I thought I knew who the killer was but I was wrong .
Carla Neggers is one of the best at writing complex plots with cryptic clues & assorted events that don’t seem to be but end up being related. A tough prosecutor goes to visit her daughter for her birthday & disappears. A linguist is killed in London by a rifle. A woman overdoses in London after just returning from the US while her husband stays behind. All seem to be unrelated coincidences but all end up being part of a coverup. Can Emma & Colin figure out what’s going on? There isn’t any proof, just instincts that something isn’t right.
Ms. Neggers has the ability to take a series of improbable events & ties them to a single plot. Her characters are tough & tenacious in their jobs but warm & loving in their personal lives. Every Sharpe & Donovan story gives the reader more insight into their wonderful families & their married life together. This is another fast paced thriller from a terrific writer!
I thought it was a perfect addition to the Sharpe and Donovan Series. It showed the love of the main characters during a difficult time. It continued to bring previous characters to light in Maine, Ireland, and England. And, as always, a who done for these FBI agents and acquaintances. Can’t wait for the next book in the series.
When I read the first Emma and Colin book, I thought that it was going to be a pretty good series. With each book, I realize that this is more than a good series. I have fallen in love with Emma, Colin and the rest of the crew. The newlyweds stumble upon another mystery and several lives are in danger. Emma is invited to a birthday party that ended in the search for a Federal prosecutor and maybe involves art forgery. Loved it.
art-fraud, art-theft, murder, international-crime-and-mystery, law-enforcement, suspense
Great suspense plus knitting! Art fraud, several murders, FBI and MI5 make for very interesting stuff, but it’s the interweaving of plots, important characters, and the escalating tension to find the motives as well as learning more about the interpersonal relationships of the multiple essential characters that drives the reader to abandon other tasks and keep on reading. The publisher’s blurb gives some ideas but really can’t convey the intensity of this very well written mystery. The romantic aspects are development of already established couples, not the seeking variety. There is no erotica either.
I requested and received a free ebook courtesy of NetGalley and the publisher. Many thanks!
Impostor’s Lure (Kindle) by Carla Neggers …only five stars that is all I can give this..not fair.. Thanks to #NetGalley for letting me preview this book. Emma Sharpe and Colin Donovan are my favorites and their stories always have so many twists and turns.. I feel like I’m part of the story and it’s great to touch base will their family members and friends. This was another great one and I can’t wait for the next Sharpe and Donovan book. The “banshee” is still giving me chills…
Rcvd an ARC at no cost to author..(netgalley) It has been a while since I read a Carla Neggers book and I have to say I wasn’t crazy about this book. This apparently is the 8th in this series and I am going to tell you, you probably should read the first books to be able to get intrigued in this one. I never did get excited their were too many characters too many cities just a lot of stuff and it drove me crazy. The premise is the prosecutor Thamara is worried about the people her daughter got involved in and decides she wants to find out more from her friend Yank and his associates newly wed Emma and Connor, she sets up a lunch date to discus the situation but get kidnaps before. Then the chaos ensues..
Love her books, and they way she continues with the characters in each book.
Great read!!
I enjoy a story with lots of Irish lore woven into it. This one doesn’t disappoint. The Donovan and Sharpe families have lots of good adventures, including this one.
A lot of characters introduced in the first few chapters hard to keep track at first but gets easier. After that a really good read.
Have read all in the series and can’t wait for each new adventure.
Carla’s books are always packed with lots of Characters and intrigue… and you are always trying to figure out… who is it this time?
Always liked her stories, read it years ago.
Really kept my attention.
Not one of her better books. Too many characters and too much jumping around. I finally jumped to the end to only find out that I had guessed the villain in the first half of the book. She is a better author than what this book shows.
All of the characters and back story lines along with jumping back and from between the US and England kept me very confused. The story line itself moved very slowly and I soon lost interest. I love the premise of the book and would love an opportunity to re-read the book if there is a re-write.
I’ve heard of Carla Neggers but I don’t recall every having read any of her books which is why I took the opportunity to review this title. Regrettably, this book is not for me.
Touted as a standalone, I can accept the book does tick this box, however it does so by referencing so many – too many – previous characters and their backstories that I found it overwhelming. In fact, I started reading this book several times before pushing beyond the 5% mark because of the tidal wave of characters and locations we are subjected to.
The pacing of the book is quite slow, and while this does not bother me, it is an issue when you reach near the 60% mark and precious little has happened. Where is the action? Where is the mystery? Why are these supposedly experienced law enforcement officers focusing on the mundane and seemingly irrelevant? And it’s at around this point in the book that I gave up. Reading it felt like a chore to even reach this point and whatever desire I had to finish the book for the sake of it petered out completely.
About the only think that held my interest was the author’s ability to provide us with interesting descriptions of locales through the eyes of the characters.
