Mechs. Combat. Gritty warriors. What else could you want from military sci-fi? Richard never disappoints.
Hey BookBub readers!
Did you know I run a weekly book club for my fans through my email list? Imagine my surprise when I saw that BookBub recently added this book recommendations feature. Here’s the book rec I sent out last week, a military sci-fi novel I think you may enjoy.

This week’s book is Iron Dragoons by Richard Fox.
Coincidence led me to this military science fiction novel. Some friends on Facebook were talking about it after it came out. I saw their (very positive) impressions, but at first I brushed it off because I was busy. It was one of those books that I would get around to reading…someday.
A few weeks passed. The next time I saw Iron Dragoons was on the list of nominees for the 2017 Dragon Awards.
Huh. That’s something.
Now, the Dragon Awards are interesting—unlike the other big awards (Nebulas, Hugos) where SF authors vote on the winners from among their colleagues, the Dragon Award winners are voted on by the fans. I was excited about the new award and had already decided that I would read as many Dragon-nominated books in 2017 as I could manage (I did five, I think).
Since Iron Dragoons was already on my radar, I figured why not start there?
I was not disappointed. From the prologue, this book is riveting visually, which is a funny thing to say about a book but absolutely true. The story opens on two mechs in a battle on the edge of a volcano’s crater. The action scene that follows is dynamic and frightening in its power, like watching Jackie Chan swing nunchucks, or Chuck Norris kick something heavy.
What makes the book special, however, is the story of what the young naive soldiers have to go through to become mechs.
I’ve rarely been so invested in a character’s transformation. And all this among more incredible action, wise-cracking boot camp humor, and a deeper mystery underlying it all that’s intertwined with religion in a really fascinating way.
No surprise that this novel won the 2017 Dragon Award for best military science fiction novel. Great story, great writing. If you love character-driven war stories, this one’s for you.
Read it, enjoy it, let us know what you thought in the Facebook group.
See you next week with another SFF book.

I have read the entire series and have enjoyed everyone of the novels. They build on each other with enough twists and turns that you are never sure how it is going to end. Great series I hope you enjoy it half as much as I did.Happy reading .
Loved it so much I bought the next book in the series. If you like space battle operas and sci-fi military action you’ll like this book. Good characters, good puzzles and mysteries, and it feels like it could be real!
Good solid military sf.
Wish the book was a bit longer, cut off a little short.
