James Compton is a man of two worlds. For half the year, he’s Seth’s oldest boy, working with his family and the horses on Compass Ranch. The other half, he’s Jamie, a daring smokejumper on the West Yellowstone Squad. Those two halves make him feel whole, happy, satisfied. Until he meets his boss’s daughter, Ivy… to embark on her career as a large-animal vet. Add in the attention of one very sexy James Compton, and her future should be all sunshine and steamy shared showers. However, a shattering loss in her past ensures Ivy will never date a smokejumper…no matter how perfect for her James may be.
As the couple grows closer, it’s clear they’re headed for a day of reckoning. Ivy can’t lose someone she loves to a raging wildfire, and James may be incapable of giving up a vital part of himself, of living half a life.
When James faces his own loss, the pair are forced to confront their individual demons. What will they willingly let go of…and what will they choose to fight for?

James has spent the last eight yrs as a Smoke-jumper in Yellowstone, loving his job. Then he meets large animal vet Ivy, the bosses daughter, who refuses to date smoke-jumpers. Though she won’t tell him why. He will do whatever it takes to open her up and make her his. The perfect opportunity for alone time, Ivy goes back to Compass Pass with him for Jake’s funeral. I really enjoyed James and Ivy, she’s a tough cookie with attitude and he is the perfect Alpha cowboy. Check out the whole Compass world today!
I’ve read many books, by both of these authors, including all of the other Compass books. You could probably even say I’m a die hard fan.
As with all of the books by both authors, this book is HOT! But the underlying story is filled with drama, hurtful pasts, and a sense of family that is undeniable. This isn’t just a story about falling in love, its a story about growing up, finding yourself, and finding your place within that awesome family. Through copious tears, and the occasional fit of laughter, Jamie and Ivy find each other, resolve some deep dark issues, and find what is truly important in life.
Jamie is a man who, like most of the other Compton men, left home to find his place in the world, to figure out who he was outside of Compton Pass. He finds something that makes him happy, makes him feel useful. Ivy is a woman with a traumatic past, that she hasn’t quite healed from. She’s living her life, moving forward, but still doesn’t seem to be whole.
I love Jamie’s determination, and confidence in how perfect he and Ivy are for each other. He treats her like she is a treasure, while still staying true to who they both really are inside. I love his sense of humor, and how they can laugh together, even during serious situations.
I can’t help but feel empathy for Ivy and how her past affects her. More than once, while reading, I found myself tearing up, because of how raw her feelings are.
This is a beautiful story, an amazing addition to the Compass world. I can’t wait to see what this duo has in store for the next book in the series!
