NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLERA spur-of-the-moment ski trip becomes a bone-chilling nightmare when a wrong turn leaves Boston medical examiner Maura Isles marooned—far from home and help—in the snowbound Wyoming mountains. Seeking shelter from the cold, she and her traveling companions stumble upon Kingdom Come—a remote village of identical houses that seems to have become a ghost town overnight. But … ghost town overnight. But the abandoned hamlet has dark secrets to tell, and Maura’s party may not be as alone as they think. Days later, word reaches homicide cop Jane Rizzoli that Maura’s charred remains have been found at the scene of a car crash. But the shocking news leaves Jane with too many questions, and only one way to get answers. Determined to dig up the truth, she heads for the frozen desolation of Kingdom Come, where gruesome discoveries lie buried, and a ruthless enemy watches and waits.

I’ve read several of Tess Gerritsen’s novels, but I’ve never been able to get into her Rizzoli and Isles books. I’m a sucker for a survival story, though, and was intrigued enough by the description on the flyleaf to give it a try. It did not disappoint in that area. Maura’s struggle to live through the punishing cold early in the book and, later, eluding would-be killers with the boy Rat were both compelling to me.
I also found myself connecting with Maura on a deeper level than my previous experiences. She begins the book at an impasse with her current lover (Isles seems to have a bad track record in choosing lovers). Her impulse to do something, anything to break out of her life’s pattern is very understandable and, naturally, leads to trouble. Her experiences help her clarify what she wants to do with the relationship – mostly by blasting her out of her love-angst.
I don’t want to give any spoilers, but the book starts with a ‘garden variety’ polygamous cult with a charismatic prophet. You think you know what happened to his followers… but you don’t. You also think that the boys raised in this patriarchal cult would be greatly valued and groomed to rule… but they’re not. The ending holds a final twist that truly did surprise me… but made sense at the same time.
This was a great read. I plowed through it within 24 hours – it was that enjoyable. I think other non-Rizzoli and Isles readers might enjoy it, too.
Love her books
LOVED IT !!!
Page turner!! Gripping!!!!
Maura Isles attends a medical conference in Wyoming and reunites with a man she knew from college. A spur of the moment decision to join him, his two friends and teenage daughter for a skiing junket proves to be foolhardy when they get lost on the way and end up stranded in a remote location. They find 12 deserted cabins nearby in a place called Kingdom Come and fight for survival with no cell service or electricity.
I jumped into this story without reading the blurb and liked that I had no idea where it would lead (I’ve only included the barest minimum above). This was pretty terrifying and had so many turns and bends, the creepy town being one of the biggest mysteries. The weather was an important element as it took away any and all normal choices under similar circumstances. Nothing about this story was predictable and I had no clue as to what was going on until it was revealed near the end.
I really liked Tanya Eby’s performance as she was a great storyteller and portrayed Maura and Jane really well. This was an interesting and haunting story that surprised me with its directions. I continue to be intrigued by this series.
A great read!
Tess Gerritsen takes you on a chilly ride with this book.
Maura Isles decides to spontaneously go on a ski trip with an old friend she meets up with at a medical conference and it doesn’t take long for things to go horribly wrong. Maura finds herself and the 4 other occupants of the vehicle stranded on an unforgiving mountain covered in snow. Their only shelter is a few eerily abandoned cabins in a village called Kingdom Come. The group slowly learns about the occupants of the abandoned cabins through what has been left behind and it looks like they didn’t leave willingly.
The story moves very quickly and I was surprised at how easily Jane Rizzoli accepted the fact that Maura was dead. There were too many inconsistencies. I was also pleasantly surprised by how Maura was able to adapt to her circumstances. She never seemed like the outdoorsy type to me. When Rat saves Maura’s life, I think he saved more than her life. He really made he think about her life and what she wants. He also saved his own life. Maura became very maternal and I loved that. I loved seeing that side of her.
The ending of the book was very surprising. There is one character that is extremely sketching that I was right about, but not for what I was thinking. It wasn’t even close to what I was thinking. I always enjoy the science part of these books and this one is no exception.
I love this series and this one has a different type of story which was interesting. Maura goes on a trip, does something crazy for her and is now missing or worse! Loved seeing something surprising and different than what I expected.
I have read most of this series & enjoyed all of them.
Enjoy all of Tess Gerritson’s books.
I love these characters
Not bad. Entertaining. I thought the end dragged on a bit.
I enjoy all of the Rizzoli and Isles books. I think Tess is a great writer and I have trouble putting the book down. I love that it is a series of book because every time I pick up a new book it is like visiting old friends. I don’t believe that the story line gets stale as it does in so many other series.
I like Rizzoli and Islas books and I found it interesting and kept you reading right to the end.
love this series!
if you like the team you will
Less about the crimes and solving them than the love life of the protagonist.
I always like her books.
I’ve enjoyed all the Jane and Maura books written by Tess Gerritsen. One can see how the cult mentality can consume a group of like minded people.
