This book was a little unexpected for me. To be clear, this book is dark. I’ve read quite a few books by this author. It’s not usually of question of whether I will like the book (because, yes), but I think this book definitely stood out as distinct from her other work for me. There’s a raw edge to this book that I don’t think I’ve seen in her other books, with the exception of Rock Hard Beautiful, where there’s also that rawness from grief. Similarly, in this book, Gidget has suffered through the grief of losing close family, and it’s left her a barely functioning mess. Not only has she spent years not getting over her grief, but her home life is lacking, to say the least, abusive in the simplest of terms. “Princess to a dirty throne,” Gidget knows that all she is is property, and she spends her time trying to be as independent as she can while staying out of the way as best she can, hoping to one day be free of it all. There are so many ways to describe Gidget and her feelings: fierce, strong, belligerent, smart, broken, torn, guilty, angry, brave. This story is told through a mix of present day and flashbacks. Some might worry that it would feel disjointed, but it doesn’t; it makes you feel every single one of those emotions along with her, especially where it comes to Gidget’s family and the men in her life. Agh, the men in her life. Her father’s loyalest men, much older than she is (she’s 16 in parts of the book, and I think they ranged from mid-20s to 30s), who are torn between how they feel and loyalty to her father. I’ve seen some reviews that complain that there isn’t really romance in this book, the men are one dimensional, and there aren’t romantic relationships in this book. To a degree, yes, they’re right; this story is raw and gritty. It’s not flowers, candles, and music; it’s oil, smoke, and blood. This story is (obviously, I think) very much laying the groundwork for a much larger story, so there isn’t a lot in the way of relationship development. Yes, there are times you want to clobber the men in this book for lack of action, but at the same time, there are subtle glimpses of feelings in this book. Likewise, there is a context here. This is a motorcycle club, traditionally misogynistic, violent, and chaos, with Gidget and her men stuck in the middle of all of that and just trying to survive. In my opinion, only one of them stepped up, but I don’t think that means the rest are beyond redemption, but there’s going to need to be some serious stepping up in my opinion; just being sexy as sin does not redeem them or the things they’ve done.
Personally, I think this was another incredible read from this author. I started it late and couldn’t put it down, and ended up not getting any sleep. It was so worth it, though, and I need book 2 in my life.
I LOVE this book!! I cannot wait to read what happens next. This book keeps you on the edge of your seat and guessing at all times. I can see through her writing how this was a passion project for her. We, the readers, can definitely feel it.
I enjoyed this book but would like to read the next in the series.
In a word, fanfreakingtastic!
*KU Read
I have read a couple of C.M’s reverse harem books, but they were bully romance, so I thought I knew what I was getting into, yea, I had no idea.
C.M. brought a dark and gritty MC to life with a twist. Gidget is the beautifully written heroin that you feel for right away. Gidget is in a horrible situation, and nobody is there for her and the people she should be able to trust she can’t.
Grainger, Sin, Crown, and Beast are part of her father’s MC and are nasty men. They are bodyguards to Gidge,t who does not make it easy for them. But while she is running away from everyone and everything. She is also sexually attracted to them.
I Was Born Ruined is a slow-burn story, twisted with lies, blood, and death. There is sex with Gidget while she is under the age of eighteen, BUT I have to tell you to get over it if it bothers you. For one, duh, it is an MC book. And two if you read the book and the story it fits. Nothing in this book happens without reason; men and women have sex underage all the time. It happens every day.
When I finished this book, I was sad to see it was a cliffhanger. But I will be watching for the next book installment because I have to know what and how Gidget is going to get out of her next dilemma. And also how Grainger, Sin, Crown, and Beast are going to help and if they will ever grow enough balls between them to overturn Gidget’s father in the MC.
I am desperately waiting for the next book. Different twist but so good
This was a great series starter. High school plus MC plus RH story are one of my faves and this book has it all.
This was the first book that I’ve ever read by this author..and I was not disappointed!! This book may not be for everyone. It’s a reverse harem, which means the character Gidget is with several partners..and she’s 17. That’s a hard limit for some people. But if you can look beyond that, this was a good read. I thought that it was well written. I was on the verge of tears a couple of times because of the way she was treated by her dad and brother. I couldn’t put out down! But then it ended on a cliffhanger!! Ugh!! So, I’ll try another one of her books while I wait.
