With the second book in the Pirate Queen series, Maeve returns to Ireland, and Paul, to complete the mission Grace O’Malley has given her. Steeped in more Irish history, we learn the tragedy of the Tuam babies, the strength of Brehon law, and the lengths some will go to out of greed to finish things that were started centuries ago. As Grace’s mission nears completion, so to does the history of Clan O’Malley, putting a massive weight of responsibility on Maeve’s shoulders
There is so much mystical, Druid influenced, aspects to this second book that my heart started racing, both from fear and adrenaline, as I read. Creepy Fergal returns and his true identity is revealed, along with the source of his pungent body odor and odd tattoo. Rory has accepted his role as leader of Clan McMahon but still holds Maeve inexplicably under his sway.
The character development and arcs for the main characters are very well done, as they are for the secondary characters as well. The tertiary characters still leave a bit to be desired in this book, especially as they become more involved in the plot.
Normally, I’d turn to another genre after finishing a book, but this story is so compelling that I’m continuing on with the prequel to the series as well as the conclusion. The regency and modern romances in my TBR pile will have to wait.
(Cannot be read as a standalone.)
I’m still hooked on this series, but I didn’t really enjoy the beginning of this 2nd book. It just skips and rushes important events that occurred in Boston, and then it jumps back to Ireland.
Although I’m not a big fan of the way things started out, the romance between the characters is still addicting.
Inish Clare makes the mystery from the previous book more clear, but reveals the drama between the clans residing in Ireland. I’m ready for book #3!
Inish Clare is a thrilling and often intense continuation of Bohermore. I did not expect the immediate sense of foreboding that was achieved in the first chapter and continued until the end. Paul was steadfast and true in his love for Maeve, while Maeve was steadfast and true to her devotion to the Pirate Queen. Maeve’s emotions concerning Rory were frustrating for me to read through, but by the end I believed this was intentional (now I’m obsessing over book 3). There is some finality achieved concerning the Pirate Queen, but disturbing new and old threats are exposed. Mrs. McMahon does an excellent job of writing the perfect characters and telling the perfect story. I would read about Maeve and the other characters without this storyline and I would read this storyline without these characters, if that makes sense.
Inish Claire is a wonderful addition to the Pirate Queen series. I got to the end of this book and all I could think is “I want more.” I loved reading about the new adventures Maeve has as she travels around Ireland looking for clues to complete her mission. Faced with rival clans and a deadly ghost Maeve is unyielding in her quest to bring peace to the Pirate Queen’s soul and reclaim lands stolen from her clan. Only then can balance start to be restored. As dangers become apparent friendships are tested. Maeve finds herself questioning who she can trust with the valuable information she holds and with her heart.
