This was the first Reacher novel I ever read, and it remains one of my favorites. The movie “Jack Reacher” is based on this book, but the book is vastly superior.
Five people are murdered in a city plaza in a mass shooting in Indiana. Following a trail of clues ex-Army sniper James Barr quickly becomes the only suspect in this act of terror. Once arrested Barr has only one comment, “Get Jack Reacher.” Reacher is more than a little surprised since he and Barr had been anything but friends. None the less he’s on the way and the more Reacher digs into the case the more things are not as they seem. This book was made into a movie with the poorly cast Tom Cruise. I felt the book, which has a different ending, was far better than the movie.
Hate the movie! Love the book!
Lee Child has created a character that makes you want to see the story through to the end, regardless of how late it is when you finally finish.
love all the Jack Reacher stories as they have gotten better as he gets older
I enjoyed the action in this story. I really liked Reacher’s character. I didn’t really get the storyline.
I love Jack Reacher books. So much adventure. Modern day Robin Hood.
Always read Lee Child for superb story building an adventure beyond the par.
Great read.
This is the book on which the first Reacher movie was (loosely) based. Never mind the stupidity of casting 5’5″ Tom Cruise as the 6’5″ Reacher, it DID bring Reacher to the masses. Every man’s fantasy, so wonderfully written it’ll keep you turning pages.
This book made me a fan of Lee Child for the rest of my life!
Can’t miss with a Jack Reacher book
Any book by Lee Child about Jack Reacher is a great read.
Jack Reacher–the guy says “Get Him for Me”– after being accused of the shootings.t seems that he must be guilty, Reacher thinks so… He says he has reformed, but all the evidence is to the contrary. Keep reading, the results may amaze you. A definite page turner.
What’s not to love about a Jack Reacher book?
I picked up half a dozen Jack Reacher novels in a thrift store and began reading from Book 1. I found all the books well-crafted and enjoyable, but the experience increasingly predictable. By book four, I realized I had lost all curiosity about what would happen next; it would be more of the same. New plots, new characters, new drama, variations on the same action, all competently written…but otherwise, a redundant experience for me; I felt as though I had already read every book. This may be typical of adventure serials, and I don’t knock it, if the reading experience scratches an itch you need scratched. I’ve more than once compulsively read every book in a series just to relive and savor a cherished experience (everything by Edgar Rice Burroughs, for example; or all of Rex Stouts Nero Wolf mysteries). Lee Childs just doesn’t scratch my particular itch.
Love all Reacher books!
My favorite book by my favorite contemporary thriller writer. The voice of Lee Childs is like a runaway train – it just barrels over everything and pulls you along in its wake.
I enjoyed One Shot a lot. Having seen the movie first, I liked seeing the differences between the two. I found the character of Jack Reacher to be far more interesting in the book than I expected. The “honorable hero” is sometimes one-dimensional but I found Jack to be very complicated and well-developed. Plus, it’s an exciting story. It kept me turning the pages.
Lee Child is a masterful story teller.
