reach kids using real everyday things without making learning coping skills and relaxation techniques seem too difficult or boring. This book touches on bigger things that can lead to good conversations between adults and children as well as skills building for kids to learn to better handle their emotions and notice how their minds and bodies are connected when it comes to experiencing different emotions and situations.
This is a lovely little book for young children and toddlers. I love how colourful each page is and how the picture resonant with a young mind. It’s nice to have a story what they kids can relate to and Jake is extremely relatable. I love that Jake teaches us we are all different and need to accept each other as we are. This is a short book with a powerful message.
