Kate, Aubrey, and Jenny first met as college roommates and soon became inseparable, despite being as different as three women can be. Kate was beautiful, wild, wealthy, and damaged. Aubrey, on financial aid, came from a broken home, and wanted more than anything to distance herself from her past. And Jenny was a striver–brilliant, ambitious, and determined to succeed. As an unlikely friendship formed, the three of them swore they would always be there for each other.
But twenty years later, one of them is standing at the edge of a bridge, and someone is urging her to jump.
How did it come to this?
Kate married the gorgeous party boy, Aubrey married up, and Jenny married the boy next door. But how can these three women love and hate each other? Can feelings this strong lead to murder? When one of them dies under mysterious circumstances, will everyone assume, as is often the case, that it’s always the husband?
A suspenseful, absorbing novel that examines the complexities of friendship, It’s Always the Husband will keep readers guessing right up to its shocking conclusion.

It’s Always the Husband was full of twists and turns that kept me guessing until the end. Campbell did a great job creating a cast of characters that I was invested in as a reader — some I loved, some I detested. I will definitely read more by this author.
Loved it!!!! There is so much going on in this book! I love a good thriller—and even more when they keep you guessing. This keeps you guessing to the very end. The. Very. End (don’t you dare skip to the last page and look!!!!).
Amazing! I’ve already recommended to several others! I love watching them struggle with who they think is the guilty party!
Friendships begun in childhood often take unexpected twists and turns, and what happens with these three women will keep you glued to the page from start to finish.
A compelling and twisting story of friendship, buried secrets, and revenge, IT’S ALWAYS THE HUSBAND gets deep beneath the surface of the ties that bind. Intricately plotted and driven by an undeniable momentum, Michele Campbell’s riveting story grabs on, holds tight, and haunts even after the book is closed. Don’t miss it!
Wow! I really enjoyed this book. The first half was a little slow, but it still held my attention. The second half of the book was very twisty. Just when I thought I had everything figured out the author threw a new twist at me. Great read!
This was an excellent read about three friends who aren’t really good for one another. The story was well plotted and the characters were richly developed, and there was plenty of twists and turns that really kept me guessing until the very end. I thought at one point I had it figured out, but no, so great job by the author. Grab it!
Y’all…. I thought I had this book figured out…. I. DID. NOT. Even in the last hundred pages, I thought I saw what was coming, nope. You don’t figure it out until literally the last two pages. I read this book in 3 days that’s how hooked I was.
Excellent. And what an ending…. WOW
IT’S ALWAYS THE HUSBAND by Michele Campbell had me tied up in knots. I was sure I knew “who done it,” and I was wrong. Ohhhh, so wrong! The plot twists in the well-orchestrated storyline are excellent! And the simultaneous twenty-year time span (not easy to pull off) is done with finesse. I highly recommend this book.
Again, not a cozy, but a good read. I’m hardly ever surprised by a mystery’s ending (one of the sad parts about being a mystery writer), but this one got me!
I won this book as part of a Goodreads First Reads giveaway.
Kate, Jenny, and Aubrey have been friends since rooming together in college. Inseparable, the girls thought they’d be best friends forever. Twenty years later, their lives aren’t quite what they expected and things are slowly unraveling. When one of them is standing on the edge, will she jump and take them all with her…..or will she be pushed?
This was quite the page turner! If it wasn’t for having to sleep and go to work, I don’t think I would have put this book down. It focuses on three friends whose lives couldn’t be more different. As it jumps from their college lives to present day, it’s filled with twists and turns that make your head spin. Even though they kind of lose touch with each other over the years, their lives end up colliding again with such force that it makes you wonder if they ever really were friends to begin with.
Each character has a very distinct personality that sets her apart from the others. So different they are that it’s hard to find anything that would hold them together….and yet it works. I can’t say I liked any one character over another, as on some level, none of them are particularly likeable. However I didn’t dislike any of them either.

It’s Always the Husband was a quick read, but only because I wanted to know where this book was really going. This story begins with three women who share a dorm in a prestigious college. One gal comes from a poor background, and she’s incredibly naive. Another is street savvy and quickly takes the role of problem solver of the three, and the last gal was incredibly hard to like or relate to as she was so full of herself with little regard for others. This story quickly turns into another story 22 years later where we find the three gals now in life roles it would have been hard to imagine them back in college. I found the three gals pretty shallow and each pretty selfish. It was like they were all going through the motions of doing good for others, but it was obvious none really meant any of it. Michele Campbell did lead me down several false turns, and I was surprised at the end so that was worth it.
At the heart of this novel is the story of three friends, who meet as college roommates, and the ways in which their relationships change over 20 years. When they meet:
– Kate is a beauty who comes with money and power.
– Jenny is the hard worker, who gravitates to the role of caretaker.
– And Aubrey, who comes from nothing, wants nothing more than simple acceptance.
As they become closer, and even sharing some romantic entanglements, each begins to use the others to further her own ends. And deep resentments fester. When all three witness the same trauma involving a close friend, circumstances force them into a coverup.
Twenty years later, they find themselves living in the same small town, alongside a few of the same men from college. Only now, many of these friends’ old assumptions no longer hold true. And the three women discover how easily trust can become betrayal and buried secrets threaten comfortable homes and careers.
It’s a quick read, with lots of twists and turns, and reminds me a bit of a Liane Moriarty novel, where you don’t really learn the full story until the very last page. But one more thing – I can’t for the life of me figure out why the author and publisher are using the title “It’s Always the Husband” because Hint: the title is a spoiler.
So, if you are inclined to reading drama/suspense novels, then this book is jam full. When you think you have solved the puzzel, oh hell no, you were side tracked. The suspense keeps you right down to the last page.
For me though, i thought the book didnt really start until somewhere past halfway through. I understand that the author wanted to show the correlation between the earlier chapters and the latter but too much time was spent in the beginning going over mindless issues. That by itself, could be another stand alone book.
I would’ve stopped reading it a long time ago but resisted because i did not want to add this book to my “hard to read/cannot finish” list.
Not my best read. Definitely nowhere near “the woman in cabin 10”.
i plan to read each and every book she writes.
Every character was unlikable, the ending wrapped up way too neatly.
If this is what a ‘posh’ private college is all about, I’m glad I never had the opportunity to attend one. Lots of psychologically damaged people in this story! It will keep you reading, just to see how it all ends!
It was a good story that took a lot of unexpected twists and turns.
A suspenseful tale that crossed over into Women’s Fiction, a nice blend for me. I loved following the back and forth unfolding of the relationships formed in college to where they ended up in the present day. Campbell kept me guessing. Just when I thought I had it all figured out, a new twist emerged.
I am giving this book 4 stars only because it took a while to dive into this novel, it goes into great detail of the 3 main characters lives during their college years, and I began to get bored. I was expecting more of a thriller. The thrilling part of this book comes at about the last hour or so, only then did I not want to put it down. I debated not finishing this book, but I am glad I did because the ending did not disappoint.
