This is a fast-paced read that almost rates a 5. Two things change that: the letters that Neve never reads but the reader does…seems like a cheat — the book would have been stronger without them… (no spoiler for those who haven’t read the book) and the fact that I was pretty sure that a couple of the characters were up to no good very early on. All that said, love the writing style and I had my nose buried in this book from the time I started it.
I listened to this book on Audible. The Narrator did a wonderful job with the characters. This story has a lot of twists and turns.
Couldn’t connect to the main character whatsoever. Not a bad storyline, but felt very meh about this book.
Loved this book, love this author
This book had potential which was not delivered. I would not recommend this book.
This is a clever, engaging blend of modern and gothic. Neve is the feisty but feckless heroine, prone to alcohol-fuelled one night stands and spending money she doesn’t have. All to the annoyance of her sister and brother-in-law with whom she lodges after the break-up of a relationship.
Then things get gothic. One wintry night, she encounters a mysterious wraithlike woman on Waterloo Bridge. In the moments before she leaps to her death, the stranger bequeaths her cottage to Neve.
In a deft flick back to the modern, we see Neve, drunk again, insulting her boss and walking out on her job shortly afterwards. As persona non grata with just about everyone she knows, Neve decides to hole up in Cornwall in the mystery cottage. What has she got to lose?
From this point on the gothic creepiness goes into overdrive. The dark wood, the gloomy cottage and the bleak weather all contribute to the gut-tightening sense of foreboding. To write all this in natural, smooth language without any overwriting is a huge achievement. We are in for an assured but exhilarating ride with this author.
This is not your average mystery.
Didn’t find the main character especially likable, but couldn’t put this book down.
4.5 stars. I really enjoyed this book. Full disclosure though: I read it while alone at home in the dark (which may have upped the creepy factor to some extent!). With that said though, I was pretty well hooked from the beginning.
Neve and her sister Lou couldn’t be more different. Lou seems to have her life together pretty well (husband, kids, nice home, etc.). Neve is somewhat of a mess: recently single, no place to live, good possibility she’ll be unemployed soon. What else could complicate her life more? Perhaps a woman giving her an envelope on a cold night with an ominous warning of sorts and then hurling herself into the river?
I don’t want to give anything away so I’ll stop with the summary there. I felt this book was very well written. I didn’t even care for Neve that much (which can sometimes be a deal breaker for me) but that was irrelevant in this book. I just had to keep reading. I had no idea who to be suspicious of. Quite frankly by the end I didn’t trust anyone. There was definitely a creepiness factor that kept me on edge. Several times I actually got goosebumps while reading!
Great ending and well done overall!
Interesting twist when the recipient of the cottage discovers that she was adopted and the donor is her sister.
I enjoyed this book but have to say I found the ending kind of disappointing… the book was suspenseful and led me to expect a somewhat clever ending..I found the ending to be mundane and unrealistic..
The story was good with interesting characters. Not an easy to figure out who was good and who was bad. Ending was VERY abrupt. If the ending was better (it actually says “The End”) I would have rated it higher.
I was intrigued by this book I read it very quickly and I enjoyed it a lot who is very unpredictable and quite the page Turner
Couldn’t put this down great book as always from Cass Green!!
The book just seemed monotone. I kept waiting for something big to happen and it never did.
Definitely a page turner! The end was nothing like what I was expecting!
very good book with a twisty end
What an awful book. The main character was pathetic; the story very implausible.
The protagonist was a completely relatable character chock full of personality flaws like the rest of us! The story built slowly, somewhat like a snowball. But when it got to the bottoms of the hill, what a finish! I liked this book from the first twisted situation, and I look forward to more from this author.
Pointless and predictable.
