A heartwarming, hilarious novel for anyone who has ever had a family, from the author of Lift and Separate. After a lifetime of marriage, Marcy Hammer is ready to get herself unhitched—just as everyone else in her life is looking for a commitment. Her new boyfriend, Jon, wants to get serious, and her soon-to-be ex-husband, Harvey, is desperate to get back together. When her headstrong daughter … headstrong daughter announces a secret engagement to Harvey’s attorney, Marcy finds herself planning her daughter’s wedding as she plans her own divorce.
Now with two huge events on the horizon, the indomitable Marcy soon realizes that there’s nothing like a wedding to bring out the worst in everybody. From petty skirmishes over an ever-growing guest list to awkward confrontations with her sticky-fingered new in-laws, pulling off the wedding is going to be a challenge; seeing her divorce through is going to be a trial. And trying to make everyone happy might prove to be impossible—because in the end, Marcy alone must make a choice between something old and something new.

Marilyn Simon Rothstein – A great follow up to her Lift and Separate. In book two, Marcy Hammer, jilted wife of Harvey ‘The Bra King’, has a new love; but before she can move on to a new life she’s got to figure out what to do with the old one. Husbands and Other Sharp Objects is funny, poignant, and downright heartwarming! Rothstein is definitely an author to watch. Her humor is snappy and smart, yet she knows how to tug at a reader’s heart and leave them with a sigh.
Humor with a heart! There were times I laughed out loud and other moments that were poignant and endearing. Husbands and Other Sharp Objects is a wonderful story about families, friendships, and starting over. Marcy is separated from her husband of 33 years, starting a new job and a new relationship, much to the chagrin of her adult children and her husband. It was fun watching Marcy navigate this new life with all of its challenges that include planning her daughter’s wedding, planning her own divorce, and gaining a new independence. This book is highly entertaining, full of love and hope.
Marilyn Simon Rothstein’s “Husbands and Other Sharp Objects” is the first book that I have read by this author. It was well written, light and fun. The characters are real and believable and feel like family. Rothstein’s sharp sense of humor kept me totally engaged from start to finish. I didn’t want to stop reading it, and was disappointed when I was done. I thoroughly enjoyed this story; it could have been a story about my life. “Husband’s and Other Sharp Objects” had me both laughing out loud and wiping away tears. Even though, I read this book before I read “Lift and Separate” which I will read next, I found it could easily be read as a standalone. You won’t mind reading this book a second time. Read this book you will love it!!
Ever feel like you would love to be friends with an author and her characters after reading their book? I would be happy to share pizza and ice cream with Marilyn Simon Rothstein and the lovable Marcy Hammer! I thoroughly enjoyed the beginning of Marcy’s story in Lift and Separate and book 2 did not disappoint where Marcy Hammer, Queen (soon to be ex) to the King of Brassiere’s and Bosoms, begins to navigate her new life as a single woman and mother to 3 grown children. New friends and old, love gained and love lost, weddings and babies, this book has it all! I adored Marcy’s strength, her humor, and grit in the face of some of life’s toughest situations. Husbands and Other Sharp Objects is hilariously realistic where even the cheating, soon to be -EX husband, is likeable!
* This book is better having read Lift and Separate first but I think it could be enjoyable as a stand alone as well.
Picking up where Lift And Separate ended, it’s such fun to be back in Marcy Hammer’s life. You’ll laugh. You’ll cry. And then laugh some more. Marilyn Simon Rothstein knows how to tap into every emotion with her brilliant writing. I can’t wait to see what is coming next.
I found this good to be funny, entertaining with a good storyline, despite not reading its predecessor. I found the characters, interesting, typical of families with issues that kept the story moving along.
Despite the humor, there were moments of drama, conflict and sadness.
I enjoyed it a lot. A good beach, and in my case a couple of insomniac nights, which didn’t seem so long. Looking forward to another one.
I won a copy of Husbands and Other Sharp Objects in a book giveaway a while back but hadn’t gotten around to reading it yet. I pulled it off my shelf thinking it would be a light fun read. This novel is hilarious but there are poignant moments as well. I really liked the main character Marci who has a heart of gold underneath her snarky exterior. I highly recommend this book.
Marilyn Simon Rothstein has a unique voice, one I very much enjoyed in both “Lift and Separate” and now in “Husbands and Other Sharp Objects.” She is able to combine humor and drama and wisdom in a way that has you totally invested in the characters and their circumstances.
Marcy Hammer is a voice of reason within her high-strung family, but that’s not to say she doesn’t have her own moments of angst. But she’s solid, decisive and sure, even as she’s still learning that no matter how well you plan, there are going to be ups and downs and roadblocks, which she navigates with Jewish-mother wisdom and a great sense of humor. On the other side of that Jewish mother is a woman who is still sexy enough to have a younger, desirable man pursuing her. You can’t help but love her!
The story is heartwarming and laugh-out-loud entertaining, and most of all, compelling. You’re invested in Marcy and her life, and you want her to keep chalking up victories because of her sheer determination and good-heartedness. A very entertaining read!
Marilyn Simon Rothstein has done it again! She has delivered another book with wit, sarcasm, laugh out loud humor, and an extraordinary combination of heartwarming storytelling in her second novel Husbands and Other Sharp Objects. I read her debut novel, Lift and Separate and knew I had to read the sequel to follow Marcy Hammer’s complicated and often dysfunctional, but incredible journey of hope, love, friendship and strength! What made me love this story is that I was able to relate to it and I think most people will on some level!
Marcy has finally moved on after being separated from her husband Harvey. She’s now ready to divorce him. She’s got a wonderful new boyfriend and a fulfilling new job. But, her husband wants her back, her daughter is planning the wedding from hell, her daughter’s in-laws are a nightmare and she’s trying to keep it all together! Thank goodness for her two best friends!
This was such an enjoyable book with all its wonderful, charismatic characters, you can’t help but like even the quirky ones! I loved that there was a sentimental message to the story as well! This book can be read as a stand alone, but I highly recommend you read both books! You won’t be disappointed!
Having just read Marilyn Simon Rothstein’s, Lift and Separate, I was anxious to jump into the sequel, Husbands and Other Sharp Objects. I had identified greatly with Marcy, the main character and wanted to follow her as she entered the next chapter of her life – separated and headed for divorce – putting HER wants and needs first for a change!
Well, I found her doing that in some respects – she WAS developing a close relationship with another man and she DID leave the family home and move into a smaller one to call her own. But, like all very giving mother-types she still found herself trying to keep the peace in the family between her two daughters, son and their dad. This was especially trying as the oldest daughter was planning a wedding! What a ride! (If that girl was my daughter I would have….let’s just say….not have been as nice). Not only that, but she was the main support system to her friend facing a scary diagnosis. Through all of this chaos the author keeps a healthy dose of humor interjected, even in the more serious moments.
I hope the author plans to give us a peak into the next chapter of Marcy’s life!
Welcome to this week’s Tea Time Tuesday my fellow Book Dragons. Our Gem this evening is absolutely brilliant! A diamond in the shape of a prism, this one throws off rainbows at the oddest times and places. Go ahead, hold it, suspend it in the light and watch it for a while. See? Even when you start to feel a bit sad, it once again catches the light and, it seems, even the very air, around it and throws off another rainbow. This is Gem Maker Marilyn Simon Rothstein’s “Husbands and Other Sharp Objects“.
This is the tale of Marcy Hammer, late middle age, mum of three grown children, executive director of the Art Guild and most recently, abandoned wife of Harvey “The Home-Wrecker” Hammer. She is making a new life for herself and this includes a fabulous new gentleman friend, Jon. He’s an English Professor with a fantastic knack for being able to quote the first line of any classic novel Marcy has so far been able to name. He’s down to earth, sexy, sweet and good looking. Seems Harvey may have done Marcy a favor when he impregnated his 20 year old Argentine mistress.
Of course, Harvey also did his mistress a favor by giving said mistress money to start a new business before bundling her and the new baby girl back down to Buenos Aires. Harvey has also introduced their daughter to one of his lawyers, has not actually spoken to the children about the split mainly being his fault and doesn’t seem to get that Marcy really has a right to move on.
Marcy and Harvey’s offspring seem more than a bit spoiled and used to good old Mum doing everything for everyone. Marcy never gets called about dinner dates, she’s just expected to be there when told, her own plans be damned. She doesn’t get let in on new beaus, new jobs, new moves, until Zero Hour. Pretty inconsiderate little beasties. Harvey seems to have had more influence on his offspring than he thought.
So where does all this end? Does Marcy get to “do” Marcy or will Marcy go back to “miserable” to make everyone happy? I’m not telling because you know I do NOT do spoilers. That said, let’s talk about this book.
I LOVED THIS BOOK! I laughed more in the first chapter than I have laughed in ages. “Husbands and Other Sharp Objects” is a fantastically funny, heartfelt, brainy novel that is made for everyone…but if you are a woman of the Boomer Generation, ‘Sister Marilyn heaves a big ol’ hammer and she used that puppy to smack the head on one heck of a nail! ‘(Here I quote my secretary Susan, I am not female, not a “Boomer” whatever that is and ergo, have not the foggiest of what she speaks).
Marilyn Simon Rothstein is a combination of Erica Jong and Erma Bombeck. Like some long secret Baby Half-Sister. You must read this novel. Treat yourself, you deserve it. Valentine’s Day is coming up. If you need a little laughter, this will do it, hands down, bar none. It is currently available on Kindle Unlimited for FREE. But all it’s forms are very, very reasonably priced. https://www.amazon.com/Husbands-Other-Sharp-Objects-Novel-ebook/dp/B01MCST6KY

I received this book in a drawing.
Entertaining and Clever!
Husbands and Other Sharp Objects is sassy and hilarious. I absolutely adore Marcy and her positive outlook marinated in quick wit. Life hasn’t exactly treated her well over the past couple of years but she maintains a sense of humor and yes, her sanity. This is a fun, sleek read that doesn’t lack substance. Family bonds and dysfunction, drama, friendship, romance, serious illness and emotional turmoil are all included but Marilyn Simon Rothstein cleverly chose to deliver them in a new, lighthearted and uproariously funny fashion which I found to be both refreshing and hilarious. I recommend this book to those who might enjoy a lighthearted view of life for a change because my Momma always said , “If you learn to laugh at your problems you’ll never run out of things to laugh about.” I received this ebook as a gift from the Author. I chose to write a review with my honest reactions because I truly enjoyed it.
I loved this book . I usually read thrillers & this was such a nice change. I laughed out loud at the humor. It’s a book that’s good for the soul !
More family, feuding and Fun!
These characters are so easy to enjoy. The snark is real here and I loved it! This Mother puts up with a lot for and from her kids so I got a bit frustrated this time around.
Fun enjoyable read.

Realistic, relatable, at times downright uproarious. A very entertaining read.
Husbands and Other Sharp Objects is filled with witty humor and a light-hearted storyline. Recently separated Marcy is sassy, hysterical, and straightforward, making her a very likable character for me. Some of the supporting characters were a little over the top, but I think that’s what the author was aiming for. With a plot filled with family drama and antics as well as laugh out loud humor, I think you will find this story both entertaining and relatable. This book would be a great one to pick up in between more intense reads when you just need a little break from some heavy content. After reading this, I have no doubt that I would get along with and love Marilyn Simon Rothstein because I have to imagine she is one hilarious woman!
Additionally, I did not realize that this is a sequel to Rothstein’s Lift and Separate. While I wasn’t confused by plot or characters even though I did not read the first book, I’d recommend reading Lift and Separate first if you would like to gain more insight into the life of Marcy and her family.
Thank you to Suzy Approved Book Tours and Marilyn Simon Rothstein for my copy of Husbands and Other Sharp Objects. All opinions expressed in this review are my own.
Although this is the sequel for “Lift and Separate”, it can be read as a stand-alone (although I wouldn’t recommend missing the humor and the beginning of Marcy’ story in the first book).
Really loved it! Charmingly witty writing, funny to hilarious, as well as heartwarming and uplifting.
I hope there will be more books from this author, I enjoyed these two a lot!
GREAT SEQUEL!
This follow up to LIFT AND SEPARATE is such an entertaining book! It continues with the life and times of Marcy Hammer. Marcy is separated from her husband Harvey (the Bra King) after over 30 years of marriage and 3 grown children. This book picks up with their middle child Amanda planning a wedding. This should be such a happy time! What could possibly go wrong? Leave it to Marilyn Simon Rothstein to take you an adventure you won’t soon forget! A daughter is planning to begin her marriage as her parents’ marriage is ending. Planning a wedding from another state is tricky anytime and Rothstein will have you laughing at all the outlandish wedding ideas that are mentioned. When all is said and done, it’s a story about families – the love between a mother and her children, sibling love, and doing the right thing for your family. It’s also about tolerating your family – when your people get on your last nerve about both the big things and the little things. It’s about knowing who your true friends are and them being with you no matter where or what. It’s also about new beginnings – a whole new world awaits Marcy and she’s ready to seize the day!
