Lily hasn’t always had it easy, but that’s never stopped her from working hard for the life she wants. She’s come a long way from the small town in Maine where she grew up – she graduated from college, moved to Boston, and started her own business. So when she feels a spark with a gorgeous neurosurgeon named Ryle Kincaid, everything in Lily’s life suddenly seems almost too good to be true.
Ryle is assertive, stubborn, maybe even a little arrogant. He’s also sensitive, brilliant, and has a total soft spot for Lily, but Ryle’s complete aversion to relationships is disturbing. Even as Lily finds herself becoming the exception to his “no dating” rule, she can’t help but wonder what made him that way in the first place.
As questions about her new relationship overwhelm her, so do thoughts of Atlas Corrigan – her first love and a link to the past she left behind. He was her kindred spirit, her protector. When Atlas suddenly reappears, everything Lily has built with Ryle is threatened.
With this bold and deeply personal novel, It Ends With Us is a heart-wrenching story and an unforgettable tale of love that comes at the ultimate price.

This book was excellently written and devastating to read. I took one star off my rating because I had no idea what a dark turn it was going to take when I started reading. The book description does not give any clues. Hoover did an exceptional job at taking me into the head of a domestic abuse victim. It Ends with Us is a moving novel, but I believe it could be very triggering for some readers.
Colleen Hoover is the queen of romance. She writes emotional stories that touches the heart deeply while creating a love between two people that I believe only exist in fairytales.
A complicated, emotional read. Definitely be warned that this is not an easy one, and while the ending is not dark, this isn’t a HEA kind of story.
“His touch is everything I need and everything I shouldn’t.”
This book!
Yea, if you allow yourself to get lost it in, it might wreck you a couple times.
I’m not new to Colleen Hoover but there was a certain circumstance (won’t tell you, no spoilers!) made me actually curse her out and hate her for a moment.
Elicting those feelings is impressive enough of course.
The writing’s also addictive and she did a great job setting the book in Boston, so mad props there.
What I especially think is note-worthy is, like in other books, she has a way of putting things in perspective.
Think anyone who stays in an abusive relationship is asking for it? Stupid? Bringing it on themselves? Think again. It’s really easy to judge when you aren’t actually in the sitation.
This lends perspective – and a few different ones at that – to an important subject. Everyone should read this. It might just open your eyes and your mind.
I don’t usually do this, even for Colleen but … 5 stars.
This book was incredibly moving. I read this book months ago, and it still sticks with me. It was hauntingly realistic, yet also shows the beautiful strength and resiliency of the main character. This story gave me all the feels- I was crying and raging at times, and smiling whimsically at other times. This story is the full package.
perfect.
One of my favorites!
I absolutely fell in love with this book and these characters. Having been in an abusive, unhealthy relationship myself made me really connect with lily in a way that I’ve never connected with a character before. This book will make you laugh, cry, and feel something swell in your chest. It was so easy to read! Read it in two days.
Oh, my gosh. Words can’t describe how much I loved this book. Colleen Hoover is on my auto-buy list now.
This book tore me into a million tiny pieces!
Talk about feels. This book is an incredibly touching story. It is both difficult and beautiful at the same time. Lily is an amazing character. Without giving this story away there’s not much more I can say about it. I will say read the author’s note at the end. This is not something I normally do, but for some reason I started skimming the first couple lines and then devoured it. Absolutely amazing.
My first Colleen Hoover book and it won’t be my last! An excellent read with a thought-provoking twist. I wrote about a similar subject (don’t want to give anything away!) in my first novel and the way that Hoover approaches it here is terrific and will leave you thinking about the characters after you finished the book.
I’ve been a volunteer advocate with the Sexual Assault Center for years, which means I show up at the hospital when someone is assaulted. (I don’t want to go off on a tangent here, just giving the why.) This book resonated on so many levels for me since domestic violence is another facet of the same power/dominance issue. While part of me wanted to shake Lily, another part understood her push/pull of love/hate.
The characters drive this story.
Get ready to question your assumptions.
I’m starting to realize that none of my reviews from Amazon have transferred over to Goodreads which is frustrating because I read this book YEARS ago when it came out. But I’ll do it justice now with an OH MY GOD this book is so raw and emotional I can’t even!
This is another one of my fave Colleen books. She writes the most messed up stories that grip you down to your soul and make you want to scream. This whole book was like a tortuous game of tug-of-war. Which ending is going to win out? The one we all wanted because we’re suckers for a fucked up man redeeming himself… Or the one that’s more realistic.
And of course reality won this round. And the HEA lovers in us were pissed off that we never found out if Atlas was a thing.. But that’s what I love most about this book. Sometimes we need a little reality. I get very sick very quick of those cookie-cutter romance novels. I mean, how many times can a billionaire playboy fall for the quiet virgin?
This book fulfilled me on a deeper emotional level, which is exactly what my favorite romance novels do. Thank you, Colleen. As always you’ve ruined me in the best possible way.
This is a great book I have read more than once.
A book with an amazing unexpected flow that hunts you to finishing the book in two days maximum. I haven’t cried for a book as much as this, it was – with all my heart- the best book I have ever read in my life. the book actually have my dried up tears in the pages.
This was my first Colleen Hoover book, and from the author’s note, it is different from her other books. It portrays how the world of domestic abuse is not black and white – something I also attempted to do in my novel. I thought Hoover did a great job of taking the reader inside the struggle of whether to stay and forgive – or leave. And why that decision is fraught with strong and conflicted emotions. It was painful, heartbreaking, empathic, hopeful and ultimately empowering. An important read for anyone who has experienced domestic abuse as well as anyone who has struggled to understand it.
This book by Colleen Hoover made me lose sleep cause I just couldn’t put it down. It gripped me from page one. Love the characters, loved the flowers, loved the doctor, loved everything about it! I think… this might be my favorite book by this author.
Good book I really love it
This is the story of Lily. She grew up in a home witnesses her father abusing her mother. Her mother never left, and she never understood why. Lily spent her whole life hating her father, and when he dies, she still can’t find it in her heart to forgive him.
When she was a teenager, she met a boy named Atlas. He was homeless – his mother and step father kicking him out of the house at age 18 because they couldn’t get along. He is staying at an abandoned house near Lily’s and she invites him in one day to get a shower and a change of clothes. Her kindness to him leads to a friendship that soon turns to love. When Atlast announces that after he finishes high school, he is going into the Marines, Lily knows she will never see him again.
At age 25, Lily now lives in Boston and is trying to decide what she wants to do with her life. She has always loved gardening and plants and wants to open her own floral shop. One night, while she is on a roof contemplating her future, she meets Ryle – a handsome neurosurgeon. They soon find themselves in a relationship that is moving faster than either of them ever expected.
But their relationship soon takes a dark turn, and Lily has to make a choice. Does she stay or does she break a cycle from her past? Is she strong enough to make the hard choices when faced with an uncertain future?
This book was really really good. At first I thought we were heading down a “50 shades of gray” trail (a book I will NEVER read), but I was wrong. The writing was excellent and the story was powerful. It was a very fast read and very hard to put down. I stayed up late a few nights to finish this one.
I am happy I decided to read this book. It is going on the list of a favorite for this year.
