National Bestseller On November 15, 1959, in the small town of Holcomb, Kansas, four members of the Clutter family were savagely murdered by blasts from a shotgun held a few inches from their faces. There was no apparent motive for the crime, and there were almost no clues. As Truman Capote reconstructs the murder and the investigation that led to the capture, trial, and execution of the … and execution of the killers, he generates both mesmerizing suspense and astonishing empathy. In Cold Blood is a work that transcends its moment, yielding poignant insights into the nature of American violence.

As a reader, I started this book with all the spoilers. I knew who was killed, I knew who was caught, etc. And yet. And yet this book kept me up at night. It’s the gorgeous writing, the pacing, the fact that the book makes you…uncomfortable. I don’t know how else to describe it. Capote humanizes evil men to the point that you…sympathize with …
I’ve read this book so many times, I just can’t count.
It always intrigues me when I read someone has read a book again and again.
Especially, when there are millions of book selections available at your fingertips. But, I see how it works. Just try opening up Mr. Capote’s book. You may have read it before but his writing is so gripping. A …
I know this book has received rave reviews, but I didn’t like it, and I’m a huge true crime fan.
One of the finest examples of creative non-fiction in existence.
This the first true crime book that I ever read and it made such an impact on me that I’ve never forgotten it. It’s a horrific tale of the murder of one family that will chill you to your bones.
This story is chilling.
I read this book when it was first published and I still think about it. A very powerful book!
This is my least favorite Capote book but it seems to be big with many people. I would suggest Other Voices, Other Rooms, or the collection of short stories that seem to meld together in Music for Chameleons. Capote did not have a large body of works.
This book was interesting to say the least. I was 16 when I read this, and it was a little haunting. Overall, I found the story interesting, but personally, I’m not much of a fan of the author. But that’s besides the point. I would recommend this novel for a number of reasons.
not entirely accurate, but still enough to curdle your blood
Truman Capote made a name for himself after this true crime non fiction book. I read this book twenty years ago, and still remember it vividly. All readers of true crime genre who haven’t read this – will want to add to their list of must reads.
In a class by itself. The best true-crime book ever written,
I read this alone as a teenage girl in a remote cabin during an incredible thunderstorm. Big mistake, but the venue did add to the book’s staying power in my pushing 68 year old memory. Lock your doors and leave the lights blazing!
Totally spell-binding, tragic story.
One of the best non- fiction books
Because it was a true-crime story, I read it because it was supposed to be such a great book. I hate to say that I found it only “okay.” For the time period it came out, I guess it was horrific that something like that could happen. I’d say it was a really mild story compared to the true crime spree the Manson family carried, which was also …
One of the best books i have ever read.
Classic. A true story that reads more like fiction by an American master.
Riveting! Just horrifying! I couldnt put the book down..it was a grab me read and not let go. Still thought about this book days and even months after i read it. Whooo..so can happen anywhere.
I’ve long been a fan and avid reader of Mr. Capote. This was a true story that is frightening! EXCELLENTLY WRITTEN AND RESEARCHED! Don’t be afraid to read this, just don’t read it before bed!!
