The second book in the USA Today bestselling Neely Kate Mystery series, a spinoff of the New York Times bestselling Rose Gardner series.Neely Kate’s life is finally coming together. Now someone’s calling Neely Kate about her Ardmore secrets, and her sister Kate might be locked up on a psych ward, but she has a few surprises of her own. Neely Kate can’t help wondering if it’s time to come clean about her past with the people she loves.
The dead body that turns up in her basement might be the kick in the pants she needs. Because the truth will set you free, or if you’re Neely Kate, land you in hot water.

This book has some twists and I loved every one of them. Again an awesome addition to and awesome series. Does leave you a tad hanging however this is my second go round on this series and I would read it again and again.

This was a great 2nd installment of Neely Kate’s story. It gave more insight into her mindset and reasoning for the things she does. There was a new twist at almost every turn in this book that keeps you on your toes. Mystery, suspense, and a little romance keep you turning the page all the way to the end. I’m possibly even more smitten with Jed and even more confused by Kate now. I can’t wait until “Up Shute Creek” to see where some of the plots lines from this book pick up
Denise as done it again. I absolutely love the characters in Henryatta. Neely Kate just wants to be happy spending time with Joe and Jed. Unfortunately, her past and her new family don’t mesh at all. Everyone seems jealous and doesn’t want her to be happy. Can she survive crazy so she can be happy for the first time in her life?
In High Cotton is the second book the Neely Kate Mystery series and this was an easy and entertaining book to read. I enjoyed this Neely Kate book more than the first one because it involved more of the characters from the Rose Gardner series. There was a lot more excitement in this book and I enjoyed seeing Kate in the books again, even if she is only causing problems. I also enjoyed seeing Mason, although he is not the most likable character now, he has become a more interesting character. I still wish Rose was in Neely Kate’s books more even if it is not as a main character. I love Jed and I am actually starting to like Joe so it was great seeing them both more active in this book. There were so many twists and turns based on Neely Kate’s past and I am glad we got more answers in this book. I am looking forward to the next Neely Kate book and seeing how her story will be wrapped up, especially in regards to her husband.
Words can’t even describe how great this book is! I love all of Denise’s books, but In High Cotton reminded me more of the original Rose series than the current Investigation series and I’m totally obsessed! This book is full of romance, mystery, and of course a bit of humor. Denise Grover Swank writes with such emotional, and builds a story with twists and turns that I did not see coming. I can’t imagine someone not wanting to read the Neely Kate companion series. It adds so much depth and insight into Neely Kate’s character and story. Jed has also come such a long way over the course of these books and is now one of my favorites! As always, a wonderfully written, highly recommended book!
Another thrilling book by DGS! Always love reading about Neely Kate! You won’t regret this one! Always kicking butts and taking names! I love the power of NK!
This book focuses on Neely Kate and more about what is happening in her life and relationships. This book sends the reader on an emotional roller coaster with up, downs, fears, suspense, anger, happiness. The story-line is continued in this book and opens the door for it to progress. Its such a good book! I highly recommend it!
Finally got to read this book. I couldn’t put it down once I started it. I loved the book and can’t wait until November to read the next one. It does end on a cliff hanger but that doesn’t bother me because I read all of Denise’s books!
Keep you reading until the end. How a plot can be so twisted? Awesome as always.
I feel in love with Neely Kate when she first appeared in the Rose Gardner Mystery series. I love this series…the Rose Gardner and Neely Kate series…they are tied together – as they are as friends. This book focuses on Neely Kate, and loving this character I was glad to see Denise Grover Swank focus on her. One thing I love about these books is the characters grow as people…well, at least most of them do. This book is a mystery as well as a romance…and I love her boyfriend Jed…and the focus on him in this book. I recommend this book and the entire series. You really need to read the entire series in order — otherwise it will not make a lot of sense. But this series is so worth the money and the time. I cannot recommend this book or this series too much!
I absolutely loved In High Cotton! It was great to experience Neely Kate’s growth from Trailer Trash to this book. I have always liked Jed but I have an even great appreciation for him after this book. There were so many emotions I experienced through out this book. I laughed out lout, was excited, sad, so I angry I could punch a certain person, happy, and nervous. Denise Grover Swank does such an amazing job writing wonderful, well rounded characters that is easy to feel attached to everyone of her characters. She definitely did not disappoint in High Cotton. I am so excited for Up Schute Creek in November!!
OMG That’s is all i can say !! No really This is by far the most action packed book yet!! Neely Kate has had a rough life, But it’s all about to change!! This book is a page turner, I wasn’t able to put it down
That’s one big WOW! Everything I hoped for just 10 times better and much more I didn’t expect. I really love these great characters some of them love to love, some love to hate but they are so real with all their imperfections and flaws. This book was action packed non stop turns and twists that makes impossible to put it down! So emotional! Now I can’t wait for the next installment.
Great book! Neeley Kate and Joe bonding like sister and brother.
I love Neely-Kate and was so glad to get more of her story. Joe and Jed working together is a bonus. Plenty of twists and turns to keep you wondering what is happening next. I eagerly await to see where we go from here
4.5*’s
Oh My Stars and Garters – that was a whole lot of something!
My heart is still reeling over Neely Kate and her ordeal. This poor girl has been through so much. I am glad that Joe and Jed are a constant in her life, along with Rose, to help her heal.
This book picks up straight from the first, and they are still dealing with Kate and some others that are trying to make Neely Kate’s world a nightmare. So much happens and it is causing a real stink in Henryetta. With every good mystery series, some questions are answered, but so many more things are left to be discovered in the next instalment. Neely Kate has to learn how to trust again, her own instincts and men. Jed is being extremely understanding and supportive of Neely Kate being her own person. Joe is making lots of headway on this aspect too. Things I loved about this book was of course the interaction between NK and Jed – I loved his surprises. I also cherished the other characters coming into play, even Mason. I have not given up on him, I still feel he is the most stand up man with the best morals. It goes without saying that the story line is enthralling. I am not onboard with all the developments, but it is very compelling. I’m excited to see what is coming up next for this series and to hear more about The Rose Gardner Investigations.
Denise is a brilliant writer who has once again outdone herself. ‘In High Cotton’ is an action packed, non stop, amazing story revolving around Kate’s escape from the Hospital and Neely Kate’s past. Because of Kate’s note indicating she is “looking forward to my family reunion”, Rose is encouraged to go away for her weekend as previously planned. The plan is for Joe and Jed to protect Neely Kate from Kate.
Neely Kate’s story unfolds and past is revealed to Joe and Witt. Joe, Witt, and Jed work to protect Neely Kate, but it becomes unclear who is after her. Kate states she is back to protect her “baby sister” while she creates havoc by leaving clues and dead bodies. Kate disappears with the promise to find out how safe Neely Kate is from her past.
Mason turns up as a friend but is suspicious of everything including Rose’s weekend get away. He continues to ask questions until Neely Kate is certain he is no longer a friend
My review won’t do this book justice. Without giving anything away, it is really a great story. It was hard to put this book down, “one more page” was just never enough. There was a lot of intense and shocking moments throughout the book. You will find that you end up loving some characters more than you already do, while others might make the what the… list. Denise does a wonderful job keeping you captivated throughout. I can’t wait to find out what happens next.
So good!!! Neely Kate is back in her second book and it was even better than I thought it would be, which is saying something because I thought it would be incredible! NK’s first book focused on her too but having her the focus in Henryetta and in her element was really phenomenal. There is action, romance, drama, mystery and conflict, everything you want in a great book. There are a few twists and turns and the story line just became a whole lot more complicated so I can’t wait to see what happens in the next book! November can’t come soon enough!!
