Every time Bill Bryson walks out the door, memorable travel literature threatens to break out. This time in Australia. His previous excursion along the Appalachian Trail resulted in the sublime national bestseller A Walk in the Woods. In A Sunburned Country is his report on what he found in an entirely different place: Australia, the country that doubles as a continent, and a place with the … continent, and a place with the friendliest inhabitants, the hottest, driest weather, and the most peculiar and lethal wildlife to be found on the planet. The result is a deliciously funny, fact-filled, and adventurous performance by a writer who combines humor, wonder, and unflagging curiousity.
Despite the fact that Australia harbors more things that can kill you in extremely nasty ways than anywhere else, including sharks, crocodiles, snakes, even riptides and deserts, Bill Bryson adores the place, and he takes his readers on a rollicking ride far beyond that beaten tourist path. Wherever he goes he finds Australians who are cheerful, extroverted, and unfailingly obliging, and these beaming products of land with clean, safe cities, cold beer, and constant sunshine fill the pages of this wonderful book.
Australia is an immense and fortunate land, and it has found in Bill Bryson its perfect guide.

Any thing by Bill Bryson is worth reading!!
Our favorite Bryson book!
This wonderful book is filled with cocktail tidbits to astound your friends. I just loved it…. and if you want to solve a mystery in it.. Find out what trees need Bauxite… Didn’t I tell you you could eat out for a few months on the information…
It’s worth your time. It pays back in solid information about his fabulous country…
It is about Australia
Bill Bryson is always entertaining. However, this one could have been shorter without losing anything.
One of the funniest books I ever read…before and after I visited the continent. Kept me up late at night laughing so hard that I cried.
I always enjoy a Bill Bryson travel book. Also recommend Notes from a Small Island, about the years he lived in England. Didn’t do so well with the history book, can’t remember the exact title. It dragged, and I drifted off. I think he first got my attention with A Walk in the Woods, which was fun reading.
Let’s face it, Bill Bryson’s writing is hilarious, and in no place more so than when he
exposes the absurdities and wonders of life in Australia—a place where it seems every animal is trying to kill you.
Another winner from Bill Bryson!
About Australia.
This book will make you laugh out loud as you read it. At the same time it is highly informative. A most enjoyable and entertaining read!
This is probably my favorite book about Australia. If you ever have a chance to visit, this is a must read. It is funny, wild, crazy, and informative, just like Australia, itself.
I have gone back to read parts of this book several times. I laughed out loud at the tale of his off the beaten path hike. Bill Bryson has us there with him as he travels.
Very enjoyable! A great introduction to Australia!!
After I read this book, i just HAD to read all of his other books.
I love this book. Bill takes you for a tour Australia that is funny, entertaining and informative AND SCARY. On one hand he makes you want to go there to see for yourself, and on the other hand you find yourself perfectly happy to be sitting in your nice safe home just reading about some of the things you can run into in Australia. I read this …
I love anything by Bill Bryson
Bill Bryson has plenty of very funny travel adventure books, bit this is one of his very best!
Typical Bryson storytelling with a topic made interesting through his witty perspective that careens from droll to sardonic to simply hilarious. It will certainly make you wish you had a few months to travel the path that he did to write this.
