“A roller-coaster ride of a plot with all manner of twists and turns.” –Midwest Book Review Joni Weir kissed her husband goodbye just that morning, but she never figured it would be the last time she’d see him alive. When the news hits that Officer Barry Weir was shot and killed in the line of duty, Detective Madison Knight and every cop in Stiles is itching for revenge. With evidence pointing … for revenge. With evidence pointing to a drive-by shooting, the investigation takes Madison into the seedy underbelly of the city in the search for justice. But as she digs, the evidence only becomes more puzzling.
With emotions running high, Madison’s relationships are tested to their breaking point. Troy Matthews, her boyfriend and colleague, also Weir’s childhood friend, is cut deeply, and his grief drives a wedge between them. But she’s not going to let her own pain stop her from getting to the truth. Madison will push through—for Troy, but also for Weir’s wife and three young daughters—and figure out if Weir was murdered as part of a gang initiation, a straight-up hate crime, or a targeted kill. But with members of the Stiles PD possibly under attack, she has to do it fast. Before more officers pay with their lives.
A brilliant action-packed mystery with heart-stopping twists. Perfect for fans of Robert Dugoni, J.D. Robb, and Lisa Regan.

The characters were a little on the “wimpy” side for me. Too much personal and is me going on that distracted from the actual story.
A real page turner. Very factual and believable. Held my interezt and found it very hard to put down.
Although often repetive, this captures the real behind the scenes attitudes and dedication of officers left to solve a murder of one of there own.
I liked the characters and the story line. It was a good read.
I love & read all by Carolyn Arnold, such a great writer!
Difficult to keep up with the huge cast of characters. The author does quite a bit of “circling the airport” before the book is finally concluded.
Makes you appreciate the police. Very emotional.
Enjoyed book, last 2-3 chapters got somewhat convoluted.
Loved reading this book and in fact couldn’t put it down. Seriously looking at more books by this author. Great read
Had good characters q
Barely readable
I have a daughter in LE and this spoke to me in both plot and characterization.
I only download books that are currently “free”, so they are not of the best quality. But sometimes keep me amused, here in Thailand.
I got really tired of reading about the main character’s constant questioning of what love was supposed to be about. In previous books she didn’t obsess so much and just got on with her life. I gave up about 30% through the book
I’m tired of hard-boiled female detectives who always think they know best, charge around antagonizing people and arguing with their superiors. I’m tired too of their relationship and commitment issues. The story itself is OK and the solution is interesting but I’m not going to rush out and read another Madison Knight book.
Great read! Also a long book, so allow time for it.
