A poignant breakout novel, for fans of J. Courtney Sullivan and Elin Hilderbrand, about a single mother who inherits a beautiful beach house with a caveat—she must take care of the ornery elderly woman who lives in it.For years, Maggie Sheets has been an invisible hand in the glittering homes of wealthy New York City clients, scrubbing, dusting, mopping, and doing all she can to keep her head … scrubbing, dusting, mopping, and doing all she can to keep her head above water as a single mother. Everything changes when a former employer dies leaving Maggie a staggering inheritance. A house in Sag Harbor. The catch? It comes with an inhabitant: The deceased’s eighty-two-year old mother Edith.
Edith has Alzheimer’s—or so the doctors tell her—but she remembers exactly how her daughter Liza could light up a room, or bring dark clouds in her wake. And now Liza’s gone, by her own hand, and Edith has been left—like a chaise or strand of pearls—to a poorly dressed young woman with a toddler in tow.
Maggie and Edith are both certain this arrangement will be an utter disaster. But as summer days wane, a tenuous bond forms, and Edith, who feels the urgency of her diagnosis, shares a secret that she’s held close for five decades, launching Maggie on a mission that might just lead them each to what they are looking for.

A light read, but sometimes what we all want. Enjoyable, amusing characters.
Interesting. Not the USUAL. GOODCHARACTERS
I really liked this book, but felt like the story wasn’t finished. Maybe there will be a sequel?
Inheriting a house that is the answer to a struggling single mother’s prayer, but it comes with a price. The mother of her benefactor, who is recently diagnosed with Alzheimers. It’s a wonderful book. Very true to life and worth every page !
Excellent writer, well-crafted. Exceptionally interesting characters who meet unexpected challenges and eventually–realistically–come to know themselves for who they are.
Informative on Alzheimer’s but not maudlin.
Great story especially for anyone with a person in their life struggling with Alzheimer’s and their family and caregivers.
Loved this book. I read this as a selection for my book club. Very insightful, great characters and it makes you think about your future.
Inheriting Edith Interesting characters – believable storyline
I loved this book. I am so tired of the depressingly sad dementia alzheimers books and movies. I found this book honest in dealing with this sensitive issue. It was great to see Edith able to write out her life and memories. But, it was also unrealistic with the financial inheritance, a house etc for a friend.
This book was interesting to find out
all the characters back stories and then see how they fit into their current problems/situations. But it ended much to soon. Edith was just starting to get worse and I wanted to see how this would progress all the characters. Also wanted to see Maggie find true love.
I could not put this book down. I’ve tecommended it to others. And I didn’t want it to end! The characters and story line were real – I felt like I was there watching everything unfold. I will be looking for more by this author.
I found it sad but in a good way. Edith is such a lovely character and I felt her pain. I wish the book was longer.
I actually really enjoyed reading this book
A quick read and enjoyable. Some life lessons to be learned.
It was an okay read, but was kind of sad and just didn’t really go anywhere.
I thought this was a wonderful book.
Loved the book. The ending could have been bettet
I loved how the characters came together and made a sweet little family!
Interesting read.
