In His Eyes, by Stephenia McGee, is a captivating Civil War Romance. I enjoyed Ella and Westley’s story, watching as they go from complete strangers to finding love. Ella is a young, desperate Southern gal who has rescued a baby from his dying mother. With nowhere to go, she finds herself at Belmont Plantation and, with soldiers there seemingly harassing the help, Ella steps in and poses as the mistress. When the Yankee Major returns home, the drama begins. The author weaves an engaging story with dynamic characters, descriptive scenes, and dialogue that flows realistically and seamlessly without sounding forced. Readers who enjoy historical romance stories will not want to miss this. I listened to a complimentary copy of the audiobook and Bryn Austin does a great job narrating Ella and Westley’s story. I was not required to write a review, and the opinions are my own.
A riveting civil war story that held me captive as I read about torn loyalties, spy rings, and a love story involving two people on opposite sides of the war. Historical fiction fans do not want to miss this! I love the author’s historical notes at the end, and how fascinating history made it into her book. Stephenia McGee is one of my new favorite authors.
A good historical romance. Ella rescues a baby from his dying mother & travels to the Belmont plantation in Mississippi. She has been told she could find a wet nurse there. She poses as a Yankee officer’s widow to have a home , but when Major Remington slows up wounded her game is up. Read the twists and turns of this story.
A story that will absorb and uplift you and then tug at your heartstrings.
If you enjoy historical fiction, you’ll love this newest book by Author Stephenia H. McGee. Post civil war south, Stephenia doesn’t dodge the uncomfortable issues of the time.
A wonderful portrayal of God’s mercy, character Ella Whitaker shows His heart for those considered “less than” in society. We see that all people are worthy and loved by the Father. In His Eyes we all have value.
The characters are well developed and you’ll feel as if you know them personally as they grow both personally and spiritually. The setting is described in such a fabulous way; you’ll be able to see the homes, the town, etc. Add this book to your To Be Read list. You’ll be glad you did!
I received a complimentary copy of this book but was not required to leave a positive review.
I am a big fan of Christian novels set in the Civil War Era, and this was one of my favorites. I was captivated from the beginning. Each time I thought I knew what was coming next, the plot took a twist much to my surprise and pleasure! I loved the strong, courageous heroine, Ella, and how God worked in the lives of all the characters. I highly recommend this book.
Priceless-In His Eyes
Inspirational and thought-provoking, this story is a wonderful read! It will stay with me for a long time; one of the best books I’ve read this year. I’m sad I can only give it five stars, because it really deserves a ten! Everyone should read this, it is a meaningful experience.
I loved the refreshing style of this author-first book of hers I’ve read. The love story unfolded in such a languid way, that I was taken by surprise when it began to pulse. Definitely will read another by Stephenia McGee.
This is a awesome book without a dull moment, once I picked it up I could not put it down.
I have only read a few of Stephenia’s books so far and have loved each and every one. I look forward to continuing my reading of her books as I get them. Stephenia is a wonderful author and knows her history and does the research needed if she doesn’t, I am sure.
In His Eyes is about a young woman, Ella Whitaker, who rescues an infant from his dying, prostitute mother’s arms. The mother, with her dying breath tells Ella about a place where she may be able to find help and a wet nurse for the baby, Belmont Plantation. When she gets to Belmont Plantation there are Union soldiers there asking to see the owner of the place. Ella pretends to be a widowed Union officer’s wife and the soldiers leave.
When Ella explains things to Sibby, the house freedwoman, Sibby decides to go along with the ruse until they can think of something better to do. Sibby is also the Plantation’s wet nurse and she takes over the feeding of the infant. Ella feels Sibby is keeping something from her, but decides to let it rest for the time being.
Major Westley Remington, after a long convalescence in a Union hospital, returns home to find that he has not only a wife, but a son as well. Westley, believing Ella to be a fallen woman, agrees to keep up the story until he can decide what can be done about it.
Will Westley allow Ella and her “son” to stay at Belmont Plantation and work for him for their room and board, or will he kick them out? Is there potential for a love match between the two? What is it that Sibby is hiding and can it get them all into trouble?
The answers to these questions and a wonderful read can be had if you but pick up a copy of In His Eyes and read it. You won’t be disappointed. Enjoy!
Interesting period of history and inspirational characters.
Loved this book about people trying to survive after the Civil War – not easy for either side. Wonderful characters with great personalities!
Love a good love story that isn’t full of gratuitous sex, but instead is populated by flawed characters trying to live a Godly life.

Great book! Very well written!
I Look forward to reading the next book.
A lovely read taking us back in time. Fun characters, the usual ‘fall in love’ story, but well done. A surprise ending that I did not see coming.
Enjoyed very much, good characters, and realistic.
