Author Mary Burton continues her thrilling “Criminal Profiler Series” with Book #4, “I See You”. A tip to an investigative journalist leads to the discovery of skeletal remains from an almost twenty-year old crime. Forensic artist and FBI Special Agent Zoe Spencer uses her skills and intuition to recreate the image of the victim through an eerily life-like sculpture. When Zoe’s boss recognizes the face as that of a young college student who had vanished without a trace all those years ago, a tumultuous chain of events will follow. Zoe is reconnected with Detective William Vaughan, whom she had first met when he was a student at one of her training seminars. A mutual attraction had led to a casual involvement. When more violence against women occurs, and the old case is linked with the new crimes, Zoe and William must work together to stop a killer. The more time they spend together, the more their appreciation and awareness of each other grows–could it lead to more than a brief affair? Author Mary Burton has a way of drawing readers into her stories that keeps the pages turning, and when one story ends, you can’t wait for the next one to begin. “I See You” is highly recommended for lovers of romantic suspense and top-notch police procedural thrillers.

I See You by Mary Burton
Criminal Profiler #2
Intense and intricate this story tells of the unearthing of a serial killer after the killer sends a hint to a journalist about where a murder victim might be found. The bones were handed over to Special Agent Zoe Spencer who has an uncanny ability to sculpt likenesses from remains or draw from memories of those who have seen suspects. Zoe has been a dancer, a wife and is now an FBI profiler. She is still sort of grieving the loss of her husband six years previously. That said, she has also begun a sometimes-colleague with benefits relationship with Detective William Vaughn who just happened to be the one who sent the cold-case murder victim’s skull to Quantico.
With so much time and energy invested in the sculpting of Marsha Prince’s image Zoe is set to assist Vaughn in the search for Marsha’s murderer. Into their search spring a few more murder cases of a more recent nature that also need to be solved. Throw in the disappearance of Marsha’s sister and niece and the plot thickens.
What I liked:
* Zoe: Though at first she seemed a bit cold and unfeeling she definitely warmed up. She is strong, competent and smart.
* Vaughn: A great homicide detective who has been the one to raise his son now off to college. He is warm, caring and focused…on whatever he is doing.
* The pacing of the story
* The prostitute that got away
* The back stories of the main characters
* The fact that sometimes things don’t work out as expected
* The romance and how it developed
What I did not like:
* I am afraid that if I give too much detail here I might give the story away BUT I will say that I was left unsettled by some things that happened toward the end of the story.
Did I like this book? Yes indeed
Would I read more in this series? Without a doubt
Note: I went into this book thinking that the series would revolve around the previous profiler solving another case but instead have a feeling this series may instead be about the five (I believe it was five) members of the profiling team and cases they are sent out to solve. Because of this the book is definitely stand alone. I would like to find out if in the future any of the members o f the team will overlap when solving a case.
Thank you to NetGalley and Montlake Romance for the ARC – This is my honest review.
5 Stars
It begins when a journalist, following an anonymous tip, find human remains in the basement of an apartment building.
FBI Agent Zoe Spencer uses her ability to recreate faces of murder victims through sculpture. Who she finds in this instance is a teenage girl who disappeared years ago.
Homicide Detective William Vaughn is investigating a series of murders … all young women, and all resemble the victim found earlier.
So maybe this is not a cold case …. maybe someone is continuing the cycle.
Is it more than a coincidence that the first victim’s sister and her daughter both disappear?
Spencer and Vaughn must work together to find the killer, delving through decades of lies and secrets.
Well-written by one of my favorite authors, the suspense is palpable and the characters are finely drawn. Spencer and Vaughn are on again – off again lovers and they pick up where the left off when they last worked together. There is spice and sizzle, but I really enjoyed how they share their professional, as well as personal lives.
Many thanks to the author / Montlake Romance / Netgalley for the digital copy of this addition to the author’s Criminal Profiler series. Read and reviewed voluntarily, the opinions expressed here are unbiased and entirely my own.
4.5 stars
My first book by the author and what a great choice to start with.
I love romance combined with suspense and this story has it all. From the first chapter I couldn’t stop reading and all the fast paced moments mixed with so many twists and turns that some I must admit were very unexpected, everything comes together for a great reading.
This book just have the perfect mix of suspense with a dash of romance and I loved it.
Thank you NetGalley for the ARC of I See You by Mary Burton that I read and reviewed.
I See You is the second book in the Criminal Profiler series by Mary Burton and this book was pretty good. I can honestly say that it was very shocking with how Burton ended it and I really enjoyed that because I did not see that coming at all and that is what made the book.
I was not feeling the matchup between Vaughan and Zoe as I much as I would have liked. I felt it was kind of forced and not as natural as other pairings that Burton is known for. Maybe it was just me but I just was not feeling them as a couple at all.
Overall, the story was good and the mystery was what makes it worth reading. It will keep the reader guessing and throw some surprises at you that will keep the pages turning.
I See You gets four out of five stars from me.
I read lots of different books in varying genres and Mary Burton is one of my favorite crime mystery/suspense authors. She writes believable characters and scenarios that could easily be seen on the local evening news. Detective William Vaughan has corpse on the department’s hands. The old skeleton has been discovered in a storage area for an unknown amount of time. The remains have been sent to the FBI and Agent Zoe Spencer has sculpted the skull into the likeness of a young girl. Zoe and Vaughan are assigned to work the case together. They have a personal history but that is only a tiny part of this story. It is really about a missing girl from 18 years prior that becomes identified by Agent Spencer. As the story unfolds it sets in a series of random killings that Detective Vaughan doesn’t think are random at all but connected around the newly discovered corpse. I don’t give away spoilers but I will tell you that this story is gritty, suspenseful, intriguing and told from dual POV. It stands completely alone but I have read Ms. Burton’s other books and I recommend them all to my mystery and suspense loving friends.
I See You was a multi-layered read full of twists and turns, mystery, suspense, secrets and lies, and a sort of slow-burn romance between the two main characters, Vaughan and Spencer. The plot and character development continued throughout the story at a steady pace, continually drawing you in, as well as sinking you deeper into the web of secrets and lies Vaughan and Spencer had to unravel surrounding the family members involved in their case. All was definitely not as it seemed.
I enjoyed Vaughan’s character from the start, but I found Zoe Spencer’s character a bit harder for me to warm up to. Yet, the deeper I got into the read I began to like her character more. As for the storyline, it had several layers to unravel, many characters to keep straight and I have to admit a time or two I was a tad confused but by the reveal and wrap up I found I enjoyed the overall story. I am a big fan of Burton’s books and though I did enjoy this one, it did not leave me with the ‘oh wow!’ feeling I usually have when finishing one of her stories but this will definitely not deter me from reading more.
*I received an ARC from the publisher, via NetGalley, and I am providing my honest review.
I enjoy all of Mary Burton’s books. Some more than others. This one was a good read, but didn’t knock my socks like the first profiler one did. The book blurb makes it sound more about Zoe, and it’s really not. She and Vaughn play a major portion and we do get t0 learn about Zoe and we watch her growth, but this book was the case. The past murder, the missing women. Zoe and Vaughn are more like guides to keep it going. There was a big twist I did not see the relationship between two characters. I am NOT talking Zoe and Vaughn. I wanted complete justice, but I understand the ending is the way it can very well play out in life. Take a win where you can. Thank you Net Galley, Montlake and Mary Burton, for the arc. All thoughts and opinions are my own and were unsolicited.
Another great thriller. A well written perfectly paced story pulling you in from the start. This is a murder that started twenty years ago and finally got solved. Vaughan and Zoe get to the bottom of a big family case. These stories written are great insight into how cases go through steps when it is cold cases to get solved.
I liked this book. I’m not familiar with the series but I was able to jump in with no trouble. The love story balanced well with the suspense and there wasn’t an excess of psychology to bog it down but enough to make it plausible and interesting. I really like the main character, Zoe Spencer. She was a tough woman and in the end, I was rooting for her to kick butt. Her romance with William Vaughn is steamy but doesn’t feel unbelievable. I could tell the previous stories set up their connection already so I was on board to explore where they were in their relationship.
The mystery had a clear story about family secrets and unfolded without too much foreshadowing. The story moves quickly and has a solid plot that didn’t try to serve gimmicks. It made me want to read other books in the series and put Mary Burton on my radar in the future.
The Guessing Game
This was a great story of who done it which left me turning pages as fast as I could. Every time I thought I had it figured out the game would change. So sit back and be ready to be taken on one heck of a ride with Mary Burton’s “I See You”.
I love this author’s books. Zoe and William are great together, hope we see more of them in future books. They both have alot if “baggage ” but are serious about catching murderer of 2 sisters and other look alike victims, tension builds as secrets and twists are revealed. I literally read this book in one day, just couldn’t put it down.
Mary Burton continues to uphold her reign in romantic suspense. The narrative and characters are well developed, while the plot is brimming with that apprehensive mystery that readers of this genre love. The storyline follows FBI Agent, Zoe Spencer and homicide Detective, William Vaughn as they navigate several murder investigations. The two have chemistry but they also have things from their past that require steady maneuvering. One of the finer points of Burton’s writing is that she puts the suspense/mystery aspect of her writing front and center and sprinkles the romance in as it fits into the storyline. This is a quick read, thoroughly enjoyable, and highly recommended. 5 stars
Thank you to #NetGalley for this ARC of #ISeeYou which I read and reviewed voluntarily. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Get ready to experience some chills and thrills. Author Mary Burton treats her readers to a turn-the-page experience in her latest release.
FBI Special Agent Zoe Spencer is a profiler who uses her artistic talent to help solve crimes. She has been working for weeks to recreate the face that belongs to the burned bones discovered by an out-of-work investigative reporter who received a tip about the location of the bones. To everyone’s surprise it turns out the bones belong to a missing teen who disappeared eighteen years ago. Zoe ends up working the case with her on-again/off-again lover, homicide detective William Vaughn. The attraction between Zoe and William is undeniable. But they have a murder to solve so… Or is that murders, plural?
I See You by Mary Burton is the second book in her Criminal Profilers series. The twists, turns and surprises will keep readers turning the pages until the very end. Ms. Burton has written a tight storyline filled with suspense. Her characters are well-developed and realistic. I totally enjoyed this book. Mary Burton is one of my favorite authors and I See You is one of her best books yet!
I See You by Mary Burton a four-star read that you will want to profile. This is the second novel in the Criminal profiler series, but they can be read as stand-alone as I haven’t read the first one yet, but I will be going back and getting hold of it. The suspense is sublime, it will keep you on your toes and guessing all the way through. There are so many twists that you don’t see the turns in the road coming and what turns they are. Throw in some slow burn romance and you have a winner.
Story starts off with FBI profiler Zoe Spencer identifying a murder victim from 2001 using Forensic facial reconstruction. You think that’s going to be the main plot of the story but boy does the train derail. As Zoe and homicide detective William Vaughan start digging into the past, that past comes crashing into the present bringing more murders and shocking revelations. Twist and turns are abound.
If you really want to be a criminal profiler or if it interst you this is a truly good book. I own two versions!
Zoe Spencer, an FBI criminal profiler is able to recreate the faces of unidentified murder victims. As the face she is working on is identified as a missing girl from a decades old cold case, Zoe is determined to find the killer. The case has her working again with detective William Vaughn, who is also her former lover. When the murders start again with “look a-likes”, Zoe and Vaughn are pressed to find the killer. A good romantic suspense that Mary Burton is known to write. Thank you Netgalley and the publisher Montlake Romance for an early copy of this book. I voluntarily read this book and the comments are my own.

This story is one heck of a rollercoaster ride . Special Agent Zoe Spencer works for the FBI Criminal Profiler Division . Her specialty is forensic sketches and or sculptures . She is tasked in reconstructing a burnt skull that was discovered in a trunk by Reporter Nikki McDonald the king out a tip .
Together Zoe and Alexandria Homicide Detective William Vaughan reopen a cold case of a Missing persons no longer missing . Little do they know what a can of worms is opened . This is one of the best page turning thriller – romance I’ve read . Absolutely a must read . I highly recommend taking the time to read and enjoy as much as I did .
Zoe Spencer is a FBI agent and makes sketches and bust off murder victims. Several years ago a nineteen year old girl went missing and a reporter gets a tip to find a trunk. When she opens it, a skeleton is inside, it the remains of the missing girl. William Vaughn is a homicide detective and has had an on again/ off again relationship with Spencer. Now they are working together to find out who killed the woman. While they are working on the case, the girls sister and niece disappear too. It’s a race against time to find them before it’s too late.
Awesome story with plenty of action and suspense. A single dad and a woman who started out to be a ballerina but ends up a FBI agent. First time reading this author and I couldn’t put it down.
