Marine Corps veteran Gabe Martinelli went above and beyond the call of duty and was left with only a shell of his former life. After his marriage crumbled under the weight of his tormented mind, his only remaining companion is his faithful service dog, Gunner, who never leaves Gabe’s side while he navigates civilian life as the owner of a local construction company. Surly and isolated, he mostly … mostly keeps to himself, until he’s approached by his nosy neighbors to work on a building project for a unique new organization in his hometown of New Orleans—a charity that happens to serve victims of atrocities he encountered during his time at war, but wasn’t able to save.
Ruth Washburn is a widowed woman of faith who has dedicated her life to rescuing women from human-trafficking. In the aftermath of her husband’s death, she has found purpose and hope in aiding survivors to create new lives for themselves. When one rehabilitated survivor approaches her to head a new non-profit organization dedicated to the victims that hold a special place in Ruth’s heart, she doesn’t have to think twice before pulling up her roots and moving to New Orleans.
After an accidental meeting that resulted from their very friendly dogs, Gabe and Ruth learn they’ll be working together on the charity, and they develop an unexpected understanding and companionship based on the one thing they have in common—marriages that didn’t pan out the way they’d hoped.
Unfortunately for Gabe, after being thrust into countless intimate situations with headstrong and candid Ruth, he realizes his prolific tendency for evasiveness isn’t going to fly with her. As they continue their work with the charity, the ghosts of Gabe’s past start to rear their ugly heads and threaten to shut him down completely. Ruth makes it her personal mission to reach for the wounded warrior as he begins to drown, only to realize that the battle scars of the heart are sometimes too deep to heal.

Well done Katherine. I look forward to more!
This book has a captivating storyline that grabs you right from the start keeping you engrossed and on edge throughout the whole book!
Intensely sensuous, wrought with emotion, and so well written that I absolutely could not put it down!
It is complete with its very own HEA, however, secondary characters are interconnected with other books in the series.
Each book can be read as a standalone or they can be read in order of publication for maximum pleasure *wink, wink*

Reading this book is like being on an emotional roller coaster. It was a marvelously written book that made you feel like you’re right there in it with them. I absolutely could not get enough of it. I voluntarily read and reviewed this book in exchange for a free copy.
As the story continues, Gabe, a veteran with pretty severe PTSD, is working the construction side of his friends new project for abused woman. Ruth, a widow, is the new Director for this project and her first visit to New Orleans where they do things different. They are really fighting their attraction to either other, but it’s not working too well especially when they are butting heads. They have to put their baggage in perspective to go forward. Nicely written. A little bit of sluggish start but worth the read, so stick with it.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced reader copy of this book
Two damaged people come together as they work to help women who have been affected by sex trafficking. Out of this dark topic comes a very sweet romance as the two main characters learn to trust themselves and their own feelings along with learning how to love and risk their hearts again. Very well written with likeable characters and not to forget the icing on the cake – a dog! I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.

Gabe is a war veteran suffering from PTSD which led to his wife leaving him because she could not deal with it. Ruth lost her husband after being married for only 4 years. She followed her heart in joining Skye realizing her dream of helping women get out of human trafficking and similar situations. This is where she met Gabe and there is an instant attraction between them. They started a friendship and he learns that not everybody runs away when he needs them or when the going gets tough. But Ruth is not ready to face the possibility of a new love and struggles to accept that she does not have to go through life alone. Gabe needs to learn that he can open himself to love and learn to trust again. This is such an emotional story and I could not turn the pages fast enough. Katherine L. Evans is a great writer who just knows how to make her characters come to life with such real emotions. I just love her writing.
