“Science fiction, drama, humour, horror, and yes–even romance–are expertly blended … IN THE DARKNESS, THAT’S WHERE I’LL KNOW YOU is shaped with an exquisite precision that culminates in a climax that leaves the … precision that culminates in a climax that leaves the reader exhausted from the dizzying thrill of emotions… If you missed this book in its original serialized format, now you’ve been given another chance to read one of the best books that I’ve had the pleasure of reading in recent memory.” – Ain’t It Cool News.com
There are hangovers, there are bad hangovers, and then there’s waking up inside someone else’s head.
The morning after a boozy night before comes with the rudest of awakenings for young bartender Charlie Wilkes. Instead of finding himself in his bedroom, he awakes in a prison consisting of moving, undulating black walls and a huge glowing screen that seems to float in thin air. But the prison isn’t a prison, and the screen isn’t a screen; incredibly, he is somehow inside the mind of a young woman – Minnie – and the screen is actually a projection of what she sees.
How did he end up in the Black Room? What has happened to his life? How is it that he recognises Minnie, feels a bond of some sort with her …even though they’ve never met? Can he exist inside the mind of a troubled, terrified, but beautiful woman with secrets of her own? Most important of all, can he ever get out?
Uncertain whether he’s even real or if he is just a figment of his host’s imagination, Charlie and Minnie must work together – and learn the secret of their strange connection – if he is to find a way out of The Black Room, a place where even the light of the screen goes out every time Minnie closes her eyes…
IN THE DARKNESS, THAT’S WHERE I’LL KNOW YOU tells the complete story of THE BLACK ROOM PARTS ONE TO FOUR all in one book, and contains all of the adventures of Charlie and Minnie. All the answers are revealed in a story guaranteed to keep the reader on the edge of their seat.
PRAISE FOR LUKE SMITHERD:
“I couldn’t help myself and read this is one sitting” – simon211175, Amazon Vine Voice
“Fantastically written characters who make you care about them right from the off.” – Andy Pettifer
“It was one of those books where you tell yourself you will read just one more page, then look at the clock and realise that it’s 2 hours later. I would thoroughly recommend it” – Elaine Hosegood
“I have owned a Kindle for about 2 years and downloaded some excellent books for very little cost but Luke Smitherd’s works beat the lot” – Silversmith, Amazon UK Review
“As soon as I started reading I was completely sucked in, which very rarely happens for me. I couldn’t wait to get home and read it each night. I laughed. I cried. I did actual real life gasps of horror.” – Katie, Amazon Review
“I spend a lot of time trawling through the kindle book store looking for cheap books, relying on reviews to make my purchases. I have come across some less than average books using this method, but also some real gems. This book definitely falls into the latter category. It had me gripped from page one.” – Steve Sut, Amazon UK Review
“This story could, probably should, be made into a movie at some point. I honestly have to believe that Smitherd should contact a producer/director and make a fabulous movie deal. Totally enjoyed the read.” – Bonnie Gleckler Clark, Goodreads

Thought I knew where it was going and then… I liked it.
Very strange story. Sometimes hard to follow. Imaginative.
It is very dark … pan intended
Really enjoyed this book. It’s out of the ordinary.
One of the best attention grippers, stay-up-all-night-to-finish it books I have read.
Such an original premise of parallel universes and two people who are destined for each other in all of those universes. But it gets dark. It’s like fantasy and sci fi and romance with just a touch of horror.
Very conflicted feeling about this book. Love the premise, very much like the connection between the protagonists.
HOWEVER…. Having half the story told from the point of view of a psychotic is tiring and depressing. Can’t relate, don’t want to relate, eventually want to stop reading. Fortunately the other characters re-entered the story just before I gave up.
It was different & not your everyday type of book.
Interesting and unique premise. Great characters. But too dark for my taste. When we finally saw the fully twisted evil of the antagonist, it was displayed with more graphic realism than I want in my entertainment. I am sure there are those who enjoy this genre, I am not one of them.
From a technical standpoint, it could stand one more editing pass for spelling, repeated phrases (or undeleted editing changes) and homonym usage. There were not too many of these, but enough to trigger my “Grammar Police” persona. I think the editor skipped some of the more graphic parts, like I wish I had!
I found this psychological thriller very difficult to reconcile in my mind. The premise is haunting and thrilling at the same time. Very thought provoking!
Not your typical storyline. Took me a bit to get into it but worth the time spent. Recommend reading this in one or two goes as it has complexities and a film noir sensibility that would be difficult to maintain over a long time. This would make a great movie but would need the artistry of the movie What Dreams May Come to do it justice.
Whatever my expectations, how this book went was not it. It certainly moved me out of my cozy space and kept my attention – it was truly hard to put down. I will definitely looking into more work by this author.
I rated this book as a 4 1/2 stars only because I couldn’t always understand what was happening among the two, or is it three, or is it four main characters?. Amazing concept that keeps you guessing and just when you think you know where the story is going… it veers off to “strange-land” again and goes a different direction with (really) only two or maybe 1000 of the same characters. Confused yet? Try it and hang in there because it’s worth it!!
I found this book to be original, the situation the author created was able to give logical explanations about between multi-universe travel. He raised some interesting questions about consequences of such travel. The characters were well rounded and developed.
If this hadn’t been so highly rated, I might have thought it wasn’t my kind of book in the very beginning. But because of the ratings, I continued and I’m so glad I did. Really well thought out and turned in ways I didn’t expect. Very good book.
very bizarre and original story
This book was so hard to read but I did manage to finish it. Others may like it; I found it confusing.
Did not care for this book. Too much bad language and very slow. Liked the storyline idea, but think it could have been written differently.
Very difficult to follow. Lost interest after about fifty pages
Not just a personality switch, a full blown, in your head adventure. Meeting someone while trapped in a box that shows everything about the other person is a great idea that captivated and pulled me into the story. A good, fun read.
