Now the inspiration for the CBS Television drama, “The Unit.” Delta Force. They are the U.S. Army’s most elite top-secret strike force. They dominate the modern battlefield, but you won’t hear about their heroics on CNN. No headlines can reveal their top-secret missions, and no book has ever taken readers inside—until now. Here, a founding member of Delta Force takes us behind the veil of … behind the veil of secrecy and into the action-to reveal the never-before-told story of 1st Special Forces Operational Detachment-D (Delta Force).
He is a master of espionage, trained to take on hijackers, terrorists, hostage takers, and enemy armies. He can deploy by parachute or arrive by commercial aircraft. Survive alone in hostile cities. Speak foreign languages fluently. Strike at enemy targets with stunning swiftness and extraordinary teamwork. He is the ultimate modern warrior: the Delta Force Operator.
In this dramatic behind-the-scenes chronicle, Eric Haney, one of the founding members of Delta Force, takes us inside this legendary counterterrorist unit. Here, for the first time, are details of the grueling selection process—designed to break the strongest of men—that singles out the best of the best: the Delta Force Operator.
With heart-stopping immediacy, Haney tells what it’s really like to enter a hostage-held airplane. And from his days in Beirut, Haney tells an unforgettable tale of bodyguards and bombs, of a day-to-day life of madness and beauty, and of how he and a teammate are called on to kill two gunmen targeting U.S. Marines at the Beirut airport. As part of the team sent to rescue American hostages in Tehran, Haney offers a first-person description of that failed mission that is a chilling, compelling account of a bold maneuver undone by chance—and a few fatal mistakes.
From fighting guerrilla warfare in Honduras to rescuing missionaries in Sudan and leading the way onto the island of Grenada, Eric Haney captures the daring and discipline that distinguish the men of Delta Force. Inside Delta Force brings honor to these singular men while it puts us in the middle of action that is sudden, frightening, and nonstop around the world.

As a former member of Special Forces I found this book very realistic and insightful. I think the way the narrative comes full circle in the end, with the left hand fighting the right hand, is the sad truth of the world of covert operations.
If you want the real deal, this book is it. I’d also recommend The Commandos which covers the training of …
Great book
Loved it! I think all police officers should undergo the intensive training as haney speaks of in this book. These unit operators train so hard to become sharp shooters they would never shoot a civilian intentionally or even by accident in the back or while running away with nothing in their hands that could be perceived as a weapon, or even if …
Eye opening regarding the work of unsung heroes.
Factual…..
Husband read this book in two sittings and he never reads!!!
I thought this was both informational and interesting. Great book to get an inside look at our elite forces.
Very good history of the authors time as a member of Delta Force. Make you more appreciative of their sacrifices and job.
Pretty darn good. If you have read any other books like this, about Navy Seal selection, Green Berets, etc., this has a lot in common with them. ‘Selection’, the weeding-out process of getting into Delta Force, is an important part of the book, and is related in detail. This is probably the best example of that kind of writing. One thing that …
This is a great book on the early years of the unit.
Worth a read to be better informed about these heroes
A page-turner indeed! It brought an in depth and personal look beyond the headlines of events from the late 70’s, 80’s, and 90’s. It made me proud that we had men of such skill and valor and sad that we still need people like that today–and all too often in the same places.
Insightful
Excellent book. Author provided amazing depiction of the intensity of training for Delta Force and real world events that occurred afterwards. He is true war hero and more than appreciate his service to our country. I saw that the book was redacted but that does not belittle the appreciation of the story. It just makes me want to be a fly on the …
Having served in the 8th Special Forces in Central/South America chasing communist guerillas, long before there was a Delta Force, this book gives a fairly acc urate picture of the rigors of training. It mostly captures that indefinable esprit de corps that binds warriors together — much more than the regular armed services. These men live or …
An eye opener As to what a person can overcome in military training and deployment
A great reference for anyone wanting to learn more about this elite group of soldiers. I read it twice!
