“The perfect blend of soul-crushing angst, laugh out loud wit, and heart-melting romance.” – Helena Hunting, New York Times and USA Today Bestselling Author. From #1 Amazon Bestseller L.J. Shen comes a new, star-crossed lovers romance about loss, love, and meeting The One when you are too young to know how to keep them.Sometimes you meet people who are out of this world, so you make them a part of … this world, so you make them a part of yours.
A one-night stand born from vengeance in a foreign land.
An explosive chemistry neither of us could deny.
We signed a contract on the back of a Boar’s Head Pub napkin that said if we ever met again, we would drop everything and be together.
Eight years and thousands of miles later, he’s here.
In New York.
And he’s America’s music obsession.
The intangible Irish poet who brings record executives to their knees.
The blizzard in my perfect, unshaken snow globe.
Last time we spoke, he was a beggar with no intention of becoming a king.
But a king he became, and now I’m his servant.
I’m not the same broken princess Malachy Doherty put back together with his callused hands.
I have a career I love.
A boyfriend I adore.
An apartment, a roommate, a life.
I changed. He changed, too.
But Mal kept the napkin.
Question is, will I keep my word?

When some readers hear the word ‘different’ or ‘unique’ when it comes to a a favorite author’s new release, they worry or question why the tried and true storytelling and writing methods used needed to change. But for other readers, like me, who love to see writers grow in their craft, stepping outside of their comfort zone or venturing beyond what they’re ‘known’ for is exactly what makes an author become one of my favorites…one of my unicorns. It’s that versatility as a curator of words that makes a lasting impression, and it’s their own need to adjust and change as the book world ebbs and flows that allows them to remain at the top of this business – one that seems to always be recreating itself based on the needs and desires of this community of readers and because that is, assuredly, who writers share their worlds and their characters with, it makes sense that authors either change with the times or find themselves on the outside looking in.
It’s beyond clear that LJ Shen is adored by her readers/her fans, and it’s because she has proven herself time and time again with every new release and with the characters she creates and the story lines that she crafts that she has the pulse of her readership and that she refuses to be pigeon-holed based on her previous books and/or the tropes and the drama that seem to accompanying them. And that idea shines true in ITUE.
In the Unlikely Event may not have all of the same components of Shen’s past best sellers, but it still exudes every facet of who Shen is as a writer and storyteller, meaning that it still reads like a LJ Shen story even if it’s in a category all on its own. And it’s the uniqueness of Mal and Rory’s story
that kept me captivated, that had every single one of my emotions on high alert, given the amount of lies told and secrets withheld and the quest for revenge that seemed to be the driving force for many of the characters inside the pages of this story.
The multiple perspectives provided and the unique use of letters and notes that shed further light on the past as well as the present-day circumstances and situations allow readers to fully immerse themselves into Mal and Rory’s mess of missed chances, stolen opportunities, false perceptions, and malicious words and deeds. My head was spinning for a majority of the book because of how everything played out and the people responsible for the hero and heroine not finding their way back to each other until 8 years later, and even after that, it’s still a struggle for them due to where their lives sent them and who they surrounded themselves with all that time.
My frustrations with quite a few of the secondary characters as well as the hero and heroine themselves definitely played a role in how I viewed all of them and what I wanted to see happen, and while things didn’t quite go the way I expected or even wanted to, in some ways, the path that Shen took these characters on as well as her readers was based on a pact that was created during Mal and Rory’s initial meeting, but could not be fully realized until everything was out in the open and the past was, once and for all, laid to rest.
ITUE is a story that will stay with me regardless of how many other LJ Shen books I read, which proves that Shen’s ‘different’ is find by me!!
4.5 Poison Apples
I feel like L.J. Shen just Pen-Warded me.
I recently said that Penelope Ward puts me through the wringer, and my Ativan prescription gets a work out reading her books. I am highly dread-filled, a true worrywart, I don’t trust authors to give me HEA even when they promise it.
L.J. Shen nearly crippled me for a good portion of In the Unlikely Event.
Young love is a mixture of hormones and inexperience. I’m old; you will have to take my word for it. Rory Jenkins is full of the dewy awakenings of adulthood, not ready to reconcile the death of the dad she never got to meet or know beyond letters. Fresh from high school graduation, she goes AWOL to Dublin to at least see where her kin live. What she finds is a warning about homicidal gray squirrels, a sexy Boheme poet, and a cold welcome that lets her know that Tolka, Ireland is not for her.
Although she stays in Dublin and Tolka only one day and night, it’s long enough for her to realize that the poet who best knew her father is quickly and infinitely dear to her heart, but doomed to break it. Fate has given her a brief few stolen hours with Malachy Doherty. Upon their farewell, the troubadour, and drinky romantic, pens out a vow that in the unlikely event the two lovers should meet again, they will forego all else and claim one another for a lifetime of sublime moments like those that they discovered in Tolka.
It’s the Rory and Mal pre-marriage-proposal proposal written upon a napkin and signed next to a ketchup stain.
An admission that their youthful love will remain pure and will never dim nor die regardless of distance and time
It’s the promise that L.J. Shen was giving me that everything would be alright if I just hung in there.
But humans, both fictional and in reality, exhaust me, and these two lovers in cahoots with their creator were only issuing me a threat that my soul, heart, and nerves would not survive the wreckage that the plot and narrative would surely serve.
And L.J. Shen wrecked me.
She plays the devil with Rory and Mal’s hearts and lives. It’s Shakespearean in its level of tragedy. The wind up is intense, the transition felt rushed, but the reveals along the way were K.O.s that effed me up once and again.
The POV swaps throughout the book from Mal and Rory so you can see the emotional state of both. The story has cute little vignettes between chapters that are ‘notes’ from other characters to readers, giving us peeks into all the shadows and actors that impact the narrative. Although this unique exposition-packed vehicle of confessions has the potential to blowout the story, it doesn’t — the push and pull between all the characters works. The slow-rolling rediscovery of their metaphysical love opens up the world L.J. Shen builds in In The Unlikely Event.
Bravo! You figuratively kicked my dog into the street and made sure it was only struck by lightning rather than traffic.
Now that is ironic.
I loved this book.
I recommend it.
—and It is an excellent read for anyone who enjoys Penelope Ward too.

LJ Magic
In the Unlikely Event by L J Shen is a beautiful read. I’m not sure how many times I put it down, how many times I cringed or screamed in my head, but I prevailed and finished. In truth it’s a great book, full of emotion, the magic of love and the blessing of fate. It’s harsh, gritty, sad but so, so, so enjoyable. It’s witty, the characters so realistic in their hopes, dreams and failures and their love is just destined. Sigh. Totally 5 star worthy.
In the Unlikely Event is a book like no other. You do not only read this book, you experience it. The talented L.J. Shen blew me away with her compelling writing. The love I have for this book is indescribable. It is packed with so much love, angst, passion, heartbreak, forgiveness and second chances. It is one of the most unique and creative love stories I have ever read, and I devoured it. The minute I started it I could not put it down. When you pick up this book, be ready to forgo all responsibilities because it will capture you and not let you go.
The book is set in Tolka, Ireland, a small town near Dublin. Having Irish roots I have always connected to books set in Ireland and I knew I’d fall in love with this little town and community right from the beginning.
The book is one incredible roller coaster ride. You will feel so much, experience all the highs and lows right alongside these characters. With all the secrets and lies, there is a ton of angst and your heart will ache but it will also melt, and swoon, and sigh and laugh. The emotion you feel, is a high you will never want to come down from.
Aurora (Rory)
Rory is a super sassy, sweet young woman. She has a huge heart and is incredibly protective of those she loves. She is passionate and creative, and has a real eye for the beauty of photography.
“Mal makes me burn. Crackle. Melt. My love for him is thick and sturdy. Metallic and alive. A beating organ, co-existing with my heart.”
Malachy (Mal)
Mal is this beautiful, incredibly talented Irish writer/poet. He is sexy, confident and extremely charming. The moment he falls for Rory all bets are off and the passion and love he has for her is evident immediately.
“You’re the four seasons, Rory. And I promise to be your shelter in the winter. To bask in you in the summer. To crash into love with you in the spring like it’s the first time we’ve met. And when you fall? I promise to always pick you up.”
5 stars is not enough! I loved this so much and these characters are ones I will not forgot for a very long time. Thank you Social Butterfly PR & L.J. Shen for generously providing me with an advanced reader copy in exchange of an honest review.
Perfection
This author is one that I will add to my TBR and my calendar regardless of whether it even has a title or blurb. Case and point, for the longest time this was just known as ITUE. Once the title was announced and the blurb it became, even more, real and went from a want to read to a NEED to read. And now after having read it, I can say without a doubt that not only was it everything that I had come to expect from this author but it most assuredly will need to be read again because it is so very different than just about everything I have read including but not limited to anything that she has done before.
There is just something about the way that this author writes. Her characters are unique, the cadence and style that she uses are always different and meaningful. Her world-building and stylistic choices always make me posit what is going on in her head as to why she chooses to do it the way that she does. This stylistic choice is really apparent in this book. Trust me when I say this because this book is told from several different points of view. SEVERAL. Yet, I say this not in a disparaging way. It worked. Would it have worked for other authors? NO. Trust me on that (I will just say that #bestdayever has a new meaning). Yet, this author made me a believer. She made me laugh several times, hell, she made even rethink my stance on how much I detest chocolate. Seriously, I detest chocolate but not in an LJ Shen world.
This book truly had it all, humor, angst, betrayal, coming of age, Steam, Some questionable morals, dirty talking, and finally a love story that was written in the stars. It is very different from the usual work from this author but that just made me like it even more. She kept it fresh and in that difference, it made me see how truly talented that she is. That being said, there are some things (often something that is a hard limit in romance books–Nothing dark but a hard limit nevertheless) that are discussed in this book that other readers might find questionable or might not be their cup of tea. My take on that is to just work through it as it all can be explained in the end.
There are a lot of different facets to this just as there are a lot of different people involved in this story coming to fruition the way that it needs to for Rory and Mal to have their journey unfold the way that it does. These two characters made me believe in the power of the universe. It also made me wonder if there truly is a bigger plan in play when it comes to the universe and how much fate plays in finding true love. Is it serendipity or is it all planned? In the case of these two, I would like to think it was a combination of both because sometimes it takes a little guidance and assistance from the most unlikely of people and circumstances.
Off-topic, I hope that if this author ever gets another wild hair and wants to write something different than her norm that she revisits a certain friend and TDAH get the chance to tell their story!
Dear Readers,
In the Unlikely Event you come across my review during a search of whether you should read this book or not, I have one suggestion
Do NOT hesitate to read it!
I’m not going to say much except that you need to go in blind. I’m serious when I say it’s going to make the book so much better if you don’t know much about it before hand
So…..
Don’t bother with the synopsis and don’t bother with reviews because there is nothing out there like this book. It’s perfect, it’s painful, it’s passionate. It’s going to have you in readgret because you read it so fast and you’ll wish you had savored it.
Like the snow globe on the cover this book is going to shake up what you thought it was going to be about or what you’re used to reading from L.J Shen.
It’s so different thank anything else I’ve read. It’s just not about Rory and Mal, or a note. It’s about love and villains. That not every character is as one dimensional as we think. It’s about a cow, a rockstar and a damn chocolate bar. You’re going to love the characters and hate them. You’re even going to love the ones you want to hate.
Just trust me when I say dive in and go for it. You need this book in your life. Maybe My review fell into your hands on purpose, who knows. Like Mal says it’s Kismet.

6/5 stars, or 10 starts either way it’s off the scale
Gah!!! In the Unlikely Event was such an incredible read and absolutely magical. There are some books that you read and completely forget once finished. And then there are books like this one. Books that leave you breathless and that embed themselves deep within you. Books that stir up all of your emotions, and you just know, without a doubt, that it will stick with you forever. In the Unlikely Event is that type of book. Shen delivered us a story that is SO unlike any of her previous books, and it was absolutely PHENOMENAL!
Malachy Doherty and Aurora “Rory” Jenkins had a steamy whirlwind romance many years ago, which ended with a promise to marry if their paths were ever to cross again. Fast forward eight years, and she once again, finds herself in that same foreign land. But during those years apart, Rory discovers that the fun and charming Mal she remembers has now become cold and aloof. He has his reasons of course, but those walls quickly crumble once he lays eyes on her again. He doesn’t care that she has a new life, a boyfriend and lives overseas. He is determined to wear her down and make her uphold her end of the deal. He will stop at nothing to win back her heart.
There aren’t enough words to describe just how special this journey is that L.J. Shen has taken me on. Packed with all of the feels, Mal and Rory’s story really touched my soul. Books like this are the reason that I read. I hope that you will take a chance on it and experience the beauty of it just as I did. It is a heartbreakingly beautiful MUST READ that I am unlikely to ever forget. In the Unlikely Event gets ALL. OF. THE. STARS from me!!!
L. J. Shen is quickly becoming one of my one click authors. She has the balance of making a character arrogant and cocky in one chapter to funny and swoon worthy the next. I’ve read several of her books and this one is not like any of her other books! It gave me the boost I needed after having a really bad week.
Rory went to Ireland with the purpose of finding out what her father was like but did not expect to meet a cocky swoon worthy Irishman that she gave her heart too. What she didn’t expect was to come face to face with Mal and have all her feelings she thought she tucked away to come flooding back.
Mal was a drunken singer songwriter with no plans to ever meet and fall in love with an American. They promised eachother one night and a contract that if they ever found eachother again that they would get married. Fast forward 8 years later and one pissed off Irishman.
Alot of things have happened in the 8 years sense Mal and Rory last saw eachother. Rory thought Mal had come for her to honor there contract. But Mal has so much more in store for her than she thinks.
Can Mal and Rory find the love they shared or is it to late for them?
ITUE was an extraordinary read. It was moving. It was angsty, it was emotional. It was the whole package.
This book packed a big punch. It was full of angst, in pure LJ Shen style. Reading Malachy’s and Rory’s story was so entertaining, and the fire between them explosive.
I just adored this book. It was angsty, it was entertaining and was pure genius. I just ate it all up. Highly recommended.
This is a very hard review to write. I will start out that I love this author. And if we are being honest, not every book, not every story, from your favorite author will be 5 stars. Sometimes the story is just okay, I didn’t love and I didn’t hate.
There was angst, drama, sexiness, sarcastic wit, as well as miscommunication, lies, secrets and at times meanness that didn’t sit well with me. I will say that the premise of the plot was what drew me in. I did find the different POV’s to be an interesting addition to the story as well but some seemed questionable.
As for Malachy and Rory, I liked them more when they were young as this story is told in both past and present tense. Their present day selves were more immature in my opinion and I think it is why I didn’t fully connect with them. Their second chance love was filled with miscommunication, heartache, cheating, lies, and secrets. This story had touches of romcom but it just didn’t all come together smoothly in my opinion.
There are many 5 star reviews and I implore you to read them. While this was an okay read for me, I am looking forward to LJ Shen’s next book, the book after that and the next and next and next……..
I have so many thoughts and feelings about this book, it’s difficult to write them down. To put it plainly, this book was wonderful. So different from anything this author’s written. And in my humble opinion, her best work yet.
Let’s start with the plot. It was the perfect mix of fantasy and reality. I mean because who doesn’t want to have a fling with a sexy Irish dude? And then have him, against all reason, fall so in love with you. I mean things like that never really happen. It’s that epic fantasy element that causes us to love romance books.
But there was also the harsh reality of life thrown in. Despite the love they feel, they have completely separate lives that they cannot or do not want to abandon. Before they go their separate ways, they agree to be together someday if, in the unlikely event, they see each other again. Again, pure hopeful fantasy. But then the story hits so hard with so much harsh reality. The family dynamics in this are amazing. There’s so much hate and angst surrounding Mal and Rory.
Mal hates Rory, though she has no idea why. Her mother is keeping a huge secret that everyone but her knows, her life is a perfectly boring lie. Throw in a trip back to the place where she and Mal fell in love, a crazy rockstar, a horrible boss, an annoyed cow, and the craziest use for a chocolate bar I’ve ever read. And well, you have quite possibly the best romance book written this year.
It was funny, unexpected, heart wrenching, and so magical. I loved it more than I can express in words. Mal and Rory were amazing characters and I highly recommend this book to everyone.
A NOTE FROM A FIRST TIME ARC READER
In the Unlikely Event, I Kristine Meadows didn’t expect to laugh, agreed and feel for every characters on this beautiful book…
When you thought you’ve read it all then Leigh Shen hand over this book to you and BOOM!
She did give us a warning and yet it caught me off guard.
Rory went to Dublin looking for answers but what she didn’t expect is to find Mal…a 24hrs whirlwind romance…and in the unlikely event they meet again… Mal have changed…
Rory is pure and Mal is… Malachy.
When Shen said it’s a ‘tad wilder’ well you my fellow reader must read this book because this is completely not a norm to any of her books… even tho the delivery is different you can tell it’s all from the master herself…
I can’t get over how much I absolutely love this book!!!! LJ Shen never ever disappoints!!!!! Top notch writing from an all time phenomenal author!!!!!
ITUE is FIVE HUMONGOUS STARS!!
Mal and Rory
I truly did not know what to expect from In The Unlikely Event. I was highly anticipating the newest release from Ms. Shen and I was thrilled once I dug in and could not put it down.
Mal and Rory have a connection everyone wants. But only for 24 hours before Rory leaves Ireland and heads back to the US. Before leaving, a napkin contract is made and she never truly expects to see Mal again.
Years later, there he is. The events that follow will leave you facinated, skeptical, laughing, crying, loving, awe struck and lusty.
I really do recommend reading ITUE!!!! AMAZING!!!
“Best. Day. Ever.”
I’m suffering from emotional whiplash!
I was laughing one moment crying the next.
“That was a minute ago. Its time to move on. Don’t let the little things in life bother you, yeah?”
Mal is perfectly imperfect. I think from the moment he winked he stole my heart.
“Find what you love and let it kill you. ”
That was Rory all or nothing. She is that friend who to outsiders, seems to have it all together. Who glides through the difficult as easy as the mundane. We know better though.
This was a whole new side of Shen’s abilities.
I crushed hard on Mal and his antics. He was so vivid – So wonderfully crafted. Perfectly Imperfect. He complimented Rory’s character flawlessly.
And don’t even get me started on the chemistry that consistently sparked and ignited between them.
This was a solid story line that invoked passion and vehemence for me as a reader.
Mal and Rory had that instant love that so many dreams of. Both already had plans already in motion though that would never allow for the long term, but what harm was there in indulging – Just a taste.
A quirky cast, engaging story line, all-around entertaining.
The notes were a hoot!
One of the best reads of 2019!
In the Unlikely Event is the newest standalone from this undeniably talented author and man, was I caught unaware?!
I meant what I said. Ms. Shen totes caught me unaware with this one. I wasn’t expecting that (you’ll know what I was talking about once you read it!) but of course, she did say expect the unexpected and I should have paid attention. Nevertheless, it was a pleasant surprise. In the author’s true fashion, she brought us another refreshing, unique love story that guarantees all the accompanied angst and feels that we’ve come to love but more. Again, hands down an amazing read! Can’t wait for more from the author!
3.5-Stars
Shen’s word wizardry has kept me stuck to many a page in the books she has written thus far and In The Unlikely Event is no exception. But here’s the thing. Although her stamp is clearly evident, the ingenious plot came as a surprise. Crazy, uplifting and emotionally distressing, I found it a tad convoluted in places. One minute my hopes were raised only to come crashing down. And at times I wasn’t sure whether to give her protagonists a good-hiding or hug them. In fact, the heroine was just as confused as me and it took a long time for either of us to make heads or tails of what appeared to be an omnishambles.
‘His talent, charm, and beauty are a weapon, and right now they’re aimed at me.’
Lots, but I mean lots of goings-on should have scandalised me, but they didn’t. Everything that happens is well-thought-out, adding to the angst which comes and goes in waves. I didn’t like some of the secondary characters but that’s the idea. You’re not supposed to. However, I connected with Malachy Doherty aka Mal instantly. He’s by no means perfect, just how I like my book heroes and wow, Shen did a really fine job with the Irish-Brit English lingo. You see, this is Aurora Belle—everyone calls her Rory and Mal’s story to tell, but no-one goes without having their say. To mention a few, an upper-class Englishman who I didn’t much care for and a cow that gets let off lightly gifts us with their accounts! This is where a dash of dry wit, hearty criticism, a couple of outbursts and dollops of warmth kick in, sometimes lightening up the mood. Also, the story flipping back and forth gave me a better understanding of Mal and Rory’s past feelings and present grievances.
‘There’s an elephant in the room, and if she thinks I’ll take mercy on her by addressing it she’s about to discover New Mal is nothing like the one she left behind.’
The palpable animosity between these two got me turning the pages quicker than quick to see if they were going to work out their differences. When Rory found out that many untold truths were being kept from her, I wondered if she’d be able to ignore the weight of not knowing what they were and go for it. Have a second chance at love. On occasion, Mal was deliberately spiteful and him deceiving her as he did wound me up a tad. I thought by not being honest with her out of character as he was unquestionably in a conundrum, too. I spent a good while wishing he’d find the right moment and words to soften the blow. Stange when this poet-cum-songwriter had the last spent eight years composing hurtful lyrics aimed at her for reasons I’d rather not go into. And you’ll see why Rory has a habit of collecting paper napkins although only one that Mal has holds the key.
“My truth shouldn’t be conditional,”she whispers.
I take a deep breath. “Neither should your promise.”
Rory definitely left her mark. I loved her cheeky remarks, resolve and compassion. I can see her in my mind’s eye wearing wonderfully weird attire that fit perfectly with her persona. Regardless of a shared skew-whiff moral compass which consumes her more than Mal, it was he who stole the show. Ladies, he is hot and even hotter in the bedroom. Yes, the chemistry is sizzling and Shen…well, her amorous scenes are on the verge of erotica. Inner thoughts abound, there’s less banter than I would have liked; nonetheless, my reading enjoyment wasn’t hampered in the slightest. Leading up to the epilogue, Shen’s second chance lovers-to enemies-to-lovers romance is a little bizarre, but ITUE is most certainly worth reading.
“Loving someone is willingly accepting that they can destroy you.”
In the unlikely event is a brand new stand alone from one of my unicorn authors. I love everything she writes but at times I was little unsure of this one. Although I loved the premise of this story, there were times that I hated the characters and the decisions they made. Some of them made me legit ragey. There was also something that meant I didn’t give the book 5 stars, but that is because of my own preferences.
“You were a beautiful mistake, but that doesn’t mean I don’t regret you.”
Lots of angst, twists and turns that I didn’t see coming! There were plenty of LOL moments that will have you howling, and then in the next instant your heart will drop into your stomach at the next revelation. I fell in love with Malachy. He was so funny in the flash backs from when they first met, starting their love story to spiral. Little does Rory know that fate is playing a hand in their HEA and she has to endure a lot to find that with her Prince Charming.
Overall a fantastic, unique romance that will hit you in the feels.

6/5 stars, or 10 starts either way it’s off the scale
In The Unlikely Event is an EPIC, second chance romance that stands the test of time, deception, and betrayal.
ITUE is a story all of it’s own. L.J. Shen’s writing style is unique, fresh, and flawless. The storyline was entirely unexpected. I love that she didn’t play it safe and wrote a story completely different than anything she has written before. I enjoyed the multiple POVs. Especially the ones that were a bit unusual. What perspective!
While reading Mal and Rory’s story, I was overwhelmed with emotions. I was initially thrilled, then I felt like I had been sucker punched. My heart hurt. I was confused. Dying to know WHAT HAPPENED?! What happened to the carefree, adventurous boy so full of life?! Who was this grown man who had become so hostile and angry?
As the story unraveled, I was in awe of it’s complexity. It was MAGIC! I had become consumed just as Rory was by their undeniable connection, their passion, their love. The intense and passionate Mal pulled me in as well. I was lost to his charisma and his Irish charm. I could not get enough!
L.J. Shen is a unicorn author. She is a brilliant storyteller. She is one of my FAVORITES. I highly recommend that you not only read, In The Unlikely Event, but all of her books so that you too will know what it’s like to be #addictedtoshen.
