In this explosive psychological thriller by New York Times bestselling author Lisa Unger, a young woman’s mysterious gift lands her in the middle of a dangerous investigation of a little girl’s disappearance. For as long as she can remember, twenty-year-old Finley Montgomery has been able to see into the future: dream about things before they happen, see beyond the physical world, and … world, and unconsciously make supernatural things happen. But Finley can’t control these powers, and moves to The Hollows to live with her grandmother, a renowned seer who can help Finely understand and master her gifts. But once in The Hollows, Finley’s gift proves to be both a blessing and a curse.
Like Finley, Merri and Wolf Montgomery are in the worst possible hell. Their daughter Abbey has been missing for ten months. Leads exhausted, the police have all but given up hope; but Merri is unable to shake the feeling that time is running out, and makes a desperate, last ditch effort to locate her daughter.
Finley and Merri are on winding, treacherous paths towards the same point. When they finally come together in The Hollows, nothing is as it seems. But one thing is clear: The Hollows always gets what it wants.

I really enjoyed this paranormal touch to solve the mystery.
Have you ever had a talent or gift you didn’t want? You just want to give it back and say, “No thank you”? The main character in Ink and Bone is dealing with this big time. She’s psychic and how can you not acknowledge a gift of that magnitude when it is sure to help others? Ethically, morally, it’s the right thing to do like it or not. And if this supernatural stuff is going to happen to you anyway, you might as well put it to good use.
Ink and Bone was the first book I’ve read from Lisa Unger. Overall, I liked it. It starts off with a horrific crime that leaves you waiting for (and desperately needing) closure. But Ink and Bone is more about psychic Finley Montgomery’s character than it is the mystery. That doesn’t mean there isn’t a mystery/thriller/somewhat horror component – there certainly is, it’s just very character centered which isn’t a bad thing, especially when you like said character, which I did 🙂
My favorite quote:
“We almost never feel ready for any of life’s passages, and often we must move through them all the same.”
After reading the synopsis for this book, no way was I not reading it.
A father and son shot, left wounded in the Hollows while the daughter, Abbey, is dragged away by her abductor.
A young woman, haunted by dreams and ghosts, paints her body with tattoos, slowly losing control of her gifts.
The Hollows, buried in winter snow, not giving up it’s secrets.
A mother struggling to stay sane, makes a last desperate attempt to find her daughter.
I enjoy it when a story pulls me in right from the beginning and the author did just that. I lost track of things going on around me and kept reading …. kept reading, until I was done.
The character’s are strongly developed and drive the story, and the plot is busy and exhilarating, reminding me of a dangerous winding road. You race around each bend, never knowing what waits in the road to send the story out of control.
A real page turner for anyone looking for a thriller with some suspense and horror, plus a bit of the paranormal thrown in.
I couldn’t put this book down–stayed up way too late one night to finish it. It’s so well-written and well done. it’s like a primer for how suspense fiction should be written. LOVED this book.
I love every book set in The Hollows, and Ink and Bone is no exception! Finley Montgomery has a special gift. She dreams of things before they happen. This gift is a blessing and a curse and there’s only one person who can help: her grandmother Eloise, who is a renowned seer.
But then Finley starts seeing a young girl who’s been missing for more than 10 months and quickly gets caught up in the case with Detective Jones Cooper.
I loved the paranormal elements in this thriller and felt they really amped up the atmosphere. Full of dark secrets and surprising twists, this is an evocative, absolutely ingenious thriller that was a real delight to read.
So far my favorite read of 2016!! This is the kind of book that got me back into reading many years ago.
Finley is just trying to find her place in the world but she’s not like other girls….she sees things that other people don’t. And after a family’s worst nightmare comes to life while on vacation and their daughter Abbey is abducted she really starts to realize how different she is. Following her visions into the dark and dangerous woods in order to learn a horrible truth….there really are monsters lurking in the shadows
So much mystery and intrigue!! Never a dull moment and seriously, a new twist and turn around every corner. Definitely an edge of your seat book that will have you questioning your beliefs in what is possible. I will definitely be checking out more books by Lisa Unger!!
Excellently written
The paranormal aspect and the plot of the missing girl fascinated me. A young woman with the gift of vision teams up with a private detective to search for a missing child. The child was abducted while hiking with her father and brother. The story alternates between psychic visions, the desperation of the missing girl’s mother, and the environment of the kidnappers and their victims. It was often confusing for me to follow what the author was trying to portray with the vision aspects, so for that reason, the story didn’t click for me as much as I’d hoped.
I enjoyed the perspective of the medium granddaughter. it gave it a nice twist. You wont see this ending coming!
Pulled me in and I didn’t want it to end. The ending was a little disappointing but it was still a wonderfully written book. I will definitely be reading more of her books in the near future I hope.
This book was so many things! It was terrifying, heartbreaking, and haunting. Finley had so much to deal with between choosing to help the spirits or help herself. This author did not hold back on how depraved some individuals truly are. I was laughing, crying and cheering by the end of the book.
I really liked the beginning, but struggled through about the last third of the book. The book received a lot of great reviews and really sounded interesting….so maybe I just wasn’t in the mood at the time I read it.
