One of the 20th Century’s most beloved novels is still winning hearts I Capture the Castle tells the story of seventeen-year-old Cassandra and her family, who live in not-so-genteel poverty in a ramshackle old English castle. Here she strives, over six turbulent months, to hone her writing skills. She fills three notebooks with sharply funny yet poignant entries. Her journals candidly chronicle … entries. Her journals candidly chronicle the great changes that take place within the castle’s walls, and her own first descent into love. By the time she pens her final entry, she has “captured the castle”– and the heart of the reader– in one of literature’s most enchanting entertainments.
This book has one of the most charismatic narrators I’ve ever met. — J.K. Rowling, author of the Harry Potter series

It’s hard to think of a time when people could live relatively cheaply in a run-down castle if they did no maintenance and had no servants. If you love Gerald Durrell’s stories of living on Corfu, you likely will love this book too for the almost endless stories of a nutty family. Totally entertaining and original.
Love the grit of the main character and the way she writes her feelings and reflections about what is going on with her family.
Unique story, believable characters.
a real classic
It takes a while to really connect with the characters and figure out what is going one but once you do it’s great. And the scene where they think she is a bear bc of her old fur coat, hilarious!
It’s been a long time, but I could read this more than once.
This awesome coming of age novel written long ago is still one of the best reads ever. Grab it and enjoy!
GREAT
This book has the same ambience of the books by the Bronte Sisters and Jane Austen. A great book to read in bed . I just loved it.
Very witty narrator with an eccentric family. They all just go about their lives even though the are ridiculously poor. I liked the writing and the story was interesting but this group of people was also frustrating in their silliness.
One of my all time favorite books!
SO real, and so entertaining!
I had heard many good things about this book, but I found it just ok. It certainly wasn’t as funny as I had heard, but it wasn’t horrible.
Beautifully written
I read this book some time ago and don’t remember it all that well. I remember that I enjoyed it. It’s a coming of age book about a young girl who lives in a ruined castle with her eccentric parents. The family has little money and so they have to make do.
An entertaining book with likable characters.
Just… wow!
When I first read I Capture the Castle in 2013, I felt that same magic that I experienced when reading the Anne of Green Gable series for the first time or the Betsy-Tacy series or the Little House on the Prairie series (albeit I’m a lot older now!). It just felt like coming home; it’s novels like this that keep me reading. It’s hard to …
I have the book but stopped part way thru lack of interest in the characters. The reviews made it seem more interesting.
This was an enjoyable read. The characters were interesting and kept my attention.
