“Addictive like all Kylie Scott books, you’ll swoon, laugh, ache, put your life on hold, and compulsively read until the wee hours of the night—only to reread the whole thing the next morning. Perfection!” – Katy Evans, New York Times bestselling authorReturning home for her father’s wedding was never going to be easy for Adele. If being sent away at eighteen hadn’t been bad enough, the mess she … bad enough, the mess she left behind when she made a pass at her dad’s business partner sure was.
Fifteen years older than her, Pete had been her crush for as long as she could remember. But she’d misread the situation—confusing friendliness for undying love. Awkward. Add her father to the misunderstanding, and Pete was left with a broken nose and a business on the edge of ruin. The man had to be just as glad as everyone else when she left town.
Seven years later, things are different. Adele is no longer a kid, but a fully grown adult more than capable of getting through the wedding and being polite. But all it takes is seeing him again to bring back those old feelings.
Sometimes first loves are the truest.

Addictive like all Kylie Scott books, you’ll swoon, laugh, ache, put your life on hold, and compulsively read until the wee hours of the night – only to reread the whole thing the next morning. Perfection!
It Seemed Like A Good Idea At The Time baited me with it’s tempting cover, hooked it’s forbidden claws into me with it’s premise, and was in fact a good idea for a novel… But it was the misconceptions I had that ultimately effected my own personal romance with Adele Reid and Pete Gallagher.
First, I want to feel that the older character is older and not the same age as the younger character. In this case the hero, Pete didn’t at all seem like he had fifteen years on Adele. Secondly, seven years has passed so I expect some form of growth and maturity in both characters. Pete’s actions and some of Adele’s thoughts, inward and out, showed neither until the end of the book. In many ways she was still eighteen, not twenty-five and he was right there with her. Lastly, I didn’t feel a connection to their relationship. It wasn’t so intense that it felt tangible to me. This girl, moi, loves the awkward romances, yet sometimes their conversations felt immature, weird, and slightly forced instead of natural.
Though It Seemed Like A Good Idea At The Time wasn’t as illicit as I presumed it would be, it was all kinds of sexy, had some really relatable quotes my younger self totally felt a pull to, and of course it had Shanti, a secondary character that was the embodiment of supporting and carried the story at times!
A romance that isn’t slow burn, but definitely slow paced, Kylie Scott crashes the past and present day with angst in the form of unrequited love.
Loved it and the rich Australian setting added whimsy to the whole story.
2 STARS!
“We were both messed-up people in our own sweet way. I guess two wrongs really didn’t make a right.”
I really struggled on what to rate this book. You can even ask my bestie, Brie as we both had similar opinions.
Anyways, onto my review. It Seemed Like A Good Idea at the Time by Kylie Scott was one of those books that you are immediately drawn to by the alluring blurb and stunning cover, but once you start reading you wonder why you wanted to read it from the get go.
Firstly, we have Pete Gallagher who acted more like he was 25 then 40. I blame Alexa Riley for this “daddy” complex. They know how to write a thrilling and sexy age-gape romance effortlessly, even when it’s over the top with the hero’s possessive alpha ways.
Next up was Adele, constantly acting 18 instead of 25 with her antics. She was funny-I give her that, but she didn’t mature at all in those seven years since she last saw Pete.
Lastly, there was no connection or spark between them at all. The sexy times were hot, but Pete’s back and forth behavior overshadowed those. Add in some of the drama that later creeps in the story and you’re just about done #awkward
Shanti, I feel was the saving grace throughout the story. She brought her words of wisdom and quirkiness, giving the story a bright spot.
Overall, It Seemed Like A Good Idea at the Time wasn’t at all what I was expecting. I’ve been a fan of Kylie’s since reading Lick and I’ll continue reading her other books, but this novel didn’t do it for me. #screwexpectationstheysuck
ARC received for an honest review
I have not read a word of Kylie Scott’s that I haven’t adored, and it is no different with It Seemed Like A Good Idea At The Time.
The subject matter may be a bit taboo to some people – girl and dad’s best friend. The age different may be a bit of a problem for some people – 15 years – however none of this was a problem for me as there was nothing i felt inappropriate.
I adore Adele and that she goes for and sticks up for what she wants, even when everyone is telling her not to. She is blunt, no filter and tells it like it is. She is quirky and funny and I just want to be her friend.
Pete… oh Pete. How I adore you one minute, and want to scream at you next (and not the good type of screaming. But in the end I can’t help but love you (plus, you are close to my age so woohoo, no pervy cougar feelings!)
We’ve all done stupid thing with / to get the attention of our crushes, right? Well, I don’t think Adele was thinking things would go the way they did though.
I just wanted Adele and Pete to find their balance, their HEA – but you will need to read for yourself to find out what happens.
Wonderfully written, great characters and a fun yet emotional story. I read this book in one evening, and can’t wait to see what Ms Scott brings us next.
Yay the amazing Kylie Scott has done it again. I don’t think that I have ever been disappointed while reading one of her books and this story was no exception because there was just so much to love.
It Seemed Like a Good Idea at the Time is a fun, steamy, and slow burning forbidden romance that will have readers laughing out loud time and time again from Adele and Pete’s hilarious banter. I mean who doesn’t love a good age gap with one of your father’s closest friends, no one that’s who! This story had my heart beating in overdrive with their off the charts angsty romance that pulled on all of my heartstrings. Oh my goodness I just freaking loved these two so much and I couldn’t get enough of them! They will captivate your heart and hold tight from beginning to end.
This was an amazing read and I couldn’t put it down until I finished. Every time I pick up a new Kylie Scott read I find myself falling for her words and always end up devouring one of her books in one sitting. It Seemed Like a Good Idea at the Time is a great example of that fact and I strongly recommend checking it out as soon as possible!
Your Kindle will thank you. Trust.
3.75 stars –IT SEEMED LIKE A GOOD IDEA AT THE TIME by Kylie Scott is a contemporary, adult, second chance, erotic, romance story line focusing on twenty-five year old Adele Reid , and forty-year old Pete Gallagher.
Told from first person point of view (Adele Reid) IT SEEMED LIKE A GOOD IDEA AT THE TIME follows the rebuilding relationship between twenty-five year old Adele Reid , and forty-year old Pete Gallagher. Nine years earlier, a then sixteen-year old Adele Reid, was pawned off onto her father’s new hire, thirty-one year old Peter Gallagher. For six weeks, every summer, Adele would visit her father, only to find herself ‘babysat’ by her father’s employee, an employee for whom Adele had developed feelings, feelings she revealed after her eighteenth birthday. Adele’s father Andrew, having discovered by accident, his daughter’s feelings towards his most trusted employee, inadvertently forces his daughter out of his life, and that of the man with whom she had fallen in love. Fast forward to present day, wherein Adele’s father Andrew is about to remarry, leaving Adele, once again, in the hands of Peter Gallagher, the man who destroyed her heart, and continues to send mixed messages with every taunt, rejection, and condescending remark. What ensues is the acrimonious but rebuilding friendship and growing love between Peter and Adele, and the fall-out as Peter continues to push away the woman with whom he was falling in love.
Peter Gallagher struggles to accept change in his well-ordered life, and the return of Adele Reid, dredges up too many painful memories of a time long ago. Adele has never stopped loving the man who broke her heart, a man who will continue to send mix messages of love and hate for a woman he had hoped moved on from the past.
The relationship between Adele and Pete is one of second-chances, of a sort, for two people whose friendship was destroyed by misunderstanding, betrayal, heart break and humiliation. At one time, Pete was able to tell Adele everything about his life but time, maturity and a sense of loss, has hardened Peter Gallagher’s heart to love and a happily ever after. The $ex scenes are intimate, erotic and seductive but our hero’s inability to let go; his back and forth, bi-polar emotional up and downs with Adele Reid was disheartening and disappointing. Our heroine is left floundering as to the how, what and why of Peter’s battle between wanting Adele Reid or letting her go, an unattractive quality for any story line hero.
We are introduced to Adele’s father Andrew, and his new wife Shanti; Peter’s current / ex-girlfriend Leona; furniture designer Jeremy Karas; as well as Adele’s roommates Maddie and Hazel.
IT SEEMED LIKE A GOOD IDEA AT THE TIME is an emotional read; a heart breaking story about two people caught up in memories from the past, a past mired in pain, bitterness, rejection and regret. Although some of the scenes were intended to add humor and fun, the desired affect was lost due in part to the ongoing rejection and heart breaking turmoil. The premise is engaging; the characters are colorful and dynamic; the romance is conflicted, infuriating and suffers from the hero’s constant rebuffs and dismissals.

Boy Oh Boy!!! Does Kylie Scott know how to write a forbidden romance!! Talk about ANGST!!! This book had my heart going all over the place.
I absolutely LOVED It Seemed Like A Good Idea at the Time!!! This book was different from her other books, but still so much like what we have come to expect from her stories. I swept up in the storyline of this story and I loved the heroine of the story. It did take me a little while to warm up to the Hero of the story, but in the end he stole my heart.
It Seemed Like A Good Idea At the Time is a standalone novel, told solely from from Adele POV. I think that might be my only complaint about this book. I would’ve liked to have heard Pete’s POV at certain points in the story. But it didn’t take away from me enjoying this story. This is a forbidden romance. This is probably one of my favorite forbidden romance novels that I have read so far. I know this is also one of my all time favorite Kylie Scott’s books. This story flowed well and the pace worked for these characters. This is a slow burn, but this story really couldn’t be told any other way.
What I liked the most about this story was that even though there is the emotional aspect of the story, it was also funny and had some spicy sexy times as well. I loved Adele so much in this story. My heart broke for her on many occasion but I loved her sass and quick witted comments. She definitely kept Pete on his toes.
This story follows the journey of Adele and Pete. Adele is a young woman who, when she was eighteen was sent away. She also at the young age of 18 made a pass at her dad’s business partner, who happens to be much older than her. To say she left things a little messy is an understatement. Fast forward 7 years and she is back home for her dad’s wedding. And forced to face Pete again. Now she is an adult and willing to put things in the past and just move forward. But will Pete be willing to let bygones be bygones?? Can these two get past the past incident and get on the right track again?? Read this book o find out.
I loved how Ms. Scott wrote this story. I enjoyed the flashbacks to show the connection and friendship that Adele and Pete began years ago. I also loved how she started to book in the thick of the story!! No unnecessary build up or filler…we got right to the point!!!
I would 100% recommend this book to anyone who is a fan of angst filled forbidden romance. Also if you like a friends to enemies to lovers story this is one you will want to read. Anyone who is a fan of Kylie Scott’s books, you don’t want to miss this GEM!!!
“He stood in the hallway, starting at me for a moment. Not saying anything along the lines of how it was good to see me.”
When we first meet Adele and Peter, she has traveled home for her father’s wedding. She is set to stay with Peter, her dad’s best friend, business partner and neighbor. They both instantly know what an epically bad idea this is. The tension is palpable. The last time they saw each other, Adele not only bared her soul to Peter, 15 years her senior, by pledging her love but she also bared her breasts at her 18th birthday party. Which her father saw. Tears were shed, fists were thrown and Adele ran away to escape the stigma and embarrassment of her “boobytrapping” Peter.
We get a sweet glimpse of how they met and how their relationship progressed from when Adele was young. Peter was an uncle figure but had no idea that Adele had formed a crush by the time she was 18. He always felt a connection with her, but it was an innocent one. A protective one. Until she got older. When Adele returns after years away, Peter instantly feels things he doesn’t think he should. Adele is a woman now. All woman. The sass he once thought “cute” he now craves. The attraction is simply too much to deny. For the first time ever, Adele has hope that things will finally work between them. But not for long.
“How many times could you get your heart broken by the same person before you finally wised up?”
Can Peter and Adele get past the obstacles between them? Their age? Her father? Living in different cities? This story will make your heart swell and plummet. Once again, Kylie Scott has given us a world we want to live in and characters we want more of.
Really enjoyed this age gap/fathers best friend romance! The back and forth banter between the two main characters and the friendship that was formed early on is what really grabbed my attention and held it. So many that I’ve read lately focus entirely on a physical attraction and I can’t feel the emotional connections between those characters. Yet this one…I witness their friendship building early on and then the physical came later. I really feel that even though there were some things that might have irked me throughout this story that friendship is what made all the difference in this one for me.
The author tells this story alternating between a young teenage Adele who falls in love with her dad’s coworker/friend and her 25 year old self coming back for her dad’s wedding. Their friendship is formed early on during her teenage years after she ends up spending so much time with him due to her dad working a lot. These are my favorite moments of them throughout the entire book. They are building this friendship early on that Pete hasn’t been able to emotionally build with ANYONE else due to his own personal reasons. You might wonder how a grown man can build a friendship with a teenager… Because she was safe! Read it and you’ll see why. He was able to form this deep friendship with her at a young age because there were no physical or relationship requirements…they just had this emotional connection and camaraderie that is very difficult to find in others who expect more than you’re willing or ready to give. Adele and her mouth had me laughing more than once; the woman that she grew into was even bolder and feistier than her teenage self. Throughout the entire story she was the ONE person who I felt brought out the best in Pete and was always there for him. Their relationship just had a different vibe for me from the get go and I loved it!
The only thing that bothered me is I would have loved to have had Pete’s POV; I think this would have helped tremendously in connecting with the way he felt about her.
I don’t remember where I saw this one but I’m glad I came across it; I really did enjoy it!
It’s perfect if you love fathers best friend/age gap romances!
Adele has always had a crush on her fathers best friend Pete, who lives next door. Adele does something to show her affection towards Pete who did not react the way she wanted. Fast forward Adele returns for her fathers wedding and has to live with Pete. Adele and Pete are forced to deal with the past and living together for awhile. I loved how we see Pete and Adele in the past as friends and as adult turn that friendship in to something more. Kylie Scott has better book while this wasn’t my favorite it was good.
I enjoyed it the book it seemed fitting for Adele and Pete’s characters!
First of all, I love the title of this book but what really got my attention was the blurb. I mean who doesn’t love a forbidden romance (almost second chance romance too)?
Adele hasn’t been home for seven long years, after a very uncomfortable shirt off show down embarrassment she never came back, but now she’s finally driving home for her dad’s wedding and she’ll be staying at Pete’s house. Pete… her first crush, her first love, her father’s former employee, current business partner, the main reason she had to leave.
Pete is 15 years older than Adele but he’s still holding a grudge after the way Adele had to leave. 7 years later, his business partner is getting married and suddenly he has to play host to Adele since she’s staying in his guest room, they haven’t spoken since she left and to say that things are awkward is an understatement.
Honestly, I was hooked pretty fast and I read It Seemed Like a Good Idea at the Time in one sitting, Kylie Scott is an amazing story teller and her stories are so well written, everything just flows amazingly. I love Adele, her personality and her dialogues/monologues are absolutely hilarious, she’s a very strong heroine, she’s funny, holds her own and she’s so open with Pete, it’s almost disarming and refreshing at the same time. She’s definitely the star of this romance! I also loved their chemistry and the fact that Adele had a backbone, she drove Pete crazy and I loved it! The secondary characters were also great, especially her dad’s fiancée but I did struggle a little with Pete. I get that he was broken, that he had issues, I even understand his background, yet he didn’t won me over, not completely. Sometimes, he just didn’t act very mature. Still, I really enjoyed this story. Definitely, not my favorite hero but Adele… Adele is gold! A fun, sexy, beautifully written forbidden romance, with plenty of chemistry, funny moments and fabulous banter.
This was my first read by Kylie Scott and I’m trying to decide on how to rate this book. While I didn’t love it, I didn’t dislike it either. I do enjoy a good forbidden romance and the age gap didn’t bother me, but I just felt that both characters needed to grow up. Even Pete, who is the “adult” in this story, needed a good swift kick in the rear at times. There does need to be some growth with the characters and I feel like that just didn’t happen.
While this story does have its moments, funny banter, and some sexy scenes – I felt that both Pete and Adele didn’t have chemistry. The character I enjoyed the most was Shanti – she made the book more enjoyable to read.
I found it to be a quick and an enjoyable read overall.
This one is about Adele and Pete. Friends for a long time but a fifteen year age difference was a problem for him. Adele has loved Pete forever but feelings were not returned. On her 18th birthday she decided it was time to tell him. After the drama of that she left her home town for University and never looked back. Now she’s back for her fathers wedding. Can she make him see they are meant to be?.
Loved this book, the storyline, the characters, everything.
Although I know that the author, Kylie Scott, is Autralian, all the books I’ve read by her have taken place in the United States. It was interesting to read a story in a country I’ve always wanted to visit.
This story didn’t go quite how I had thought it would, but I wasn’t disappointed. There was a definite trajectory this book had to take and the author took it there, and then some. I didn’t know whether to feel bad for Pete for the situation he was put in, or feel sympathy for Adele for the humiliation she felt from her past declarations to Pete.
The age difference between Pete and Adele could have ended up creepy because of her age when they first met. Yet, because the author kept this narrative from Adele’s perspective, it never crossed that line. For all intents and purposes, Pete really did keep things on the up and up with Adele in the past. She was a very good friend and confidant to him, but his feeling for her never seemed to pass over into the inappropriate area. Of course, the friendship Adele and Pete forged was viewed quite differently through the eyes of a teenage girl.
I didn’t get the same amount of warm-fuzzies as I usually get from this author. They popped up here and there, but Pete’s idiocy and treatment of Adele at times kept me from going all in. I’m not really saying that’s a bad thing though. The story was tough and real and was more angsty than butterflies and flowers, so it seems fitting I wasn’t a ball of warm-fuzzies throughout.
There are quite a few fun little exchanges this couple has. Adele has a lot of sass and she made me laugh. Toward the end of the book there is a Harry Potter conversation that will make me love Adele forever.

I really enjoyed “It Seemed Like a Good Idea at the Time” by Kylie Scott. I loved that this story wasn’t all “puppies and rainbows”. It was very well developed and the characters engaging from the first page to the last.
If you are a fan of contemporary romance – than this is a must have for your collection.
Happy Reading..enjoy!
Super cute story
I don’t know what to say about this book. I absolutely enjoyed it. I can’t remember the last time I breezed through a romance book this fast. I was sucked in from the start!
I loved these characters. I could feel their frustration and chemistry from a mile away. I wanted nothing more than for them to collide in a most delicious way. I knew when it happened it would be absolutely glorious and torturous at the same time. I can’t say that I was wrong.
This book is full of push and pull. My heart clenched a handful of times. The rollercoaster I was excruciatingly rocky from the get go. I turned the pages, refusing to allow my eyes to fill and spill.
Being truthful, I didn’t expect to enjoy this book as much as I did. It was a great surprise since I hadn’t read one of Scott’s books in a while. She really outdid herself with this book!
