A classic, thrilling Dirk Pitt adventure from a master of the genre!
Nearly five centuries ago a fleet of boats landed mysteriously on an island in an inland sea. There, an ancient Andean people hid a golden hoard greater than that of any pharaoh, then they and their treasure vanished into history—until now.
In 1998, in the Andes Mountains of Peru, Dirk Pitt dives into an ancient sacrificial … ancient sacrificial pool, saving two American archaeologists from certain drowning. But his death-defying rescue is only the beginning, as it draws the intrepid Pitt into a vortex of darkness and danger, corruption and betrayal. A sinister crime syndicate has traced the long-lost treasure—worth almost a billion dollars—from the Andes to the banks of a hidden underground river flowing beneath a Mexican desert. Driven by burning greed and a ruthless bloodlust, the syndicate is racing to seize the golden prize…and to terminate the one man who can stop them.

I think he only knows how to write excellant books.
I am a Clive Cussler fan! Love his characters, read all his series, historical as well as adventure. All are great stories! This was one of the first ones I read and it helped me get hooked on his wonderful books. Try one you will love it! He does start out with a chapter about an historical incident that is the basis for the story. Very well written, lots of description.
I absolutely love ANYthing that Clive Cussler writes! He is a prolific writer, but even so his characters are different from each other so it doesn’t read as if they are produced with a cookie cutter. The derring-do adventures are realistic but with a twist. I love following the adventures of Dirk and Joe, the folks on the Oregon and especially their leader – Juan Cabrillo – who is an amputee like me, and all the other heroes and heroines of Mr. Cussler’s novels. I am constantly recommending his books to people.
Clive Cussler is always a good read.
Nonstop
As another diver, this book offered everything I am interested in.
Like any Clive Cussler novel, this work can be a bit overly descriptive, but yet it is still a great read. It is action packed with excellent use of plot and exotic background to include cenotes and subterranean waterways crisscrossing under the Yucatan Peninsula allowing for intriguing action between the novel’s characters.
Good action adventure for escapist reading. Formulaic
Another classic from Cussler. Early Dirk Pitt adventure about treasure in Peru and the usual impossible situations Dirk and Al get into. Great reads.
Great adventure.
I’ve been reading Cussler for years and never been disappointed. Always been a big fan of history affecting today, and Cussler does that as well or better than anyone writing today.
This was the first Clive Cussler book that I read, and I have been hooked ever since.
A great read
I have loved every one of the Dirk Pitt adventures and this was no exception. Great story with lots of action around the world. Loved it!
Typical Clussler. Action with logical, predictable outcomes.Sometimes a little too detailed
On the the great action, thriller writers of our time. Going to miss new stories from Clive.
Have never read a Clive Cussler book (and I have read them all) that I would give less than 5 stars.
Clive Cussler at his best it is just a bŕillent.
Clive Cussler always provides a great adventure.
