This story is about a woman named Mia, who is a special needs teacher at a private school, who goes out to a coffee bar called The Drip on the evening of her 30th birthday, with her crazy, best friend, Dacia. Dacia and Mia have been friends since they were children, and are very close. While sitting at the coffee bar, Mia notices a very handsome man with beautiful blue eyes, who happens to be alone, and that he’s ordered black coffee just like she has, which is unusual in this coffee bar. Most of the people there look like they’re still in high school and order lattes or expressos. Mia starts up a conversation with this beautiful man, and finds out that his name is Wesley Marsden. She notices that Wesley actually looks her in the eyes when he speaks to her, which other guys never do, and she is impressed by his sense of humor and intelligence, too. When Wesley asks Mia about herself, she tells him that she is a special education teacher who works with the lowest functioning kids in the school, which very much impresses Wesley, and he asks Mia more questions about her students. Mia is then very impressed with Wesley because most guys are not at all interested in her job, and they don’t understand why she would want to work with special ed children. When Wesley says that he has to leave the coffee bar suddenly, he asks Mia if she will see him again the next day, which she agrees to do and so gives Wesley her phone number.
Wesley and Mia go on several more dates, and Mia soon learns that Wesley has suffered with social anxiety disorder since he was a young boy. Wesley and Mia quickly become romantically involved, and spend much more time together. After Wesley visits Mia’s class one day before he picks her up to take her to lunch, he shares with her that his sister, Annabelle, who is the youngest child in the family, was born with Down’s Syndrome, and that they are very close. Wesley also has a younger brother named Kane, who is Annabelle’s twin, and that Kane is one minute older than her.
As the story progresses, Mia and Wesley fall in love. Wesley shares a tragic story that happened to his family, that is still effecting his life, and could put their future together in jeopardy.
Impressions of You (Book 1) is the debut novel from Christopher Harlan, and I really enjoyed it. I loved the characters of Mia and Wesley, especially Wesley! Wesley is described as tall, dark, very handsome, with blue eyes, and very intelligent with a great sense of humor – what more could a girl want?!? I would recommend this book to anyone that enjoys romance novels, and I’m looking forward to the next book in the series!
This story pulls on the heartstrings non stop, this story is one that surrounds serious topics blended in with a romance. What starts out with a basic cup of black coffee brews into so much more and we go deep down into the past of Wesley and learn so much about what made him the man he is today. Mia is such a passionate caring woman that gives her all into her work, the connection between her and Wes is instantaneous. This story had be holding my hand to my heart as I was reading and other moments I was grabbing for a tissue. Although I personally haven’t experienced anything as they have, the details help me to feel as though I could have. I feel for these characters as though I know them personally. I’ve heard this is a debut from this author and I find that hard to believe because it all flowed so seamlessly. Well done and I cannot wait to read more in this series as well as other work from this author. This is my unbiased and voluntary review.
