Weaving a tapestry of fact and fiction, Sara Donati’s epic novel sweeps us into another time and place . . . and into a breathtaking story of love and survival in a land of savage beauty. It is December of 1792. Elizabeth Middleton leaves her comfortable English estate to join her family in a remote New York mountain village. It is a place unlike any she has ever experienced. And she meets a … And she meets a man unlike any she has ever encountered—a white man dressed like a Native American: Nathaniel Bonner, known to the Mohawk people as Between-Two-Lives. Determined to provide schooling for all the children of the village, Elizabeth soon finds herself locked in conflict with the local slave owners as well as with her own family. Interweaving the fate of the Mohawk Nation with the destiny of two lovers, Sara Donati’s compelling novel creates a complex, profound, passionate portait of an emerging America.
Praise for Into the Wilderness
“My favorite kind of book is the sort you live in, rather than read. Into the Wilderness is one of those rare stories that let you breathe the air of another time, and leave your footprints on the snow of a wild, strange place. I can think of no better adventure than to explore the wilderness in the company of such engaging and independent lovers as Elizabeth and her Nathaniel.”—Diana Gabaldon
“Each time you open a book you hope to discover a story that will make your spirit of adventure and romance sing. This book delivers on that promise.”—Amanda Quick
“A beautiful tale of both romance and survival…Here is the beauty as well as the savagery of the wilderness and, at the core of it all, the compelling story of the love of a man and a woman, both for the untamed land and for one another.”—Allan W. Eckert
“Lushly written . . . Exemplary historical fiction.”—Kirkus Reviews
“Epic in scope, emotionally intense.”—BookPage

Enjoyed the book but it was quite wordy. Found myself skimming over the overly descriptive passages about floral and fauna. Liked the story itself.
Good enough to read, but not outstanding. I thought the story was interesting.
Can’t wait to read the rest of this series now. Been a while since someone has written a story that has captured my interest so completely. 30yro spinster decides to take control of her life and to marry whom she chooses rather than the man whom her father would choose to settle a gambling debt. The man she marries is a woodsman & they are nothing alike but choose each other with intention of making a happy marriage. Many will be glad & many will be spiteful wishing them sorrow. These two people will not sit around waiting for others opinions as they are too busy making their own lives work out as they dream it should.
Loved, loved, loved this book and the characters in it. Such a wonderful depiction of Colonial America!
This is one of my favorite books, and all the other books in the series.
A wonderful story weaving in pieces of Last of the Mohicans and Outlander. I couldn’t put it down.
I loved Into the Wilderness!! It’s one of my favorite historical fiction books. I couldn’t read it fast enough. I then read the Into the Wilderness series before I read anything else.
As a huge Diana Gabaldon fan I wanted to read this series for its fictional connection to Outlander. If you love Outlander you’ll love this series. I devoured the entire series and wished there was more. Great characters and love story.
I was surprised by how much I liked this book. It was slow to start, and I wasn’t expecting much, but I ended up appreciating the slow build up and character development. I do like a good romance, and the sex was pretty good, too. Kind of reminded me of Diana Gabaldon’s writing, although nothing could top Outlander!
I like entertaining Historical novels and this is one of the best I have read in a long time. Loved the characters, they came alive, lots of action to keep the story going. Well written and well worth reading.
I really enjoyed it and look forward to the next book in the series.
Hard to put down.
This book, first in the series, details the American frontier using a strong, vibrant female character and builds into a fascinating family story through the next books.
If you are an Outlander fan, Sara Donati’s series starting with Into the Woods is for you. Elizabeth Middleton, the main character, at 29 has set her mind on staying single (or in that era a spinster) and becoming a teacher to the youth in the frontier. She does not want to become the debutante her Aunt wishes. She leaves her Aunt Merriweather’s estate in England to her father’s home in upstate New York to a small town called “Paradise”. On her travels there, she immediately meets Nathaniel Bonner a white man dressed like an Indian. The sparks fly between them and adventures ensue. It is beautifully written adventure and discusses many topics besetting America in the 1790’s (Slavery, Freedom, Education, Women’s independence). It is absolutely a fun read. Enjoy.
This book has everything. I loved it!
Have read, and own, all six in the series.
Great series. I will read again.
The story line is a continuation of “The Last of the Mohicans” with out any disconnects. I have purchased and read all in the series.
If you enjoyed Diana Gabaldon’s Outlander series (& I did, read them more than once) then you will love this book. My husband loved the book too!
I love this book and would recommend to anyone interested in a exciting adventure. I loved the characters and wanted to read more. Hope for more by this writer.
GREAT SERIES!
