Rating: MA: mature-reader [->17]: erotic sex, depravity, debauchery, trigger warnings for violence toward women and children, kidnappings, murder, scandal, mutilation, murder, blackmail, murder, treachery, ghosts, did I mention murder? Angst level: medium-high: Book 6/7 in the psychic Wherlocke, paranormal series: Source: purchased: I had previously read this series in paperback form and have systematically gathered the ebooks for my personal library. I am enjoying rereading them and writing reviews. I am fascinated by this family. There are so many members within the two branches of this families and their ‘gifts’ are so unique and varied, it is never dull when they enter the scene. Each book features a Vaughn or a Wherlocke [sometimes both] and manages to have other family members visit and give aid or assistance when needed. They seem to know or sense when there is trouble and especially when someone in the family is hurt. I found that fascinating. This review may contain ***SPOILERS***
This was a tough story to read. Secrets would be revealed that will shock and surprise. In fact, some of the evil displayed, I’ve never seen before. I am sure our author researched such machinations and there are probably historical records of such horrid experiences. However, I mean… I am still shaking my head. The reveal caught me completely off guard.
I was horrified by the insane machinations of one very evil person and the secret that he held. Lady Catryn de Warrenne was a mess when her five-year-old son Alwyn was kidnapped by his uncle. In her attempt to chase after the kidnappers, when her horse stumbled and started to limp, she stole… um… borrowed Sir Orion Wherlocke’s coach. This was a joke carried over from the previous book. Sir Orion quickly followed her trail because his son, eight-year-old Giles, was inside the coach. Lady Catryn wouldn’t discover that until she stopped to rest the horses.
Alwyn was adorable and his ability to talk to his ‘papa’ was freaking amazing. I couldn’t help but love that part. He quickly became friends with Giles Wherlocke after the boy assisted in recapturing the heir and returning him to his mother. That was only a temporary fix as the evil uncle continued to harass and plague the family. I wasn’t sure Catryn was going to make it when family secrets began to be revealed. How much treachery and betrayal could one woman handle?
The children involved in this story were wise beyond their years and there was such a story behind them. OMG! This story was hardcore and the adventure was fast and furious, I CNPID. I was holding my breath to the very end. When the Wherlocke and Vaughn relations arrived, you knew things would begin to happen. Yep, I love this family.

Hannah Howell makes you think the impossible is possible in this great series. I am amazed at her scope of knowledge of human nature.
I think Orion is my favorite Wherlocke, but I think that about every Wherlocke. Wonderful action, intriguing characters, and a bit of other- worldness – a great read.
