I’m in love with this series and every single story is a magical treat! Moira was an abused girl, tortured by her family, tormented by her wants and desires. Sol was a man, tortured by his past, bound to a vendetta, tormented by his wants and desires. When these two meet, worlds collide, hearts ache, darkness finds a welcome home, and dreams that they didn’t even know to dream really could come true.
She is both his tribulation and his triumph.
But he would only ever be her ruin.
I’ll be honest here and tell you that I had absolutely no idea what fairy tale this was supposed to be retelling and yet… I found in the end it didn’t really matter. Who cares what story inspired this one? Who cares when something so beautiful grew out of something so twisted? Two lovers, obsessed with death and each other. Isn’t that the case for every great romance? The author’s writing is what really captivated me. It was almost poetic and a bit gothic and wove its way through my mind like a tangled vine. So while I couldn’t connect with the characters and found myself disinterested in the plot, I couldn’t stop reading.
If you’re a fan of brilliant writing, lyrical language, falling in love ‘just cuz’, then you’ll enjoy the heck out of this story.
Oh my what better way of retelling this fairytale of Brave than a dark and twisted story. This is the first book by a new arthur for me and boy did she have me flipping pages to see what was happening next and believe me there was plenty to be had.
Moira has been mistreated by her family all her life and has given up hope of ever finding happiness until a stranger comes to town.
Sol has loved her ever since he’d seen her as a lil girl and wants nothing more than to take her away from all the unhappiness in her life, but first he has to take care of her family.
Will they ever find happiness? That’s all I’m saying you’ll just have to one click it and find out and oh yes there’s definitely more to this story and all will be revealed.
3.5 stars
I enjoyed this installment of the Sinister Fairy Tales collection. Not sure if it needs to be said, but I have never seen the movie this book may or may not have based on. (Read the intro Author’s note if you need clarification)
There were a few things that I didn’t love, one being the 3rd person tense, I feel like it hindered my ability to connect with the characters. Also not a fan of the fade to black sexy bits. I’m generally okay with this if it fits the story (as on a historical or clean romance) but for dark reads it didn’t seem right to skip over it.
Things that I did love, were the characters and how true they were to their darkness. Also the bonus chapter after the final author’s note – though I felt this could have just been added as an epilogue so readers don’t miss it.
One thing that I noted throughout, which was neither good or bad and at same time was also both good and bad, was old world setting but in modern times. I’m not sure if this was intentional or just something that my mind created on its own. Similar to the Romeo+Juliet movie from the 90s. I kept thinking the scene was set in a time possibly hundreds of years ago but then it would mention a shower or car or handgun and completely throw me off.
All of that being said, I enjoyed this book and can’t wait for the rest of books in this series!
This was a dark retelling of Brave, now I don’t know the story of Brave because I’ve never watched the film or anything like that so going into this I pretty much had no idea. This was my whole method for the story I was very confused all the way through. I was so confused about whether Moira was in capture by her family or she had free will I was confused about everything. Sol was at least a little bit interesting and mysterious but beyond that I was also confused.
The story was very fast paced and I couldn’t really tell when this was set or where it was set, was it in Spain? Or? I’m just very confused.
I really couldn’t get into this story from the moment I started I was confused all the way through, the plot didn’t grab me I couldn’t connect with any of the characters or even like the characters. I thought the interactions between Sol and Moira was interesting but beyond that I didn’t really care about the characters.
I’m sorry to say that this was a disappointment for me I am hoping the next one is better!
Well, that was darker than I expected! I went in expecting a variation of Brave and I got madness. The writing in this book was fantastic. Cynthia’s words are so poetic and it’s beautiful. If you are expecting a cute story about a Brave girl you will only get one of those things. Sol was dark and Moira was the sun. He tried in vain to hate her, but knew she was his the moment he saw her. He just didn’t expect her to be everything he could have asked for.
I am obsessed with the entire Sinister Fairy Tales series. Cynthia did a great job on this “Brave” remake. It was dark, and twisty, and gave me all the feels!
This is a definite twist on the story of Merida, and Cynthia states that she wouldn’t be sticking close to the story in the beginning, but more of a dark tale of Moira. It is very much that.
The blood thirstiness of Moira and Sol is one that will have you making comparisons to that of the Joker and Harley Quinn. Moira, the only daughter, is hidden away and forced, beaten, broken down to be the dutiful woman who will marry someone who is chosen for her by her family. When chaos rains down on her home, her true side comes out, doing anything to end the torment her life has become, she follows the man who has unknowingly rescued her. Sol will kill for a price, and when this one brings sweet revenge, he indulges till he comes across something he has to have… Moira. When the battle of what he should do clashes with what he wants, the fuse is lit and time is against them both. There is an intense slow burn that builds through the book, and I will say I was sad to not get more of the intimacy when that comes to a head, but it definitely make you feel the burn.
Between the betrayal, murder, and desire, you will get your dark, twisted story all right.
An OK for me read that I’m sure others will love.
I wish I could give this more stars, I truly do, but for me this was just an OK read. Some of that, maybe a fair sized chunk, is due to personal preferences, so please don’t let the 2 stars put you off. I’d also argue that the film it is based on is not a fairy tale, but – semantics!
Insolent is a very atmospheric, mysterious and intriguing read. It took my a little while to realise it was set in the present day, and not some mythical, in the past, fantasy setting. It was twisty with some wonderful dark elements to the story, but for me it was far too much tell and not enough show. At 37% I still had no real idea what was going on, other than Moira was sort of Sol’s captive, and really hadn’t connected to either character. That won’t be an issue, or even noticed, by some readers, since we all look for, and enjoy, different things in our books.
I did dislike that Sol frequently used Spanish phrases that the author made no attempt to translate. OK my kindle allowed me to highlight and find out what it meant – but it totally interrupted the flow of the book.
Whilst I enjoyed what I was reading, and would definitely suggest giving the book (or sample) a try, I was never totally caught up by it. When I put it down, I wasn’t thinking about the book and desperate to pick it back up. But that’s me and there’s no saying you won’t love the book like so many others have.
***3,25 “Unsatisfying in a way!!!” stars***
You know by now, how much obsessed I’ve become with these dark and sinister fairytales…
As a child, i was loving fairytales and as an adult, i still love these stories and even more in their dark and twisted form!!!
The beginning with Venom by Dee Garcia was really impressive and i loved the way she twisted the known story into something dark but sooo beautiful!!!
So, when i heard that “Insolent” was the retelling of Brave, i run to read it!!!!
Unfortunately, the story wasn’t as good as i was imagining it!!!
Yes, the author wrote in the beginning that her story has nothing to do with the original and to be totally honest with you, i was expecting that!!!
But hell, there were many potentions here that the author didn’t took advantage of…
There weren’t any leads that this story was actually Brave except her wild red hair and her triplets siblings!!!! Oh, and Scotland and her love about her bow…
These story didn’t have anything magical inside… Nothing!!! Even though in the original story were plenty inside and i think that this thing had to be a part of this retelling!!!
Phew… Well, this wasn’t a bad story, but it could be a much better story…
Honestly, i don’t know what more to say… I just feel a little bit cheated!!!!
But hell, i love the idea of this project and i can’t wait for the rest of the books and which retellings they represent!!!!
Insolent was a quick but highly intense story! A great addition to the Sinister Fairytale series. Moira was one heckuva heroine. She went through so much, it would break so many people but her resilience was strong and that made her one tough cookie! Even when the Devil comes crashing through her doors she puts up a fight. And he had no way of resisting her tenacity and strength.
Together they were a powerful combination.
Another great story in the Sinister Fairytale Collection. This was a muuuuch darker retelling of Brave. It was amazing. Moira is the only daughter and is to be married off as just a pawn for her family until Sol comes in and slaughters almost her whole family and take her. Her life wasn’t anything fairytale like but with Sol she has a freedom not the most conventional but it’s perfect for her. I loved seeing them fall in love. It had a few twists I didn’t expect and that made it even better. Five stars!

I have read this author before but nothing really sticks out. She is now on my favorite authors list because this book, now I’m following her everywhere. This story was written really well, and the anti-hero was a little darker than usual but that doesn’t bother me really, as long as there’s a HEA at some point, im good. The back-and-forth good between the two main characters. Anti-hero + heroine’s chemistry flowed well. The plot is a bit confusing at first, but overall it is good as every book in this collection, which have all been wonderful.
AMAZING!!!
There is no other word to describe this story and Cynthia’s writing style. I loved the poetry of this story and the way it flowed just like a fairy tale only darker!
I will say it was like a breath of fresh air to read this in third person instead of first. It would have been a completely different story if it was told in first and I might not have connected with it the way I did. (Just a preference.)
Hands down one of faves from this collection. (I mean I love them all, but this one holds a special place in my heart lol).
*First time reading this author
Insolent is not a typical love story. It is a slow burn with many levels of deceit, twists, and mayhem. I had little idea what I was getting into when I started this retelling since I had never watched Brave, so I went in blind. I am sure it had some liking to it with the red hair and bow/arrow, but this story is no childhood story. There are blood and death, darkness, and maybe some love. Moira is a beautiful character that you will root for throughout the whole story.
Insolent is an excellent addition to The Sinister Fairy Tales!
This captivating spin on Brave was a great addition to the Sinister Fairytales collection. I loved the darker tone to Moira and Sol’s story and was quickly drawn into it. Moira was an incredibly resilient and fierce young woman whose tortured soul yearned for more. She found more than she ever hoped for with Sol who was enraptured by the sliver of light she still maintained in spite of all the darkness around her. I absolutely loved how in his own way albeit it a bit twisted Sol sought to protect Moira while giving her the chance to soar. I enjoyed the twists, suspense and tension woven throughout their story that kept me hooked until the very end. After this quick, suspenseful and intriguing spin on Brave I can’t wait to see what’s next in this Sinister Fairytales collection.
Assassin Sol and his target Moira (FMC) meet in an unlikely way when he kills most of her family (Moira kills a few herself because of the abuse she had gotten at their hands). Although Sol seems to have no intention of killing her too. It definitely a different take on a romance story and yeah it’s dark in places especially with the killings but I was struggling not to like these two central characters -Moira and Sol. Overall it was a pretty good read
I love a dark and twisted read that’s full of blood and gore. This unique take on a Brave is full of surprises and not all of them pleasant. Moira came from wealth but she was not happy. She was abused and neglected and very unhappy. Sol was the person to change her life for good but I am not sure if that meant for the better. Sol and Moira take you on quite a ride and it’s not pretty but I enjoyed it a lot!!!!
And once again, I’m left in aw from an author in the Sinister Collection! Cynthia Rodriguez has left me speechless!!
I absolutely adore Brave, and Cynthia freaking takes it and turns it into something evil, and dark that I fell in love with! Moira and Sol are absolute perfection! Moira character grows and becomes stronger as we read and I love watching her grow. Sol goes from being the villian to someone I just loved!
I had no idea the rollercoaster that I signed up for when I started this book, and I never would have guessed what was going to be inside these pages. Moira’s life is absolutely tragic and my heart hurts for her. Sol is an assassin, and let’s face it we all the love assholes.
Rodriguez delivers a phenomenal addition to the Sinister Fariytale Collection. Insolent had everything I could want, violence, revenge, hot romance, and dark! This book is so damn dark!! All the sinister stars for Rodriguez and Insolents. I cannot wait to see what this collection gives us next.
I like this dark spin of Brave story, this is book number four from the Sinister Fairy Tale Collection, but my first read, I love dark stories and retelling the story of Brave, we get Moira, who has been locked away all her life, now their parents want to auction her to the highest bidder. Then something happens and she finds herself away from it all, but she finds herself in another prison, one where her feelings for her captor will be involved, Will Sol will either save her or be her demise.
Insolent (Sinister Fairy Tales Series) by Cynthia A. Rodriguez is a very dark twist on Brave; the story about the princess Merida aka Moira in this story. Moira is emotional and physically abused not only by her mother but her younger brothers. The king her father is cold and uncaring to her years of abuse. One day Moira while out supposedly practicing her bow and arrow she comes across a dark figure who personifies death himself. She is intrigued by his presence. When Moira finds her family and friends slaughtered and she being held captive by death, she is feeling freer than she ever has. The dynamics between death aka Sol and Moira feeds the dark side to her very soul. Sol’s job was to kill her but the fire in her eyes speak to him. I was drawn in by their story of a sick and twisted relationship. Truly enjoyed this story. Gritty as well as sexy. This was my first time reading this author. I do like the way she tells a story and look forward to reading something by her again. 4 stars for me.
