I think this book might have the most beautiful cover of all the Jenny B. Jones books I could find on Amazon. I was therefore quite sad that it wasn’t available in paperback on the Dutch site. Luckily it was available on the German site and since there were a few more books only available there eventually the shipping costs became worth it. I was originally gonna start another book this morning, but this book screamed quite loudly.
When I finished it I had the tears rolling down my cheeks. I was prepared for that, since it happened to the previous two books I read by Jones too, but it’s still amazing that Jones manages to write touching book after touching book. I’m now only more excited to read the rest of the Katie Parker series. As if that was even possible. In this book faith, which was way more important in the other books, takes a backseat, but it seems that it wasn’t what made the positive difference with other contemporary YA’s, like I thought.
Jones simply knows how to write characters, how to let them suffer and grow, how to let them mess up and learn, how to let them fall and stand up again. Both main characters in this book didn’t have an easy life. She was mistreated by her own mother, he grew up acting as a parent for his younger siblings because no one else did. They both had visible and invisible scars to tell their story and they both needed each other to discover who they could really be.
And how beautiful they were as people! I loved how they both had an edge, how their interactions weren’t always perfect or romantic, how they both dared to tell the other what they really thought and really felt. As our heroine had to learn, someone who fits you perfectly on paper, might not be the someone you really need to be yourself, to discover your hidden talents. Maybe so called perfect people are not perfect for you.

Gran lectura.

I cannot remember how I came across this book, but I’m grateful about it!
This has a really funny writing and I loved it. The characters have amazing trades and interesting personality. They are not cliche and that’s refreshing and great.
Harper is amazing and her personality is interesting. Riley is more than a football star cliche.
I justo loved this book!
A predictable story, but cute nonetheless. Harper’s dad is a college football coach, and Ridley wants to go to that college to play football, but his grades need improving. Harper, who has already tutored some of the football players, agrees to help Ridley on the condition that he also helps her – in the world of romance. Harper has a crush on a fellow band member, but hasn’t had a boyfriend and has no idea how to express her interest to him. That’s where Ridley comes in.
This was a cute story, and I loved Harper’s dog stealing ways. An enjoyable read!
I wish I’d snatched this book up when it was first released.
To be honest, I wish I’d been able to read it 20 years ago, when I needed it most.
It’s not often that a YA novel strikes a chord with me, since I’m–ahem–older than the target demographic, but as a child from a broken home… this one truly resonated with me. That is to say, I was completely moved by it. The theme, the characters, the dialogue–all of it.
I just want to use this review space to thank the author for telling stories that involve HARD things. Like affairs. Divorce. Reconciliation. I needed to read something portraying this kind of hope back when I was a teenager in the midst of my own familial disaster. My parents didn’t make it, but seeing how the characters in this story did, healed a little piece of me that’s still broken after 20 years.
And that’s amazing.
You won’t go wrong any time you pick up a book penned by Jenny B. Jones. No author can match her whit and clever character.
Wow! What an intricate, emotional story that won’t let you go. As usual with Jenny Jones it’s hilarious while at the same time deeply portraying real life challenges that develop character in her people. This one was especially deep and heartfelt. Great, great story.
As a child of divorced parents, I thought this was a very real and emotionally accurate depiction of a family adjusting to a new norm. I would highly recommend it.
I don’t think there is a better YA Christian writer than Jenny B. Jones. What a wordsmith! Her dialogue and internal character dialogue are tops in the field.
This was a sweet, funny romance about first love that I couldn’t put down. If you like books like this check out The Almost Boyfriend (The Boyfriend Series Book 2)
Man do I love me some Jenny B Jones! this book was SO good. Her books always make me laugh out loud…and send screen snap shots to my BFF…my poor friend got so many today! loved it! I was supposed to be studying to teach my class tonight at the prison, and I COMPLETELY abandoned my responsibilities to finish this book. Now I’ve got bupkis prepared, and the poor guys are gonna get the leftovers. Now that’s a sign of a good book! LOL I’ve got 20 minutes before I have to leave to try to BS my way through 2 hours of “teaching.” Thanks for that Jenny!
