I Scream, You Scream by Wendy Lyn Watson: This book one in a cozy series that is sure to delight. The ice cream shop setting is unique and fascinating. This was a fast read with plenty of action. A recommended read.
“I Scream, You Scream” earns 4/5 Scrumptious Sundaes…Murderously Fun!
How slow does business have to be for you to agree to cater desserts for your ex-husband’s company picnic? Slow, very slow… And when the ex’s girlfriend ends up dead, what defense can you offer the police? Well, that might be difficult, so maybe investigating for yourself is the answer. Tallulah “Tally” Jones owns the Remember the à-la-Mode ice cream shop (very clever Texas reference) known for her handmade treats, but due to some financial problems, she needs to accept a job to provide ice cream sundaes for her “bleep” husband. Demands for using a special “green,” threats to find another caterer, and veiled digs about Tally as a less than “svelte” figure make this whole thing more a problem than a saving grace. However, Miss Fancy Britches ends up dead, and the evidence points toward Tally. The discoveries along the way might just mean jealousies, revenge, and karma are all served cold!
Wendy Lyn Watson has penned a delightful first in a series mystery with a steady pace and mouthwatering descriptions of ice cream, but like many first books, character introductions, connections, background, and setting descriptions took the lead. The mystery started out a bit slow, but it pick up adding a few clever motives and suspects and a satisfying ending. The characters seem tentative and ill prepared for investigating, but… Hello! They’re amateurs! I am eager to see the personal growth and improved investigative skill as the series continues. Fun BFF, teenage niece, and the hint of romance has made a reappearance. A high school crush, has returned, and although he joins in with some of the investigation, more may be on the horizon. No recipes. I’d have loved a frozen treat or two, but overall it was enjoyable.
Tally Jones is trying to get her new ice cream shop off the ground, but business has been slow. It’s so slow, she’s agreed to cater the dessert for Wayne, her ex-husband, at the picnic his company puts on each fall. The morning after the picnic, Wayne’s new girlfriend is found dead in bed. When gossip and the police begin to look at Tally, she knows she has to find the truth. Can she clear her name?
I felt right at home with these characters within just a few chapters. Tally is wonderful, and the rest of the cast of regulars are just as much fun. The suspects were strong as well. Unfortunately, the mystery wasn’t quite as strong, especially in the first half. Still, it did pick up in the second half and provide some good surprises before we reached the logical climax. Add in enough talk about ice cream to make me drool and you’ve got a perfect book to enjoy during the summer.

This book has been on my to-read list for a while and now that it is to be re-released and available on Netgalley I requested it. I don’t know why I waited this long! It is a super fun read with a lot of humour. I got hooked right from the beginning.
I enjoyed all the characters no matter if they were nice or not. I felt right at home – not that I live anywhere near the southern states but it felt just comfy.
The murderer was a bit easy to spot even though at some point I wavered a bit with my suspicions. Nevertheless I had a great time reading the mystery and I am looking forward to reading the other books in this series.
I requested this book on Netgalley and would like to thank Henery Press and the author for providing me with a copy.
