Running out of time.Captain Jamie Callahan is frustrated with his team constantly being at the mercy of the enemy in order to further the MDF’s goals. To make matters worse, his father’s political campaign is ramping up and Jamie’s every move is being watched by the media. He is acutely aware of all the eyes trained on him, his team, and Staff Sergeant Kyle Brannigan in particular. Meanwhile, … particular. Meanwhile, Kyle would give anything to stay in the shadows, but he refuses to leave Jamie’s side, no matter the scrutiny. Staying out of the spotlight becomes impossible when their families are threatened and vital choices about their future together can no longer be ignored.
Desperate measures.
Staff Sergeant Alexei Dvorkin and Agent Sean Delaney are enjoying their time together as a couple when Sean’s past catches up with him. As Alpha Team’s long-running mission gets derailed in the worst way possible, Alexei discovers the enemy is playing for keeps, and neither he nor Sean are in any position to beat the odds and win the game. As for Sean, he’s worried that even if they make it out alive, Alexei may never forgive him for giving into the enemy’s demands.
Stand your ground.
Manipulation is the name of the game, but Jamie is done playing by everybody else’s rules. So is the rest of Alpha Team, because if there’s one thing Jamie’s team knows? It’s that they’re a family—and you don’t mess with family unless you want to get hurt.

This is my review of the audiobook:
I love Hailey Turner’s Metahuman Files series so much! This book focuses on Kyle and Jamie’s continued need to pretend that they are only pretending to be together. What a complicated mess! Despite the lies they have to tell, their bond and complete trust in each other is unshakeable.
Then there is one of my favorite couples ever – Sean and Alexei. These two go through absolute horror in this book, and it’s impossible not to cringe and cry for them. I expect to see these two dealing with their trauma for quite a while.
The action is as crazy and chaotic as expected. Alpha Team’s dedication and devotion to each other is as strong as ever. The bad guys who make appearances are evil to the core. And the love between our heroes in each couple is beautiful, sexy, and unbreakable.
The narrator’s performance here is great, as always, though there were a couple of brief moments when Alexei lost his accent. With this large cast of characters, that is a very minor transgression. Overall, Mr. Boudreaux is amazing with his ability to give each man, woman, and child a strong and individual voice. The emotion in his voice is completely believable.
This audiobook combines an awesome story and amazing performance. Of course I recommend it, along with the entire series.
“In the Blood” was brutal. Absolutely brutal and I loved every single second of it.
I was warned beforehand how painful and angst-y this book was but wow, I was still unprepared. I cried and it broke my heart. It was glorious.
“In the Blood” is a slightly less action-packed book than the previous ones, it has a less defined plot, but at its core it’s a book about war and loss and sacrifice and deciding where you draw the line between “I’ll do what it takes” and “This is too much”.
It is told through Jamie and Kyle’s and Sean and Alexei’s POVs and while I surprisingly loved Jamie a bit more this time around, Sean and Alexei own my heart, literally. I loved them and what they went through this time was completely gut-wrenching and terrible and only cements the fact that they are perfect for one another. I also absolutely adored Kyle too: his protective streak and the love he has for his family and his brother is just *starts crying* he was also a feral and vicious badass.
There was still plenty of action but god, did some of those scenes leave me broken. This book has some really dark themes and I can only applaud Hailey Turner: she not only manages to mix humour and romance and sex and action and found family, but also tackles dark and tough themes with grace and respect and is, as usual, a tremendously talented writer and an master story-teller and plotter. I cannot wait to read the next book in a series that keeps getting better and better.
The fourth book in the Metahuman series, In the Blood needs to be read after In the Shadows. This series needs to be read in order to fully understand and appreciate it. The three, free short stories are optional, but they add extra enjoyment to an already wonderful series.
Things are heating up with Alpha Team’s mission. Things are becoming harder to manage and balance, and Alpha Team will find themselves pushed and tested beyond anything else they’ve endured. There were some really hard action and capture scenes that made me squirm, but Hailey Turner is a wonderful writer and she handled those scenes masterfully. I loved this book and I adore the team dynamics between all the characters.
Greg Bourdreaux narrated this book, like he has with all the previous books in the series. He did a wonderful job, especially since he had to narrate some sensitive and graphic scenes that required a masterful performance. I really enjoyed his narration and I loved this audiobook.
This series just keeps getting better and better. This entry was so intense at times and was a roller coaster ride from start to finish. I love how Hailey Turner has a wonderful talent in keeping the action going while building the characters and the couples. She has definitely become one of my favorite authors to read.
That was an emotional rollercoaster! And I wasn’t really prepared!!!
Why would do that to Alexei and Sean?! WHYYYY???
I was on edge throughout this book, especially the second half. Dread doesn’t even begin to cover it. I thought my heart was going to burst with all that tension. The author is MEAN.
We get both the couples in this book and I loved all the different POVs. I’m really loving this series filled with fantastic world building and such strong team bonds. The ending was pure perfection! And the sex is scorching hot. And kinky.
If you like romance and action and sci fi, definitely pick up this series. Highly recommend it and I guess I can’t wait for MORE pain?!
