NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • Jane Rizzoli and Maura Isles—the inspiration for the smash hit TNT series—continue their bestselling crime-solving streak, as they pursue a shadowy psychopath keeping secrets and taking lives.“Suspense doesn’t get smarter than this.”—Lee Child Two separate homicides, at different locations, with unrelated victims, have more in common than just being investigated by … common than just being investigated by Boston PD detective Jane Rizzoli and medical examiner Maura Isles. In both cases, the bodies bear startling wounds—yet the actual cause of death is unknown. It’s a doubly challenging case for the cop and the coroner to be taking on, at a fraught time for both of them. As Jane struggles to save her mother from the crumbling marriage that threatens to bury her, Maura grapples with the imminent death of her own mother—infamous serial killer Amalthea Lank.
While Jane tends to her mother, there’s nothing Maura can do for Amalthea, except endure one final battle of wills with the woman whose shadow has haunted her all her life. Though succumbing to cancer, Amalthea hasn’t lost her taste for manipulating her estranged daughter—this time by dangling a cryptic clue about the two bizarre murders Maura and Jane are desperately trying to solve.
But whatever the dying convict knows is only a piece of the puzzle. Soon the investigation leads to a secretive young woman who survived a shocking abuse scandal, an independent horror film that may be rooted in reality, and a slew of martyred saints who died cruel and unusual deaths. And just when Rizzoli and Isles think they’ve cornered a devilish predator, the long-buried past rears its head—and threatens to engulf more innocent lives, including their own.
Praise for I Know a Secret: A Rizzoli & Isles Novel
“Tess Gerritsen brings back Boston homicide detective Jane Rizzoli and medical examiner Maura Isles to tackle another baffling mystery . . . weaving a thriller that slowly unfolds in unexpected ways. . . . Rizzoli and Isles feel like real people, and readers who are fans of either the book series or the former TV show know there’s an emotional angle to the proceedings and care about everything that happens to the duo. . . . Gerritsen writes effortlessly, and this is another stellar entry in the series.”—Associated Press
“The unforgettable team of Rizzoli and Isles is back working on a chilling and difficult case. . . . The twists and turns this novel takes will force Gerritsen’s heroines to face difficult emotions and their own biases. As always, Gerritsen is a master storyteller!”—RT Book Reviews
“The characters converge in dynamic, diabolical ways and, in doing so, reveal past events that continue to haunt the present day. . . . Gerritsen continues to surprise with the depth and range of her storytelling ambitions. . . . Like the best of big-screen boogeyman blockbusters, there’s complex villainy, a distortion between appearance and reality, and a third-act plot twist that will both surprise and satisfy. Wow! This series just keeps getting better with each book. I’ve read every one and this one doesn’t disappoint. Tess Gerritsen knows how to write a mystery thriller that keeps you in suspense until the very end. She does a fantastic job of waving the story so who think did it may not actually be the one. I also liked to see the family aspect in the book too. Looking forward to the next one.
I thought I had figured out who the bad guy was, but once again I was wrong. Gerritsen has an amazing talent for creating plots and characters that twist and turn and surprise.
This is the first Rizzoli and Isles book I’ve read, and I’ve never watched the show. Ideally, I would have started with the first book in the series, but reading out of order wasn’t an issue. This is a complete story on its own. I liked the main characters, and some of the history referred to in this book makes me want to go back to the beginning of the series and read more. I appreciate a murder mystery I can’t figure out in the early chapters. I had my suspicions with a quarter of the book left, and it was satisfying to learn I figured out part of it. This is a darker read, and I would not recommend this book for people who are triggered by child abuse.
I know a Secret is another Rizzoli and Isles story by Tess Gerritsen. The tale revolves around the murder of two individuals, in different locations, with no apparent connection. Both victims have similar wounds. The story got a bit bizarre for me with the reintroduction Amalthea Lank, Isles estranged mother, and a serial killer. The murders being investigated are similar to the deaths of martyred saints who died unusual deaths. Amazing twists and turns throughout.
Ms. Gerritsen delivers again. She draws you in on the first chapter and doesn’t let go until the end. You might think you know the culprit, but don’t get too comfy because there will be a twist or teaser to put you off into another direction! I read this book in 2 days (reading only at bedtime) & lost some sleep. 🙂 It’s continued to keep me wanting to turn that page! I’ve missed a few books before this one and plan to catch up with them. Thanks for a great read.
Excellent nail biting mystery
I LOVE Tess Gerristsen’s Rizzoli & Isles Series. I can’t get enough of them!
I love all of her books. Wish there were more to read.
I’ve enjoyed all the R&I books! Read every one!
There were a lot of twists and turns in this story, and then one last one at the end, Caught me by surprise. Highly recommended
Love all these books.
I love Rizzoli and Isles novels! My very favorite!
Good to have these characters back and to see some resolution of on going problems resolved. The plot wanders off the normal R & I path but was a very good read. In some ways, it seemed like it might be an end of series book. I hope that isn’t the case.
All of her books are excellent!
Great development of both character’s mothers which helps understand author’s choices for Rizzoli and Isles.
Loved it! Suspenseful, page after page! It’s a who done it read.
Obviously one of Tess Gerritsen’s early works and she got much better over time. Still, it’s interesting when you put it in contact.
Forensics expert Maura and Detective Jane Rizzoli are totally opposite yet they are the best of friends and they are phenomenal at what they do. They are smart, funny, and each has plenty of family drama , The same detectives are solidly involved for continuity. They are all in each other’s business but it is out of love. Intelligently written with the endings almost always a surprise. There are several suspect options woven and layered throughout the book.
Once again, Gerritsen brings Rizzoli and Isles into a thrilling, mind bending mystery.
Her detailed knowledge of the science of murder creates a realistic story that grips you until the end.
Excellent…as always by Ms. Gerritsen!
