“A roller-coaster ride of a plot with all manner of twists and turns.” –Midwest Book Review Joni Weir kissed her husband goodbye just that morning, but she never figured it would be the last time she’d see him alive. When the news hits that Officer Barry Weir was shot and killed in the line of duty, Detective Madison Knight and every cop in Stiles is itching for revenge. With evidence pointing … for revenge. With evidence pointing to a drive-by shooting, the investigation takes Madison into the seedy underbelly of the city in the search for justice. But as she digs, the evidence only becomes more puzzling.
With emotions running high, Madison’s relationships are tested to their breaking point. Troy Matthews, her boyfriend and colleague, also Weir’s childhood friend, is cut deeply, and his grief drives a wedge between them. But she’s not going to let her own pain stop her from getting to the truth. Madison will push through—for Troy, but also for Weir’s wife and three young daughters—and figure out if Weir was murdered as part of a gang initiation, a straight-up hate crime, or a targeted kill. But with members of the Stiles PD possibly under attack, she has to do it fast. Before more officers pay with their lives.
A brilliant action-packed mystery with heart-stopping twists. Perfect for fans of Robert Dugoni, J.D. Robb, and Lisa Regan.

“Madison was caught up in an overwhelming moment of thoughts of life and death, of mortality, of what really matters in life and what doesn’t.” We were there, too.
Slightly amateurish writing, but a good story. Writer got hung up on trivial “evidence” that was really immaterial to the case.
Good story
I have read every one of Carolyn Arnold’s books. They are the can’t put down type of book. I am looking forward to reading more of them as they come out.
As a retired Trooper, I found this book way overboard with everyone’s sorrow. Yes, we hate loosing officers, but come on, every cop in this book got all tears eyed, chocked up and could barely talk, not the way it really is. We suck it up and do our jobs, . This book makes cops sound like blubbering cry babies. Way off the mark.
Good book. Kept me interested and turning pages trying to see how this was going to play out!
Bit predictable but okay read
Very well done. Good read.
Enjoyed the characters and plot. Realistic relationships, good plot development. Look forward to reading more from this author.
An action packed book with a lot of emotion involved. Really enjoyed reading it!
Didn’t know if I’d like at first. The more I read i found it very good.
A little slow
Another superb Madison Knight story from the great author Carolyn Arnold, that makes every penny of the price worth its weight in gold, In the Line of Duty is Detective Madison Knight Series’ Book 7 and a lucky no 7 it is too.
Despite personal relationship issues between Madison and beau Troy, that see them separate for a while, the intensity of her latest investigation – the drive-by murder of one of their own department, Detective Barry Weir – in the small hours of the night, while refuelling his car – leads to the suspicion of gang revenge…but of course things are never that simple! Even a bumper sticker may turn out to be a vital clue, but is just as likely to be a red-herring.
Can Madison unravel the truth and lies spun by he many suspects, before trying to save her love life from going down the pan? Read In the Line of Duty by Carolyn Arnold and prepare to be amazed!
There were a lot of twists and many characters involved in the crime, but it all came together at the end – great read.
Outstanding book.
One murder in a book that must be as long as War & Peace,or it just felt like it.Terribly long winded & would have been better as a short story.Don’t both if you value your time at all.
Really liked this book. Great characters, fast moving and good story line. Easy and fun to read.
A uniformed police officer is shot and killed at a gas station while he pumps gas into his patrol car. His wife and children are devastated and the whole police force vows to find his killer. Is it a gang related killing or something else? Two detectives who were his closest friends are leading the investigation. This was an okay read, but not great. There was a lot of dialogue wasted on discussion of “who done it” and not enough investigation. I really felt my interest waning as dead ends predominated and the number of suspects just kept growing. By the end there were so many names of suspects being bantered about it was hard to keep track of them all, then the reader is blindsided with the identity of a less than central character as the real killer. The writing really fell apart at the end.
This was a great read. Carolyn Arnold knows how to tell a story!
A true to life inside look at a police department and their families when one of their own is brutally taken from them. A great job by the author..
