Erik Larson, New York Times bestselling author of Devil in the White City, delivers a remarkable story set during Hitler’s rise to power.
The time is 1933, the place, Berlin, when William E. Dodd becomes America’s first ambassador to Hitler’s Nazi Germany in a year that proved to be a turning point in history.
A mild-mannered professor from Chicago, Dodd brings along his wife, son, and … Dodd brings along his wife, son, and flamboyant daughter, Martha. At first Martha is entranced by the parties and pomp, and the handsome young men of the Third Reich with their infectious enthusiasm for restoring Germany to a position of world prominence. Enamored of the “New Germany,” she has one affair after another, including with the suprisingly honorable first chief of the Gestapo, Rudolf Diels. But as evidence of Jewish persecution mounts, confirmed by chilling first-person testimony, her father telegraphs his concerns to a largely indifferent State Department back home. Dodd watches with alarm as Jews are attacked, the press is censored, and drafts of frightening new laws begin to circulate. As that first year unfolds and the shadows deepen, the Dodds experience days full of excitement, intrigue, romance — and ultimately, horror, when a climactic spasm of violence and murder reveals Hitler’s true character and ruthless ambition.
Suffused with the tense atmosphere of the period, and with unforgettable portraits of the bizarre Göring and the expectedly charming — yet wholly sinister — Goebbels, In the Garden of Beasts lends a stunning, eyewitness perspective on events as they unfold in real time, revealing an era of surprising nuance and complexity. The result is a dazzling, addictively readable work that speaks volumes about why the world did not recognize the grave threat posed by Hitler until Berlin, and Europe, were awash in blood and terror.

It was so interesting reading about events in this time and place. The way the facts were brought to life through the characters was fascinating.
One of the best books I’ve read this year. It’s nonfiction, but the story unfolds like a well written novel. I look forward to reading more books by Erik Larson.
An informative and historical portrayal of living in Hitler’s Germany at the start of WWII, the rise of the Third Reich and the persecution of Jews as witnessed by the first ambassador to Germany.
Thoroughly enjoyed it.
4.5 Stars. Excellent and terrifying story of the American ambassador to Germany and his family as Hitler came to power. The true story is simultaneously unbelievable and head-shakingly obvious. How no one would heed warnings or do anything about the rise of the authoritarian regime is both shocking and completely expected. Ambassador Dodd was …
This book showed how Hitler was able to rise to the power he did, including info about people who supported and opposed him. It was not only historic, but also scarily similar to where America is right now. It showed the role fear played then and allows you to recognize that same fear being used by many in power today. Read it as both history and …
Love all his books
This was a great look at how Germany slowly acquiesced to the Nazi party. It should be mandatory reading for anyone interested in current events.
Any book by Eric Larson is a masterpiece — history combined with an incredible read.
This one is no exception. It’s been a while — but if you see this author – just buy the book or get it from your library . Guarantee you will not be disappointed
True story of an American Diplomat and his family sent to Germany during the rise of Hitler and his Final Solution. Initially charmed by the people they meet and develop relationships with, they learn almost too late they are in the “Garden of Beasts.”
Well written and extremely informative.
So very haunting…., still– a must read!
Eric Larson always writes history in an engaging narrative style. I’m a WWII buff, so this appealed to me.
Erik Larson knows how to make what might be a dry history into a page-turning adventure.
This was the first book of Larson’s that I read; I had lived near Chicago and have relatives in Wilmette so the topic was a draw. His writing is so clear and I literally knew nothing about the World’s Fair in Chicago and who built the grounds despite having been in those museums many times. I learned a lot and it was a real page turned – very …
My first Erik Larson book and I can’t wait to read everything else he’s written. What an exciting way to gain insight into a crucial moment in time.
Perfect parallel for our time
A detailed and insightful look into Nazi Germany prior to World War II, historically accurate and very readable.
I’ve often wondered why the German people allowed Hitler to do all he did, why so many continued to support him throughout the war, and how so many could defend him afterwards. I’m not sure those questions have concrete answers, certainly not simple ones, but this book helps to explain some of it. Clearly well researched, it tells the story from …
Another classic from Erik Larson. His mastery of infusing historical events with realistic dialogue is remarkable for bringing stories to life. This book tells the tale of life in pre-war Berlin, how some events that led to WWII unfolded, and how they affected Americans in and around the U.S. embassy in Berlin. Larson’s writing and meticulous …
