A medical mistake during an IVF procedure. An unthinkable situation . . . you’re pregnant with the wrong baby. You can terminate, but you can’t keep him. What choice would you make?Carolyn and Sean Savage had been trying to expand their family for years. When they underwent an IVF transfer in February 2009, they knew it would be their last chance. If they became pregnant, they would celebrate the … celebrate the baby as an answer to their prayers. If not, they would be grateful for the family they had and leave their fertility struggles behind forever.
They never imagined a third option. The pregnancy test was positive, but the clinic had transferred the wrong embryos. Carolyn was pregnant with someone else’s baby.
The Savages faced a series of heartbreaking decisions: terminate the pregnancy, sue for custody, or hand over the infant to his genetic parents upon delivery. Knowing that Carolyn was carrying another couple’s hope for a baby, the Savages wanted to do what they prayed the other family would do for them if the situation was reversed. Sean and Carolyn Savage decided to give the ultimate gift, the gift of life, to a family they didn’t know, no strings attached.
Inconceivable provides an inside look at how modern medicine, which creates miracles daily, could allow such a tragic mistake, and the many legal ramifications that ensued with both the genetic family and the clinic. Chronicling their tumultuous pregnancy and its aftermath, which tested the Savage’s faith, their relationship to their church, and their marriage, Inconceivable is ultimately a testament to love. Carolyn and Sean loved this baby, making it impossible for them to imagine how they could give him life and then give him away.
In the end, Inconceivable is a story of what it is to be a parent, someone who nurtures a life, protects a soul, only to release that child into the world long before you’re ready to let him go.

I can’t imagine having to go through what this couple went through. Great book. Emotional at times.
An emotional story of what goes wrong when a 40 year old woman uses IVF and finds herself pregnant. Her happiness is shattered when she receives a call from the fertility center telling her she was impregnanted with another couple’s baby.
Inspiring!
As someone who has suffered with infertility, this cautionary tale of a courageous family dealing with an unbelievable medical mistake was riviting. I had to go find out the “rest of the story”. God Bless the Savages
This is a true story, written by the two people who had to suffer through a mistake which caused them to carry a pregnancy and then give the baby to another couple.
It is well written and a cautionary tale.
I just didn’t like the fact that the authors seemed intent on declaring what good people they were.
A very thought provoking book.
Heartbreaking, don’t know if I could have been as open and inclusive to they other couple as they were. It was a wonderful book
I have a son and daughter-in-law going through IVF at this time. I tried to put myself in the shoes of both the biological parents and the author of this book. I realalize that there was heartbreak on the part of the author as well as the result of all the hormones which would be affecting her emotions. Because of those emotions I tried to make …
The book explored the emotional roller-coaster of a situation few will ever face, and the ethics and moral issues of a unique situation. At times I felt that there was quite a bit of redundancy in going over the emotional response again and again. Like, I get it already. But overall, it was a book I could not put down.
Could not put this down had to keep reading till finished
I thought it interesting, but too emotional on the authors part. I found it telling that the mother resented being thought of as a surrogate, and resented having to give the baby boy up but felt fine about having a surrogate for her eggs.
Di read the book thr without stopping. Many tears were shed.
I really enjoyed this book. It was a heart wrenching story. I had such sympathy for this couple and the tragic circumstances of their IVF.
This book was wonderfully written. I enjoyed it immensely.
I thought the book was very well written. Having had fertility myself in the past I am surprised this type of mistake doesn’t happen more often.
Some of my grandchildren were the result of embryos fertilized outside the womb so this book was especially poignant for me. Excellent read!
Chronicles the events causing serious emotional harm to a couple desiring to have their frozen embryo implanted. Written with great attention to detail of the emotions of the participants.
