If you dare sit for several hours and become totally immersed in a thriller…this book is for you. It is not only suspenseful, scary, and mysterious but also shows insight into a family full of secrets. Remember the saying about never build a house on unsolid ground…the same applies to marriages, to families, and to friends.
While you admire a home and its occupants as lucky, wealthy, happy…think again. Ava Walker is thinking over and over about her life after a horrific home invasion. Her life as she knows it, is gone. Her younger daughter, June, was home as was Robert, her husband and Ava was upstairs. The step son Gene lived over the garage but had gone off, guess he was lucky ??
The title has many meanings as Ava sees each incident leading to the invasion replayed in her head and adding new information each time.
It’s not enough that June, only twelve, is in ICU at a hospital but her life is threatened while there. Her husband is arrested and she is told they are broke and Hannah comes back from college. But there is an undercurrent with Hannah, and with Gene and her husband is hiding something.
Her friends Laurie and Dave are there to help, so it seems. The sheriff, Nate, an old boyfriend of Ava’s is trying to solve the crime but Nate seems a bit overly concerned about Ava.
Ava is one string strong broad trying her best to save her family but maybe she should worry more about herself, because everyone lies, even Ava. 5 plus stars no graphic violence just one heck of a way with images
In Her Eyes is a fast-paced, surprise on every page read. Ava Walker appears to have it all. A great husband, three children, money, and an ideal life. One night their home is invaded, and from there on out, everything Ava thought she knew about her life was totally false. I found Ava incredibly intuitive and intelligent. There’s nothing I dislike more than authors who write the main character stupid. I just want to throw a book like that, thinking “how can you be so dumb?” Ava is an exception. The book is ended with many unanswered questions, but a sequel would ruin it. Quick read–recommend.
Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for an advance copy of this book in return for an honest review.
This is a thriller you need to read! There are so many twists and turns, you’ll be dizzy! Very well-crafted and written, as you can follow along, and the plot isn’t outlandish just to try and make it work.
The central character and narrator is Ava, who is married to Robert. Their children are Hannah (away at college), June who is 12, and Gene, who is Robert’s 26-year old son from his previous marriage. Ava met Robert in college, soon became pregnant and dropped out at 19 to marry and raise a family. And life has been good to Robert and Ava, or has it? Every day Ava is thankful for June’s health, as she is a cancer survivor. Hannah is a good daughter, but Gene has been involved with drugs in the past and has no direction in life. Robert has made a gazillion dollars with software apps, and Ava seems uncomfortable with the ostentatious mansion they live in. She knows they need to do something about Gene, but Robert seems resistant. And with Robert burying himself in his work, the couple barely see other and have grown apart. Little things, compared to what lies ahead.
A violent home invasion tears the family apart. Ava and Robert are brutally beaten, and June lies in a coma. Robert becomes the prime suspect, but Ava can’t reconcile that with Robert’s nature. As she searches for answers to who and why, Ava’s world is turned upside down as she realizes she doesn’t know the people around her. And when she thinks she knows, more secrets are revealed, the plot takes a turn and everything is turned upside down once again. You really have to read to the end, and you will be kept guessing the entire time. Right down to the last line in the book, so no peeking!
Thought I had it figured out and was about to call it quits, glad I didn’t! Plot change and then again. Pick it up, start reading and remember I thought I had it worked out in the first 100 pages…an enjoyable read. Note: if you’re a fan of the hunky lawman instead of Columbia you will list yourself to sleep.
Lots of twists and turns. Sometimes we are just so blind to what is really going on.
Perhaps never a classic, but a really good escape read.
The very best thriller I have read in quite sometime. Did not put it down from start to finish!
I kept wanting to come back to this book
A good romance with a great underlying story. I want to start a journal now.
This book is based upon a journal that is handed down from mother to daughter over generations. There is no rhyme or reason when it is written in or about the subject matter. When Lily finds the journal in her mother’s writing desk, she immediately understands its significance. She reads it with the reverence the journal requires.
Soon, she is sharing the stories with her daughter. Having moved with her children back into the farmhouse of her childhood, Lily wonders if making such a rash decision after their negative behaviors come to light. As she reads more of the journal, both of her kids become closer to Mack, the renter of the farmhouse. Could she too be ready to open her heart to Mack after the devastation her husband’s infidelity caused?
This novel provides the outstanding writing Carolyn Brown brings to the table with the idea of what we leave our heirs in out writing.
I received an ARC from Montlake Romance through NetGalley. This in no way affects my opinion or rating of this book. I am voluntarily submitting this review.
Sarah Alderson had me hooked from the moment I picked up “In Her Eyes”.
What a cast of characters this novel had…From Ava to Robert to June to Hannah and so many more….. they were all instrumental in the story. I truly couldn’t tell you my favorite.
I was in awe of the books ending! The twists and turns along the way we’re immense, so many I just never saw coming.
This was my first novel by this author.
If you want to read a thriller that you will not be able to put down, then this book is perfect for you!
I highly recommend “In Her Eyes”! Looking forward to the next Sarah Alderson Book! Sign me up!
I received the ARC of this book from the author in exchange for fair and honest review.
Well, well, well. Sarah Alderson you’ve restored my faith that thrillers can indeed be thrilling. I’ve had some let downs recently, but not with In Her Eyes. Sure those other thrillers had some action, but In Her Eyes started with action and kept it going. And besides the first scenes that leave you wanting more, Alderson had twist after twist. And that final turn left me thinking about the books for days.
If you look closer at the story you could start picking it apart. There are a lot of coincidences coming together and that may be hard for others to look past. But for me, I let the story carry me away and just enjoyed where it took me. There have been suspense and thrillers that I’ve read where too many unbelievable things had to happen in order for the story to flow or come together. But all of the things happening in In Her Eyes were believable enough in this day and age that I could see it happening.
I really don’t want to give anything away, so just purchase the book and take time afterwards to appreciate that (hopefully) your life is nothing like those in the book!
Sarah Alderson has hit her stride with In Her Eyes. I thoroughly enjoyed Friends Like These so was anxious to read her latest. It did not disappoint. In Her Eyes is a solid, original thrill-ride domestic thriller. It begins with a nice family who seem to have it all. Then they experience the nightmare of a home invasion gone horribly wrong. This one grabs you early on and increases in pace until the very end!
A fantastic thrill-ride the whole way through. Sarah Alderson sets a steady mood of trepidation and mystery surrounding a well-paced plot. Overall, the characters are dynamic and well-crafted. Some of the cast does get favored more in expansion than the others which results in a minor disconnect to those characters specifically, leaving some open-ended questions. However, this is trivial and rather than pulling from the plot, it seems to create more of an emotional attachment to the primary characters. Experiencing Alderson’s foreshadowing and the antagonist fruition come to light is entertaining and that tiny fissure of doubt she places right there at the end…genius. A great novel for book clubs everywhere.
