NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • “[Kaling is] like Tina Fey’s cool little sister. Or perhaps . . . the next Nora Ephron.”—The New York Times Mindy Kaling has lived many lives: the obedient child of immigrant professionals, a timid chubster afraid of her own bike, a Ben Affleck–impersonating Off-Broadway performer and playwright, and, finally, a comedy writer and actress prone to starting fights with … prone to starting fights with her friends and coworkers with the sentence “Can I just say one last thing about this, and then I swear I’ll shut up about it?”
Perhaps you want to know what Mindy thinks makes a great best friend (someone who will fill your prescription in the middle of the night), or what makes a great guy (one who is aware of all elderly people in any room at any time and acts accordingly), or what is the perfect amount of fame (so famous you can never get convicted of murder in a court of law), or how to maintain a trim figure (you will not find that information in these pages). If so, you’ve come to the right book, mostly!
In Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me?, Mindy invites readers on a tour of her life and her unscientific observations on romance, friendship, and Hollywood, with several conveniently placed stopping points for you to run errands and make phone calls. Mindy Kaling really is just a Girl Next Door—not so much literally anywhere in the continental United States, but definitely if you live in India or Sri Lanka.

Love this lady – she is candid, heartfelt, and doesn’t hold back for her audience. It was an uplifting book full of endearing quips and totally off-the-wall advice. Just what a short read should do, entertain.
I read this book on a flight from LA to NY (6 hours) and I seriously laughed out loud the entire time. The poor people sitting next to me must have thought I was crazy, but it was SO funny.
Absolutely LOVE Mindy
Mindy is the kind of person that would easily become one of your closest friends. I loved the way she writes and you can almost hear her talk. I would recommend this to anyone who needs a pick me up.
Mindy Khaling is just plain funny! I enjoy everything she writes.
She is effortlessly funny. Both her books are wonderful.
I love Mindy and could hear her endearing voice on every single page of this book. I love the anecdotes and the look at her life pre-Mindy Project. I couldn’t stop laughing!
Just delightful!
This book is just okay for me. Mindy Kaling shares memories and observances. She seems like a really nice person and someone that I would enjoy being around, but this book did not hold my attention. I would read a page or two before bed and not really want to pick it up again. That isn’t to say there aren’t some parts that made me smile. A huge …
I loved this book. Mindy Kahling is a graceful and funny writer and makes you feel like you are at brunch with a bestie hearing her tell the best stories!
I had never heard of Mindy nor her shows, but my son and husband knew her by name so they are probably just cooler than I am or have more time to spend on entertainment than I do. She was funny and I liked how “herself” she was, even if she sometimes didn’t love it all. As a person who is also “herself” I definitely appreciated that. I don’t cuss …
I find Mindy adorable and love every thing she writes, especially her shows. This book was no exception. She is a real talent and inspiration to young women of all backgrounds.
This is an upbeat, charming book that really put me in a better mood.
Made me a long term fan of hers.
I could be Mindy Kaling’s best friend if I wasn’t twenty years older than she and she didn’t already have one. So much of this book was as if I were reading my own story–minus the fame–and I could identify with so much of her experiences. IT was a fun read and gave insight to an interesting person.
A charming, easy read that gives you something to think about.
Pick it up, put it down, and pick it up again.
absolutely hated this book. Besides the start of the book in which she for some reason thinks it’s ok to be so insulting to others and not in a funny way, the stories although self-deprecating to herself about her being fat-it just wasn’t in a way that made you feel interested in her story. I didn’t like the way it was written. I couldn’t figure …
A fun read and listen since I purchased the audio version too. I am old enough to not be familiar with some of the people and programming she talks about but I love her sense of humor and enjoyed the book immensely.
This is a short, funny memoir-ish book – which should not come as a surprise since Ms Kaling is a very successful comedic screenwriter. She writes about growing up in New England, her early career struggles and her breakthrough writing for “The Office”. Her humor is mostly straightforward, mostly (but not entirely) family-friendly and a bit …
Get ready to laugh with Mindy!
