* A Wall Street Journal, Washington Post, USA Today, and Publishers Weekly Bestseller * “Read the Orphan X series. You’ll thank me later.” –David Baldacci The New York Times bestselling Orphan X returns – just when Evan Smoak thinks he’s done, his deadliest job yet pulls him back Into The Fire… Evan Smoak lives by his own code. Once he was known as Orphan X. Trained as an off-the-books … his own code.
Once he was known as Orphan X. Trained as an off-the-books government assassin and spoken about only in whispers, Evan Smoak was one of the most talented – and most feared – men in the Program. But he broke free and reinvented himself as The Nowhere Man, a figure shrouded in mystery, known for helping the truly desperate.
If anyone is truly desperate, it’s Max Merriweather.
Max is at the end of his rope. His cousin has been brutally murdered, leaving Max an envelope that contains nothing but a mysterious key. However, someone really wants that key, badly enough that Max – and anyone he turns to – is in deadly danger. What seems like a simple job for The Nowhere Man turns out to be anything but. Behind every threat he takes out, a deadlier one emerges and Evan Smoak must put himself in greater danger than ever before as he heads once more Into The Fire.

The Orphan X books just keep getting better and better. As Evan Smoak’s circle of friends and dependents expands, his life becomes more complicated. Each one is a hostage to fortune, and while he’s no longer a lone Orphan, this ramps up the stakes on his missions.
This was a roller-coaster ride of excitement where just when you think Evan’s life can’t become more complicated and dangerous…it is. Characters who are reader favorites return (including the Home Owners’ Association, where Evan is tasked with bringing the nibbles to their meeting–not an assignment the world’s deadliest former assassin is prepared for), as well as more interaction with the snarky, messy teen who’s Robin to his Batman.
I love the Orphan X books and I nearly missed two appointments because all I wanted to do was stay home, keep turning the pages, and find out what happens next. That’s some of the highest praise I can give any author, and I can’t wait until the next adventure.
Into The Fire by Gregg Hurwitz
Another great “Orphan X” Evan Smoak novel! I am a huge fan of this series and after reading the latest installment of this series I must say I am once again waiting for the next book to come out! Evan kicks more ass than anyone else! Thank you Netgalley and St Martin’s Press for this ARC and letting me leave my opinion and thank you Mr. Hurwitz for hours of great reading!
Into the Fire brings a much needed dose of Orphan X back into my life. One of my favorite characters, Evan Smoak is once again using his stealthy assassin skills to save some poor shmuck who is sucked into trouble by his cousin. Max Merriweather is his family’s outcast but when his golden boy cousin Grant is murdered, Max finds himself neck deep in trouble and in need of the Nowhere Man. The beginning was a little slow and a little bit light in the Evan department but once the action started I could not put the story down. Every time the story seemed too pat, along comes another twist and turns the story on its head. I love the redemption angle for both Evan and Max. Orphan X novels will always be a must read for me, I am an Evan fan for life. My voluntary, unbiased review is based upon a review copy from Netgalley.
This is my first foray into the Orphan X world and I am hooked. This is truly a page turning story that will make you set aside anything else you have to do and just keep reading. When X gets a call for help, he once again drops everything and goes to work. Max is way over his head and doesn’t quite understand how his life has taken such a drastic turn. Joey is a delightful character, who gets a new canine sidekick she names a Dog. This story is intense as X gets closer to the top of the pile of bad actors he has to take bigger risks to get rid of them. The characters are unique and bring just the right amount of edginess to the story. The author does a great job of building the scenes and the drama. This is definitely a top notch story that will keep you going back for more.
I have to say I absolutely love this book. Not only because it is one of my favorite genres, but Into the Fire is a completely unique type of story that you don’t often find.
Sometimes when you read black ops espionage type stories they are so packed with action that you can barely breathe. Your heart starts pounding and you are wound up throughout the entire book. The story is so intense you have to read it as fast as possible in case you miss something.
This book, however, had plenty of action but it wasn’t at the type of pace that almost exhausts you. All of the characters are richly enhancing to the story. Hurwitz crafts them with precise, amazing skills and knowledge beyond belief. The detail and description is beyond the typical.
The fact that Evan, the main character, works at protecting others makes the story even more special. This is no run of the mill agent, or past agent, in this case. He is a loner and you have to feel for this guy. His skills are over the top. He is a broken man.
Hurwitz seriously created a damn good story that is loaded with suspense and death defying action which will completely engross you throughout the book. The intricate research done before writing the scenes is evident. Unbelievable and shocking in places. But one you cannot stop reading.
I have never read this series before. Yes, I am sure I have missed some key points with all of the other awesome characters who brought out Evan’s dry humor, sensitivity, big heart, and dare I say, even whispers of love. Oh, I wish I had started with book one. However, I still can go back to the beginning and really get to know Evan, et al. I cannot wait!!!
Hurwitz is an author that has quickly moved to the top of my list!!
This was a great suspense/thriller story. Right from the beginning you jump into the action. Evan who was an orphan and at the age of twelve pick by a government program to be trained with assassin like skills and called
Orphan X. He was able to free himself from the program and decided he would help those in trouble with nowhere to turn and became known as The Nowhere Man. He takes on a mission to help Max Merriweather who was given a thumb drive by his cousin to keep safe should anything happen to him and the next thing he knows his cousin is murdered. Every time Evan takes down what he thinks is the problem another one pops up. He’s hoping this will be the last mission he will do as The Nowhere Man and then he can try and live a normal life but a problem keeps popping up.
This story keeps the suspense going through the whole story and when you think you know who did it you are surprised at the twists that keep coming and the incredible skills Evan has. I would definitely recommend this book.
