Lee Palmer has been working as a U.S. Deputy Marshal in Kansas for a great deal of his life. As soon as his brother Tommy stops answering his letters, he gets extremely alarmed and decides to take matters into his own hands. When he puts a plan in place to travel to Texas, little does he know that a shattering surprise awaits him there; his brother has been found dead, next to the body of one of … of the most powerful ranchers in town. Will Lee manage to unravel the truth behind these enigmatic and shocking deaths?
While Lee is still aghast, the local sheriff declares Tommy’s death a suicide, and also accuses him of attempting robbery and murder. On the spur of the moment, the case is considered closed, which makes Lee highly suspicious. Feeling that they drag Tommy’s name through the mud, he decides to defy the law and seek vindication. Will he succeed in this lonesome yet risky mission? How will he solve this demanding riddle and clear his brother’s name?
Lee’s hazardous quest begins, having Susan Marsh and Ki’Somma, a young Cherokee medicine man, on his side. Doubts, lies, deceits, serious injuries as well as many other roadblocks will derange their endless undertaking. Will they manage to join forces triumphantly and complete this challenging mission? Or will Tommy always be remembered as a ruthless criminal?
An action-packed story, featuring complex and fascinating characters, and suspense that will leave you breathless. A must-read for fans of Western action and romance.

Lee Palmer hasn’t heard from his brother in quite some time and decides he needs to find him. He has an interesting journey including a visit from a spirit. There is a lot of spirituality in this book mostly involving his friend Ki’Somma, a Cherokee he meets along the way. When he finds his brother dead the details don’t make sense and he knows he has to find the truth. There are some characters that are a little extreme, but mostly the inhabitants of the story seem like real people. I enjoyed reading this and look forward to more of this author.
I received a free copy of this book through Amazon and I am voluntarily leaving my honest review.
Sometimes things are not what they seem
US Deputy Marshal Lee Palmer has not heard from his brother for over three months. After consulting with the head office in Dodge City, he heads off to find out what has happened to his brother. His brother is working for the owner Doyle Garret on the Double Q Ranch in Texas.
Along the trail, Lee gets off course and meets Onacona (a Cherokee Indian, White Owl). Onacona and Lee talk. Onacona gives Lee an elk necklace, and his’s wife makes Lee a meal. While sitting by the campfire, they smoke a sage pipe. During their talks together, Onacona gives Lee a map, and they talk. Onacona tells Lee that he will have help along the way and that everything comes with a price. The foxy, wiley Indian asks for Lee’s horse, Lee thinks about it and considers it a fair trade.
Lee sets off on foot, with a final gift of food prepared by Onacona’s wife.
Lee has traveled a reasonable distance on foot when the son of Onacona appears leading a painted pony, called Adasi. The son tells Lee the pony is swift. Lee nods his thanks, at least he won’t have to keep walking. They part ways.
Indian braves confronted Lee on the trail. As they talk one, “Ki’Somma,” the Sun, chooses to travel with him. Lee learns that Ki’Somma is blood-related to Onacona. (Read the book to find out how.)
What happens when Lee finally finds his brother dead at the crime scene, and the local sheriff rules it a murder-suicide? Read to find the circumstances surrounding Tommy’s death. Do you think greed might have something to do with it?
You’ll love this fierce, stubborn, rugged lawman of the west. You’ll admire the strong women in the tale and how they interact with our hero. You’ll hate the bad guys. This book is a great western novel that includes Indian spiritual influence, white and black hat characters, dancehall girls, saloons, rustling, land barons, a love interest, a posse, and of course, cows on the range.
I received this book as a free ARC book. I stayed up all night to read it in one sitting. Don’t miss this tale if you like great who-done-its that take place in the old west.
The storyline was well written and the characters were so well defined that I was totally enthralled as each and every page was turned until the very end!
