As dusk approaches a small Dublin suburb in the summer of 1984, mothers begin to call their children home. But on this warm evening, three children do not return from the dark and silent woods. When the police arrive, they find only one of the children gripping a tree trunk in terror, wearing blood-filled sneakers, and unable to recall a single detail of the previous hours.
Twenty years later, … years later, the found boy, Rob Ryan, is a detective on the Dublin Murder Squad and keeps his past a secret. But when a twelve-year-old girl is found murdered in the same woods, he and Detective Cassie Maddox—his partner and closest friend—find themselves investigating a case chillingly similar to the previous unsolved mystery. Now, with only snippets of long-buried memories to guide him, Ryan has the chance to uncover both the mystery of the case before him and that of his own shadowy past.
Richly atmospheric, stunning in its complexity, and utterly convincing and surprising to the end, In the Woods is sure to enthrall fans of Mystic River and The Lovely Bones. And look for French’s new mystery, Broken Harbor, for more of the Dublin Murder Squad.

The best book I’ve read in a long time. Excellent character development and plot creativity. Descriptions of the village and surrounding area are so vivid. I’ve already bought Tana French’s 2nd and 3rd books. Looking forward to them.
I literally could not finish this book. I tried to read it 3 different times and could not get into it. The dialog was horrible and the book just did not flow. There are very few books that I am unable to finish and this is one of them
Finished a while back. First book read by tana French and loved the story line and characters never a dull moment keeps you intrigued Loved all her books so far just can’t get witch elm ?
This book was boring. It took me forever to read.
Hated the ending and the rest of the book didn’t redeem it.
לא אהבתי את הספר. מתחיל מבטיח ומותח ומסתיים בקול ענות חלושה
Tana French has yet to write a bad book. She is on my “Whatever She Writes, I’ll read list”. The authors I would group her with , in terms of wit, insight, twisting and thought provoking plots, indelible characters, are Sophie Hannah, Kate Atkinson, Nicci French, and Stuart MacBride.
Read this and everything else she’s written.
While looking for a new author for our Mystery Book Club, someone told me about Tana French. If an author has developed a series, we usually start with number one, to see how the characters develop with time. For a first novel, Tana French hit it out of the park. I really didn’t want to stop reading!
Tanya French is a very good writer I have enjoyed all of her books!
Loved it. Got me started reading Tana French.
good character development
Wonderfully written. Original story and great narrative. She really develops the characters and the plot. Couldn’t put it down!
Love her books!
Very good book
One of the best contemporary mystery writers around. Really digs into the makeup of her characters. Have read all of her books and have yet to be disappointed.
I have read several of Tana French’s novel. I love the characters. The writing naturally flows. Definitely a page turner. I never want to put the book down until I finish it.
I liked the story but wasnt fond of how it ended. It just seemed to leave some questions unanswered. Still worth the read though.
This is Tana French’s first book in her series of six set in the Murder Squad in Dublin. I think this was her best, though I have enjoyed all the others also. Each sequential book has as its narrator one of the detectives who had been mentioned in the background of the previous book. I have to admit that as I got into this author I approached some …
unhappy with the ending. would have liked to know what happened to the main character when he was young.
Good story but disappointed with the outcome.
