What should be a cozy and fun-filled weekend deep in the English countryside takes a sinister turn in Ruth Ware’s suspenseful, compulsive, and darkly twisted psychological thriller.
Leonora, known to some as Lee and others as Nora, is a reclusive crime writer, unwilling to leave her “nest” of an apartment unless it is absolutely necessary. When a friend she hasn’t seen or spoken to in years unexpectedly invites Nora (Lee?) to a weekend away in an eerie glass house deep in the English countryside, she reluctantly agrees to make the trip. Forty-eight hours later, she wakes up in a hospital bed injured but alive, with the knowledge that someone is dead. Wondering not “what happened?” but “what have I done?”, Nora (Lee?) tries to piece together the events of the past weekend. Working to uncover secrets, reveal motives, and find answers, Nora (Lee?) must revisit parts of herself that she would much rather leave buried where they belong: in the past.
In the tradition of Paula Hawkins’s instant New York Times bestseller The Girl On the Train and S. J. Watson’s riveting national sensation Before I Go To Sleep, this gripping literary debut from UK novelist Ruth Ware will leave you on the edge of your seat through the very last page.

Great book
A well done thriller
This book had me reading late into the night, desperate to find out how it would end. Simply couldn’t put it down!
I enjoyed In a dark, dark wood even though it was predictable. I don’t have some of the problems with it that others have mentioned. Such as, people still being messed up over a teenage relationship, and adults thinking someone would care about what they did 10 years ago. There are many broken people. Everyone deals with things differently. There are adults that try to use your past against you or throw it in your face. A lot of people don’t seem to be able to accept that other people don’t feel or react to things the way they would. I’m open to reading more from Ruth Ware.
I loved the main character, hated the antagonists. I found myself very pissed off at some of the “games” the antagonist plays – mean girl stuff. It has a cataclysmic ending.
Not very mysterious, at all.
This book was a fun, fast read, although I didn’t love it as I have this author’s other books. But I would still recommend it.
This was my first introduction to Ruth Ware. I think it’s safe to say that after buying all her other books, I’m a fan. lol I found this story both tragic and very realistic. I’ve also heard it’s going to be made into a movie, can’t wait for that.
I don’t want to give away anything, so I’m just sharing my opinion rather than actual details of the story. It’s much better to go in blind and just let it happen. Trust me.Ruth Ware
In a Dark, Dark Wood
Like all of Ware’s books, this one sucked me in and didn’t let go until I’d devoured the last word. I couldn’t get enough of this twisted story. A new favorite!
this is what I wanted from Girl on the Train
Always love anything she writes
Slow moving
My first time reading a Ruth Ware book. Know this got mixed reviews and I can see why. There are many reasons why I kept reading one I needed to know what happened.
Two I was feeling this book. And the mystery behind these characters. I was definitely wrong about the plot twist. Which the author did that to throw us off. I would read another Ruth Ware book. Would I recommend yes I would.
About book-
Nora hasn’t seen or heard from her high school friend in ten years. Until she gets email that her friend is getting married and having a hen get together. And wants Nora to come. Nora is keeping a secret that she been holding onto for 10 years.
Another great read from Ruth Ware. Have already started ‘Turn the Key’.
I was so disappointed in this book. I wanted to like it and I did actually finish it but I was angry when getting to the end, there was no pay off – I felt like I had wasted valuable reading time on a book that built suspense with no climax that was worth it.
2.5 stars rounding down. In a Dark, Dark Wood was a very fast read but the characters were all very one-dimensional and they had the emotional intelligence of an immature middle-schooler (combined). There was the absolutely rude lesbian, the shallow Queen Bee, her over-emotional clinging lackey, the can’t-get-over-my-high-school-boyfriend recluse, the lactating mom (by far the smartest one in the book), and the token gay friend. The beginning of the novel was marred by the characters but the mystery kept my interest – what did happen at the bachelorette weekend? Once the novel revealed what happened that fateful night, the plot just kind of unraveled and the motives of the characters seemed far-fetched.
From a writer who rapidly became a favorite, here is a book inhabited by real people doing real things in an increasingly real place. Invited to spend some vacation time in a remote modern mansion, the glass front of which looks out at vast forests, a group of old friends are snowed in together. That’s when the cold begins seeping in. That’s when motives are questioned. That’s when everyone starts wondering whom to trust. Things become increasingly suspenseful and terrifying as the story unfolds, and Ruth Ware gives the reader an intense, compelling ride through a dark, dark wood. Strongly recommended. / Gene Stewart
Talk about an amazing twisted plot. This was a masterfully written book. I was on pins and needles from the beginning to end.
Who would ever expect a bachelorette party (hen party) to be this twisted.
Revenge is definitely a word to describe this book.
But who is actually at the receiving end and who is dishing it out.
I’ll be in a book hangover after this one. I highly recommend it to anyone who loves a great mystery, loves trying to figure the pieces out, and loves being blown away with the final reveal.
I love books that leave me wanting more…. kudos to Ruth Ware, you Rocked it!!!!!
Once again Ruth Ware didn’t disappoint. The book was creepy in a good way.
This book was so twisted, but that’s why I LOVED it. I wouldreccomend it to anyone looking for a really unreliable narrator, and a good twist
