There’s going to be trouble. Andy Caplet’s wife goes away, someone is out to get him, and he loses nearly everything in a storm. Amazing both himself and his unhuman friend Inspector Hobbes, he heroically rescues flood victims and uncovers something shocking. Is Andy being set up for blackmail by the apparently charming young woman who attempts to seduce him, or is something even more sinister … something even more sinister afoot? Hobbes certainly believes so, and he’s getting worried.
This is the fourth in Wilkie Martin’s unhuman series of cosy comedy crime fantasies.

I’ve really enjoyed the Hobbes stories. They are a nice break from the more ‘serious’ detective books I like to read, and really strike a balance between interesting stories, humor, and great characters.
Ok, so somehow we manage to have “unhuman” characters, vampires, catastrophic floods and murder yet the feeling I have as I read is more of comfort and whimsy than anything else. Certainly nothing scary here, which is good because I wasn’t in the mood for scary just now. I LOVE Inspector Hobbes and I want all of the other books about him now too!
I love this book series and can’t wait for more
This is a supernatural book with a really good police officer, Inspector Hobbes, as well as an accident prone human, Mr. Andy Caplet. Andy gets in trouble making Hobbes and his dog, Dregs, save him. Andy stays with Hobbes after his house had been destroyed. Andy loves the cooking of Mrs. Goodfellow, the woman who takes care of them all. She is also not a human. Andy is learning to be strong and to save lives. He is also working to helps Hobbes solve crimes. There is a lot of action in this book and a lot of humor.
The puns!
I like it was not all wonder fluff. Characters paid for messing with nature.
I love this series. This is the 4th book in the series, and I really recommend starting with the first 3 books which come as a set. These books really make me giggle. They are loosely based on the Sherlock Holmes, and Watson, but with some real twists. If you like books that play with words, and are looking for something a little different, I highly recommend this entire series.
I have read the whole series, and enjoyed them all. Inspector Hobbes’ world is just a twist off normal, so a reader can slide right in without having to keep too many other concepts in mind. It lets you spend more time focusing on the characters and the zany goings on.
Very entertaining book, great characters, funny,
It is the fourth in the series and I can only hope that it it not the last. This read will surely take you to another place where your worries are surely locked away while you to travel along with the unlikely group of characters. If you enjoyed any of Jasper Fforde’s books, The Big Over Easy, The Fourth Bear, etc, then you will find the Inspector Hobbes books hard to put down. Twists at every corner, unhuman in a new sense, and thoroughly captivating.
There is not full of violence or sex. It is just good story telling.
This book was funny and entertaining. You never knew what Hobbs was going to do next. It was also different from any other books I’ve read. I’ve read all of them. I wish he’d write more.
I had never heard of Wilkie Martin and happened upon this series by chance. Once I read the first one I went searching for any others and have now read them all. Paranormals who really aren’t that much different from us and funny!
I love the characters. Don’t want the book to end.
What a wonderful read. It’s funny entertaining and has just enough dangling bits you have to wonder. Inspector Hobbes is nothing else if not one of a kind. Even the animals are quirky. Watson and Holmes in an alternate universe.
I did something with this book that I very rarely ever do…I didn’t finish it. It was bogged down with too much details and just never grabbed my attention fully. Don’t know if I’ll ever finish it.
I bought the sequel
Amusing and original books!
Love this whole series. Characters are whimsical. Read from the beginning book to truly understand all the puns.
(I haven’t finished it yet) Not entirely sure how to classify this except to say that I keep “putting it down” to read other things before returning to it. I had big hopes and since this installment went on sale, I decided to give this series a chance before investing $$$ to start from the beginning of the series.
