In If I Can’t Have You, bestselling author Gregg Olsen and co-author Rebecca Morris investigate one of the 21st Century’s most puzzling disappearances and how it resulted in the murder of two children by their father.Every once in a great while a genuine murder mystery unfolds before the eyes of the American public. The tragic story of Susan Powell and her murdered boys, Charlie and Braden, is … murdered boys, Charlie and Braden, is the only case that rivals the Jon Benet Ramsey saga in the annals of true crime. When the pretty, blonde Utah mother went missing in December of 2009 the media was swept up in the story with lenses and microphones trained on Susan’s husband, Josh. He said he had no idea what happened to his young wife, and that he and the boys had been camping in the middle of a snowstorm.
Over the next three years bombshell by bombshell, the story would reveal more shocking secrets. Josh’s father, Steve, who was sexually obsessed with Susan, would ultimately be convicted of unspeakable perversion. Josh’s brother, Michael, would commit suicide. And in the most stunning event of them all, Josh Powell would murder his two little boys and kill himself with brutality beyond belief.

This book provides more than the two minute clip elaborating on the behind the investigation of Jason Powell and his twisted family. This true story is a page turner looking for the answer regarding Jason’s wife, where is Susan Powell?
A well-written true crime book that outlined the unfortunate case of Susan Powell. There were plenty of details in the book, even though there were some graphic parts of the crime scene, they were described in a way that made it easier to take in. It was terrible what happened to Susan and her children. The father was a monster for sure, and I am glad that he was eventually arrested even though it seemed the authorities took their time.
The narration in this audiobook was different from other true crime books in that Susan had her own “voice” by giving a different narrator than the one narrating the information about the crime. I thought that was an interesting little detail, and it made it easier to follow along.
This book was given to me for free at my request and I provided this voluntary review.
This book was very good, although the story was very sad. It’s hard to read about the grief a family has to suffer unnecessarily. Susan’s grace and kindness were portraited accurately in this book.
A monster of a father that ruined so many lives and caused such pain and heartache.
Good writing, horrible husband.
Kept my interest. Tragic story of love gone wrong. Makes you wonder why people do the things they do.
Having followed this real life case in the papers, this book takes you behind the scenes. It allows you to follow along u til you see all the details & horror come to life. Your heart breaks for the innocent two little boys. It is a book you can’t put down & wish you could change the ending. Real life is not always a fairy tale or how it appears from the outside.
If I Can’t Have You: Susan Powell, Her Mysterious Disappearance, and the Murder of Her Children was a good true crime story by Gregg Olsen and Rebecca Morris. This true crime story follows the disappearance of Susan Powell and the murder of her children. This is the tragic case that not only entangled this family but also Josh Powell’s father Steve. Josh had to fight for custody of his son’s Charlie and Braden. One day during a supervised visit he killed his boys and himself. This is a tragic story that there are still some unanswered questions to.
Well written and captivating story of family tragedy.
A crazy, twisted, true story of a family and how passing on that behavior resulted in several horrible deaths.
Very interesting facts regarding this case.
Nonfiction, crime study
Ann Rule wrote great, in depth, books about the people who think they are above the law.
True story that left you wondering why!! Why do people do what they do? Are they born evil or are they created? So tragic and unnecessary to kill your wife, let alone to kill your own children. Horrible and he almost got away with it!
Too much detail especially knowing the end while you’re reading.
A good read
It keeps your interest. The ending is very tragic. Overall a very good book.
What an evil person her was.
I felt that parts were drawn out far too long. It was an ok book.
This was a okay book. Seemed like it dragged on a bit. I remember when this happened. But could have moved a little faster.
