Oakley Spurlock is dying. She only has weeks to live thanks to a freak infection that totally and completely destroyed her kidneys.Despite her family’s desperation, not a single one of them is a match. In a last-ditch attempt, Oakley’s father takes to social media to beg for help to save his daughter’s life. ***Pace Vineyard is lost. So lost, in fact, that he’s not sure he wants to be found. But … he’s not sure he wants to be found.
But then a beautiful woman’s face is splashed across social media, and Pace finds a spark in his soul for the first time since a bomb went off beside him.
He’s already missing two legs. What’s one more kidney?
At least, that’s what he tells himself.
What he doesn’t expect is to give his heart to the woman, too. Or for the woman to run away with it and force him to follow.

Wow Pace is a force to be reckon with in I’d Rather Not. I loved the story line and the characters whole heartily! Oakley is the perfect heroine who saves Pace when he thought he did not need saving. LLV shows the power of chemistry and love. It truly will make you start living life like you should be. I could not put my kindle down until I read the last page. This book my friends is winner and you do not want to miss out!
5 Love Surprises them Both Stars!!
Oakley and Pace are my new favorite book couple by Ms. Vale! This is book three in this series and in my opinion it’s the best book. It’s emotionally driven given the subject matter and Ms. Vale has done such a wonderful job in highlighting organ donation and what it means for the people involved.
I loved Pace so much and the different sides we see of him especially when it comes to Oakley. This is almost an insta-love story as their feelings for each other are almost immediate when they first meet in person. In reality though, they were simmering because they’ve known of each other since Oakley’s brother was deployed.
Oakley and Pace’s bond is so steadfast and immediate. It was clear to me that their love is one that will be lifelong. They have some obstacles in their way and they face them head-on. How they love each other is truly beautiful and exactly what each other needed. For someone to see them for more than what’s on the outside.
The pacing and story in and of itself captured me from the first page and the author has written a story that I will definitely remember for a long time. It highlights the result of war and how it affects everyone around these characters lives. Oakley is exactly what Pace needed and I’m just thrilled that he was open to seeing this woman is exactly what he needed.
This series continues to get better and better and I can’t wait to see what happens next!
ACK!!! I FLOVE this series. Every freakin book gets better than the last one. The feels were all over the place with this one, up and down and up again! Lani Lynn Vale knows how to put some shock value into a quick read. Maybe it is just me that devours each and every book like a damn Twinkie, quick!
The topics that she brings to her macho Alpha men and smart ass women are amazing. This book touched a lot on life and death, and in good ways and bad. The complete understanding of the procedures and terminology, was amazing. Heck, even if it weren’t the right facts, it was totally believable. Cannot wait for Royal in the next book!!!
Is it the love I felt from both Pace and Oakley? Maybe the humor that surrounds all the characters? Maybe seeing some of my favorites characters from past LLV books? A straight plot that had my heart pounding and tears in my eyes? It is all of these things and more that made me love Pace and Oakley’s story. It was beautiful and funny, scary and joyful. Like all of this authors others books, we have an amazing romance, some suspense, action scenes, laughter and steamy scenes. I just loved it. It was everything I was hoping for, for these 2. I can’t wait for the next in this series. 5 stars #2OCCJD
4 1/2 stars
I’d Rather Die is a story that hooks you in immediately and the fast pace keeps you hooked all the way through the book.
Oakley Spurlock needs a kidney or she’ll die and Pace Vineyard is her match literally. Having known her brother, Ford, in the army and served with him, Pace had only ever seen photos of Oakley but he’d liked what he’d seen and knew her to be a loving and supportive sister.
Oakley is such a sweetheart and right from the time you know her life is in jeopardy you can’t help but feel for her and her family. The closeness of her family is a really enjoyable aspect of the story and in direct contrast to Pace’s situation. His family, except his aunt, make you feel so angry and disgusted with them. Pace is such a gorgeous character with a huge heart and capacity to love.
Oh my when the action heats up it is explosive, literally! My heart was just about jumping out of my chest with fear, in saying that, it was incredible suspense and the reason why I gave it the extra half a star. Another fabulous story by this author.
I have ‘t ever read anything by Lani Lynn Vale that was bad. This book was no exception. Pace is stateside trying to recover from the explosion that took his legs and cost him the only job he ever wanted, the military. Oakley is his best friend’s sister and he has liked her and looked forward to the care packages that she sends and her brother shares with all the men.
Pace finds out that Oakley is sick and needs a kidney or she will die. He immediately gets tested. This story has all the feels. They connect immediately and they have multiple things to contend with to get to their HEA. I loved this book, I loved that even with disabilities they are portrayed as normal. Their love story was funny and steamy. You should definitely read it!
Pace and Oakley are everything I needed and more!!! This series just gets better with each book Lani puts out. However I think Pace and Oakley are my favorite so far. The way Pace just steps up for and loves Oakley is exactly what every woman deserves in a man. I literally couldn’t put this book down and devoured it in one sitting. I can not recommend this book enough. By Laura
Lani Lynn Vale is quickly becoming one of my favorite authors. This KPD series is so good and it has bring it wonderful books. Pace Vineyard has been in other books and now it is his time. He is a war hero and a double amputee and now a KPD police officer. He is actually just walking through life until he sees a social media post of his best friend’s father urging for a kidney donor for his daughter, Oakley, she had an infection that affected her kidneys and now she needs desperately one to live. He knows he is the one and he jumps in this opportunity not only because of his friend but for Oakley as well since he has had a crush on her forever. And their journey begins! This couple, Pace and Oakley, are so adorable! Just as the family and friends, they are witty, non-apologetic and so much fun and sexy.
I am addicted to this series and this author’s books and looking forward to reading more!
I just loved it!
I’d Rather Not blew all my expectations away!! It contained all the feels. It went from emotional to funny to steamy hot to suspenseful. I’d Rather Not has everything plus so much heart, it’s a fantastic read!
Each chapter began with a quirky quote or funny text. I adored them to the point that I was sending them to my daughter so we could chuckle over them together. Even at the roughest moments or steamiest times, those quotes made me laugh and most of them I had to take a moment to share before I continued reading. This is the first book I’ve read by Lani and I enjoyed it so much, I know it won’t be my last.
I’d Rather Not is a heartwarming story about a soldier and his best friends sister falling in love under the most unique of circumstances. I enjoyed everything about this book and I hope you do too.
Oakley Spurlock was in desperate need of a kidney. Her family wasn’t a match and she was on limited time. Her family, in a desperate attempt to save her life, put word out online seeking a willing donor to donate one of their kidneys and that was how Pace ended up seeing a familiar face.
Pace Vineyard is a soldier who has already fought back from severe injuries when an explosion took both of his legs, but he was a fighter and the loss of his lower limbs didn’t keep a man like him down. He’d been deployed with Oakley’s brother, Ford when the accident happened. He knew of her, but had never met her in person. In his heart he knew the right thing to do, he just hoped he was a match.
“I knew from the moment that I met you that I was put on this Earth to change your life.”
When the doctors informed Oakley that someone had stepped up, that a match donor had been found, she was thrilled and thankful. The Spurlocks soon considered Pace one of the family and the instant connection that Oakley and Pace felt upon meeting was mutual. They shared a connection that only grew with time and a passion that boiled as they grew to know one another.
“I stared at the man that was quickly beginning to steal every single piece of my heart. One slow second at a time.”
If you believe in fate, this story will move you and make you fall in love with the power of these two people who overcame all obstacles. Oakley and Pace along with their entire family are so endearing you will love reading this book.

I feel like I say this every time… probably because I do! BUT to get the feels that this book will give you, to have your world shattered and sit on the edge of your seat, the previous books need to be read before this… and I’m not talking the KPD series, I’m saying the whole shebang.. Boomtown on. We fell in love with Oakley when she called 911 to get patched into Trance’s radio to tell him that “Fort ate her darts”… at that point that little girl had a bit of our hearts. Now, years later little Oakley is all grown up, but facing the ticking clock of death. She needs a kidney, or she will die, and in his desperation Trance took to social media and put it out there that his baby girl needed help. It was this post that Pace sees and immediately jumps into action to see if he can give her his kidney… he doesn’t realize that this is just the beginning and his kidney isn’t the only thing he will give her.
I had teary eyes probably for over half of this story. This book had me on the edge of my seat, biting nails, gripping my phone desperate for the next word, next page, and next chapter. When I finally reached the end of the last sentence all I can think about are the feels this book gave me. This was such an amazing read, LLV has the ability to make this so much more than a story, she has the ability to turn this into a journey, a movie in your head, something that you are very invested in. I loved every bit of this journey, even that sad parts. I give this 5 amazing stars.

Oakley! Yes we are getting Oakley’s book, a character I have loved but rarely read about since the cutest conversation ever when she phoned her daddy Trance at work in his book all that time ago. Oakley is dying.. noooooo, but her brother Ford’s army buddy, Pace steps up to help, despite having his own issues. He has never met Oakley but has been fascinated with her for many years thanks to the things she did for Ford when they were on tour together. The whole family instantly loves Pace, not just for what he is doing for Oakley but because he is just genuinely a nice guy, despite his crappy upbringing. Oakley and Pace obviously have chemistry from the get go, but it is genuine attraction or just a hero worship/damsel situation?
I love, love, and yes I’ll say it again LOVE Laniland and I am thrilled we’re getting to see the kids’ stories and of course glimpses of their parents; characters I already loved from their books. Another great read I managed in one sitting because who can put an LLV book down unless you absolutely have to?! 5 stars yet again, and I can’t wait for the next one!
One hot vet who’s hero status is not just about the battle field! Ashley @ Carolina Chic’s Read
I am in love Lani Lynn Vale does it again! Pace is so swoon worthy and I he has a heart of gold even when he doesn’t want anyone to see it! Oakley is a girl just wanting to live, after a freak accident she is left needing a lifesaving kidney but will the person who saves her life be the love of her life! Pace has been handed a hard life can saving someone’s life save his in return? Get your tissues ready this one will have your emotions all over the place!
Lani Lynn Vale 10 stars worth in my book!!!
This book….I was in tears from the get go. There is absolutely no way around it, you will go through at least a box of tissues reading this book! I loved Oakley right from the beginning, when she announced that “Fort ate my darts” in Kevlar to My Vest. I knew right then that she would have all of the spunk and crazy humor that her mother did. And for her book to begin like this…. I just couldn’t stop the tears!
Oakley had an amazing life. Wonderful parents. Loving (if annoying) siblings. A whole MC at her back. Until a freak incident threatens to take her life. Years go by with no hope, until the last person she expects, offers her a chance at life. And love?
Pace, on the other hand, has lived a life of one disappointing tragedy after another. A horrific childhood, led to a life in the military. One he seemed to enjoy, until it left him missing pieces of himself. But he still has something left to give, can still help someone live the life they were meant to have.
This book absolutely slayed me. Pace and Oakley….the connection between them is deeper than just love or intimacy. Their connection is one of life and death. It is absolutely perfect! I don’t think there is another way to describe this book, except perfect! #newfavoritecouple
