In the land of gods and monsters, she was set free.Left, lost, forgotten.Cast out of the only world she remembers, Pet now answers to a new name—victim.Ares walked away without a backward glance and left her desperate for safety, desire, and the freedom she found in his cruel touch. But in the end, Pet discovers nothing is ever free.
“Pet, there’s no one to tell. It’s just you and me here, and you can’t reason with a monster. You have no options here but to do what I tell you, or to be punished, and then do what I tell you. Are we clear?”
Ares is an arrogant asshole. Lots of ‘A’ words, including addictive. Not only to his Pet, but to me as well. I didn’t want to like him, because even he admits that he’s a monster. I wanted to try and reason with him, but even she soon learned that “There’s no point. Begging doesn’t work on monsters. Tears don’t either. The only thing he responds to are pain, and screams, and coming.”
Pet has amnesia. She woke up in captivity and remembers nothing before him, Ares, her god. “How can anyone be capable of such tenderness, and yet be so malicious in the same breath? Ares has the face of a god but the heart of a monster. There is true ugliness in him—darkness, bitter and rotten.” She doesn’t want to want him, but she can’t help herself. Her body craves what only he can provide. He’s stolen her body, her memories, and her control. Does her heart stand a chance against the beautiful beast?
#MindFuckAlert! This dark and gritty story will have you using your WTF? face at some point before you turn the last page. And then, you’ll be joining me, stalking the author like a kid pestering a parent repeatedly asking When? Because this isn’t the end, and at the risk of a spanking, I’ll beg for more. Please? I promise to be a good girl. *fingers crossed behind my back* The line forms here…
Dang. I’m not sure what I just read, but I need more. Carmen Jenner pulled out all the stops and then some. I’m hooked. A dark, sordid, erotic story that left me on the edge of my seat and wondering where Ares lives because dang, I would love to bump into him!
If you love your romance dark, twisted, and downright filthy, then you need to meet Ares and his Pet. Carmen Jenner has created a world that I never wanted to escape from because just like Pet, I may have fallen for our dark Master, Ares.
Bring on the next one!
Okay…..WTAF did I just read?
Holy god damn.
I’m still in shock.
Here I thought that I had read dark, but lord this is more than dark. This is depraved, sick and twisted and all things evil and I absolutely loved it.
I want to keep my review brief for two reasons.
Firstly because I definitely don’t want to give anything away and secondly because there is still an installment to come which means the ending WILL BLOW YOUR MIND like it did mine.
Ares. I don’t know whether to love him or hate him. The dude is a monster and nothing short of vicious and evil. I’m so divided right now.
Pet. I just love her. A beautiful woman who is shattered, broken and left with no free will, but yet never gives up hope. A strength like no other.
Ares and Pet together. It’s an explosive mix that had me squirming in my seat. The sheer brutality had me holding my breath, I just couldn’t put it down. The horrors and pure insanity committed behind closed doors had my head spinning.
A mixture of torture and fear where pure evil meets innocence, where a monster meets a princess, where there are no rules for Pet because Ares holds all the cards and EVERYTHING WILL go his way no matter the cost.
I cannot wait to know what happens next.
5 stars
Copy received from author for an honest review
You will need to have read Part 1 before you dive into part 2, as part 2 stars right where part 1 left off.
I admit, I have terrible bookzheimer’s and I had forgotten some of the details of the first book (even though it was only out a few months ago) but I quickly picked up on them again as I began reading.
Camille/Pet has been through the wringer and I was not sure how she was going to cope with where she was at this time and place in the story.
What was got was dark, gritty and smacked of hope and rebellion. I loved her spark and the fight in her, wanting to find her way back to her “home”.
Ares, oy I have to say that I got p!ssed at him at times, however I knew that he was the real Ares.
And just as I had hope that they might fight their happy, it was a case of “WTH Carmen?!?!”
Told in dual POV, I was on the edge of my seat, nervously turning each page, needing to know what would happen next.
We were cliffied, but it was expected. Now I am impatiently awaiting the 3rd book to see how things play out.
Please don’t make me wait too long, Ms Jenner!
The highly anticipated part two of In The Land Of Gods And Monsters is Here and it will not disappoint! This book starts right where book one left off with Pet(aka: Camille) in the hospital being questioned by the FBI. “Ares let me go, and here I am, imprisoned in another cell” We get a little taste of who Pet really was before her abduction/amnesia. Ares and Pet are Perfection together! “He’s not just my Sir; he’s my home.” This series drags you in and consumes you! I want more now! Ends in a cliffhanger. Told in dual POV
Wow, this book was definitely intense and dark as can be.
I went into this one with my eyes closed and an open mind not knowing what to expect or what I was going to get. But I’m so glad I did go in blind because this book definitely hit all my awesomeness buttons.
We get this in dual POV, but mostly in Pet’s POV and we get to feel and experience how she is feeling and what she’s going through being Ares’ submissive. I’ve read some pretty dark books and this one definitely goes on top of my dark reads list of 2018!
This story enraptured me whole and I just couldn’t stop reading it. I loved everything about this story and how the relationship developed between Pet and Ares. I can’t wait to get more from these characters because I was definitely left with many unanswered questions. I am so looking forward to reading more in this series!
Also, Hermes (Ares’ twin brother) was just one broody SOB and even though he wasn’t a very nice man, I want to read about him and what’s his story.
One moment she is engaged to Parker and is a ballerina who finally achieved her goal of dancing in Swan Lake and in the next moment she can’t remember who she is or anything about her past. Now she is a prisoner and is called “pet” by the men who have her captive.
Will she escape from where she is being held and as she slowly learns more about her captors will her fate be decided for her?
This book was so good and so dark and I loved it!
One thing I loved was that you never associated “Pet” with a name so in a weird way you automatically referred to her as pet which bothered me so much but I couldn’t not as I never knew her name. I think that made you view her as more of a victim and you really wanted her to get back to where she came from. You really want to know if Parker or her best friend Dimitri were looking for her but you know nothing about what else is going on.
You do learn that Pet is being held by two brothers, Ares and Hermes but they were quite different from each other. I was super curious about who they were working for and then when we went and met Texas things began to get super intense. Part of me was super worried about Israel as it was clear about how much he wanted Ares.
The end was so unexpected and my jaw dropped!!
I can’t wait for the next book as I have a feeling things are not done yet with Ares and Pet!
Jenner has pegged the destituteness, the bleakness and the conflicted emotions associated with being a captive in a world filled with men who are nothing more than monsters but think themselves a god.
When you have been trained to know nothing else but the heaviness of his punishments or the softness of his hand how can one survive without the instruction from her master? Pet has been given the chance to escape, and run she did. But what now? Where does she go from here? Jenner has left us drifting in the wind, wondering what is to become of Pet, Ares, and his brother Hermes. I am interested to see where the author takes this tale and how genuine and strong the bond between Ares and his Pet is.
The darkness within this story is not for those with strait-laced preferences. If your propensity is for fluffy romances with sugary sweetness I would suggest you look for that in another book.
4* Stars!
I want to be Carmen Jenner when I grow up.
I hope she never stops writing. A true original…I’m sad such great authors (and their stories) are being swallowed up by algorithms, bad authors with stupid amounts of marketing cash, and other trash novels at the moment.
Ms Jenner is a real diamond in the rough. A lot of these Aussie authors are diamonds in the rough.
Oh, and this book is amazing.
Buy it.
That’s all I need to say about it.
This was my first book by this Author and just WOW!!! I couldn’t turn the pages fast enough, it was highly addictive and very dark and raw as Ares does his thing with Pet that will leave you with your mouth hanging open, Ares is very intense and with no compassion and with the few different sides we see its hard to decide if you want to murder him or like him, this pushes your boundries and if you like dark with a strong feisty woman like Pet or a tormentor that is Ares then go for it I loved it this just sucks you in right from the first page right to the end with these very well developed characters with flawless writing. I seriously cannot wait for more.
She is in the spotlight…who you ask? My pet, my muse she is the light to my dark, the beauty to my ugly and the colour to my grey. I show her a world of pleasure and pain, an amalgamation of pure ecstasy, where both are like lovers who dwell together. She is mine to share, humiliate, showcase and do whatever I want because her body and soul are mine!! Do I share my secrets with her and tell her everything, usually the answer is absolutely, but I don’t and that confuses me.
I wake up naked in a dark, dank cell and I have lots of questions…foremost “Who am I?” I keep having this reoccurring dream, there’s a bright light and I’m spinning into a vortex of dizziness! I’ve landed in the arms of a monster, a beautiful monster but nevertheless a monster. He opens me up to a whole new world of pain and not necessarily physical! Ares’ toys with my mind, he manipulates me to submit and forget. I’m broken, my brain is confused it’s been rewired. How can something I know is wrong be so rewarding? It’s like a drug is running through my veins I want this, no I need this! I’ve lost control and Are’s is now in charge, we are as needy as one another.
In the Land of Gods and Monsters by Carmen Jenner is the first book in a new series (duet?), Gods and Monsters . Dark and twisted, I’m not really sure what I read or how I feel about the characters. There is an underlying plot that was not revealed in this book and the relationship between Dom and sub was tested and tried and, as stated in the blurb, is full of dubious consent. I only know I NEED to know what happens. I need to know the why of Ares and Hermes and what they are planning. For those of you that love the dark and twisted this is definitely a winner. Enjoy!
Freaking fantastic!!! Twisted and suspenseful!! Raw and gritty!! Awesome book!!
Today my review will be a little different from what I usually do. I’m trying to absorb the impact this book has had. I knew it would be heavy, but I was not ready for it. Carmen Jenner, you were brilliant! The book is wonderful, capable of provoking diverse reactions in the reader. I recommend having an open mind when embarking on this journey. As I said, it is a heavy, dark story with various situations that cause discomfort and can be triggers for some people. But if you take a chance, take a deep breath and embark on the reading. I guarantee you will not regret it.
Pet is a famous ballerina who is kidnapped from her dressing room after her presentation. She wakes up in a cage, naked, bruised, hungry, thirsty and out of memory. She does not know who she is, what she is doing there, nor who took her. And then Ares comes in, an enigmatic character, which you will hate throughout the reading. The author was right when she said people would love to hate him.
Ares is a Dom, whose “job” is to train women until they become perfect submissive slaves and then sell them at an auction for the highest price. You can already see the tone of the book. Forget romance. Here it does not exist. Just as there is no couple to cheer. It is literally the land of the Gods and Monsters of the title of the book, a place of pain, humiliation, submission and an underworld where fantasies have no limits, prices or morals.
And with this scenario armed, we will watch Ares try to “break” Pet, who will fight in every way not to lose herself even more. As Ares advances in training, Pet hates herself, for though her spirit wants to fight, her body surrenders to the whims of her new Master. Who will win this fight?
The fact that the character did not have a name, an identity, was great. Only at the end of the book, on the last page, we discovered her name. Throughout the narrative she attends to Pet, which helps to characterize the state of submission, slave, property she finds.
Ares has a twin brother, Hermes, as or more dangerous than him. Again, the pun with the mythology was interesting. Ares really is a force of nature, nothing disturbs him, his command is order for submissive ears. Hermes on the other hand, is the messenger of dubious business, is the man behind the whole transaction and money. They both have a bigger reason for being in this business, which has piqued my curiosity. As said by Pet, if monsters are afraid of someone, it’s worth my curiosity.
Ares shows (though brief and always calculated) some emotion. And the past is repeating itself again. Ares, Pet and Achilles was a plot I did not see approaching. Who would have thought the monster would be able to fall in love.
The book is the first part of a trilogy, and I can not wait for the next one. There is no way the ending can be happy. It is impossible to cheer for the male characters. Pet deserves my compassion. This woman will never be “normal” again. What she went through was brutal. Ares “breaks” her majestically. It made her yearn for pain and pleasure. In the real world where she belongs, she will always be a victim of circumstances. He condemned her to an unhappy life.
Serious mind game
This is not a romance –
This is the story of how one man chose, captured and eventually clipped the wings of his Pet – ensuring she would never fly again
This is a very dark psychological thriller that is not for the faint of heart
If non con , humiliation , beautiful monsters and fantasy plots are not your cup of tea I would suggest skipping this one
I love a good dark romance, and this one certainly delivered on that front. It was the kind of darkness I love, ensuring I was hooked throughout. At the end, all I wanted was more. I need part two, and I need it soon!
Phew this book was insane. Such a crazy roller coaster ride.
ITLOGAM isn’t for the faint of hearts when it comes to domination and submission. Braking people into slaves. The story is raw, dark and gritty. The synopsis says it’s a dark romance but for me it’s more dark erotica. I couldn’t feel the romance until close to the end. That doesn’t mean I wasn’t entertained cause I thoroughly was.
What I enjoyed was Pet’s journey. Her transformation. Especially what she endured and how she kept fighting. The punishments and the pleasures Ares gave her. Both her body and mind. It left Pet a mess numerous times. Making her question herself, her reason for staying and wanting to escape her captor. Her feelings a mixture of hate and love.
Ares is a man I both hated and loved. In equal measures. I was also curious and intrigued by him. Especially his past and the slaves he’s broken. He too struggles with his emotions. Distancing himself from his slave. From Pet. As rough and brutal he gets with her he’s also capable of showing tenderness. That side is why I felt he had a heart and I can’t wait to see more of that in the sequel.
The story is fast paced and when I reached the final chapter it was too soon. Pet and Ares have changed each other’s lives irrevocably and they can never go back. I can’t wait to find out how they’ll move forward. The ending was great leaving me wanting so much more. I wanted a dark story and I got it.
4 God of War and Pain Stars
In the Land of Gods and Monsters is only the beginning of Ares and Pet’sstory and holy freaking moly my heart is already going crazy so I can’t even begin to imagine what is going to happen to it when I finally get my hands on the next part! Seriously…this story completely BLEW MY MIND and was the perfect introduction into Carmen Jenner’s phenomenal writing style. It’s still hard to believe that this was the first book that I read from this author. I am in complete awe right now by this dark and twisted romance that dealt with the controversial topic of human trafficking.
This story will test your limits and you will be left wondering what the heck am I reading and why the heck am I head over heels in love with every moment of it? I was pushed outside my usually comfort zone, but it was beyond worth it! I cannot wait to get my hands on the next part of this story!
When I started In the Land of Gods and Monsters by Carmen Jenner I knew this would be a dark read based on the blurb and it truly was. It was a dark story of being taken, beaten and abused. Of having no rights and being treated as if you were nothing. But it was also about craving and wanting what you know is wrong because that is all you know now.
Pet was living her dream. Engaged and the star ballerina of the current production, she was excited and happy. Then she was stolen and left with no memories of who she was. All she knows now is the four walls she is kept in and Ares. Ares who decides everything. Ares who gives pleasure and pain as he sees fit. Though she wants to deny him and fight, she has also come to desire, even crave, the pleasure and pain he provides. Is this her life now?
In the Land of Gods and Monsters by Carmen Jenner was dark, gritty, raw and I absolutely devoured the story. Ares was a hard and cold man. He demanded and stole and took, but something about Pet also touched him. Pet was both scared and strong. She was nothing less than property, but why then did he want to keep her? And that ending! I cannot wait to get my hands on the second book!
4.5 stars. Read and reviewed for Sultry Sirens Book Blog.
Happy reading!
This story needs a HUGE warning. The themes here are dark. VERY dark. Kidnapping, violence, forced submission and lack of consent are all present themes. If this is not for you, don’t pick this one up. It is dark erotica and I struggled hard with this one. It is not at all something I would normally read. I very nearly abandoned it about 20% through, but I wanted to see where it was headed and I appreciated the writing quality so I continued. It also ends on a bit of a cliffhanger, so be warned if you like to wait until all parts of a series are released.
Pet is a ballerina, taken from her dressing room after opening night. She is held captive and trained to submit to Ares. The situation is dark and gets darker, with pain and pleasure blending together. There are outside forces at work and other players brought in to muddy the waters. I was not expecting the twists or the ending, and wonder what it is the author has in store for these characters.
